UP IN THE CLOUDS
CON LA TESTA FRA LE NUVOLE
How can we not talk about the sea in our summer edition? For
the first time, we’ll leave our shores to “dive” into the waters
in search of the extraordinary Tuscan archipelago. Let’s start
from the island of Elba, not visiting it just like tourists to see its natural
and historical beauties but just gastronomically. Marco Gemelli tells us
of dishes from the traditional Elban cuisine but also from the contemporary
one with recipes by local chefs and the herbs that grow there
following, as a kind of reference book, the recent publication by Valter
Giuliani “Elba Taste”. The traditional touristy part will make you discover
Tuscany from above, flying amongst the clouds in extraordinary
and colourful hot air balloons recalling “Around the world in 80 days”
guided by Maria Chiara Cremoni, first Tuscan woman pilot with an official
license. Once back on land, you will find the original initiative of
“land art” at Colle di Bordocheo on the hills of Lucca thus the charm of
Borgo Pignano, a “gourmand” resort where TVs do not exist, right up
to the discovery of the Maremma in an enoic-cultural-musical programme
at Val delle Rose of the Cecchi family. But our region also means
craftwork with some “handmade” marvels. And it is also the land where,
in the 1950s, the first Italian jeans factory was born. The clever Silvia
Gigli, famous fashion designer, tells us the story of Roy Roger’s and their
“made-to-measure”. In this number, the review dedicated to local photographers
or those who portray Tuscany, continues. Interviewing Andrea
Moretti we have Francesca Soldani while the subjects of his black and
white pictures are the people who work in the dining rooms of restaurants.
Our regular features continue too, such as “The Way We Were”
with Sylvester Stallone in Florence and “Shot on Site” of Porsche cars
at Forte dei Marmi and the organic Tuscan vodka VKA at the Odeon
dello straordinario arcipelago toscano.
“fatto a mano”.
toscana VKA all’Odeon Bistrò.
TUSCAN PASSION
PASSIONE TOSCANA
Amid nature and colours. The beauties of Tuscany in summer
move to the coast, firmly convinced about giving unique
holidays and intensely enchanting scenery. That which
strikes mostly is the ability of our region to renew itself every year,
uniquely, in a way that is difficult to reproduce in any other part of
the world. It is difficult to find another coast like this one, hinged
between the sea and the mountains, between blue skies and beaches
stretching out for kilometres. The difficulty of having to say
something exclusive at every change of season suddenly becomes
easy. Enchantment and evocations blend, each time giving a different
and fascinating perspective from every corner of the region.
From the inland greenery of the hills to the landscapes overlooking
Versilia; from the sunsets over the Chianti to the allure of art which
never sets, in spite of seasonal changes. An exhilarating atmosphere
which we hope to have adequately proposed in this issue, aiming at
transforming Toscana & Chianti in a true and matchless implement
uniting Tuscany with all those who, travelling around the world,
hold a real and true passion for it.
sempre nuovo, unico, difficilmente replicabile in qualsiasi altra parte
semplice. Incanto e suggestioni si fondono regalando, in ogni angolo
della regione, uno scorcio diverso ed affascinante. Dal verde
entroterra delle colline ai panorami che si affacciano sulla Versilia;
When admiring the beauty of its coasts, the curved
play of the beaches and creeks from Capoliveri to
Portoferraio, fully breathing in the brackish air
full of iodine at Porto Azzurro or Rio Marina, it may come
all too easy to imagine Isola D’Elba has a solid tradition
of “marinara” seafood cuisine. But no, because contrarily
iodio e salmastro a Porto Azzurro o Rio Marina, potrebbe
venire fin troppo facile immaginare che l’isola d’Elba abbia
una consolidata tradizione di cucina marinara. E invece no,
crystal clear waters from Marciana Marina to Porto Azzurro but only
for themselves and to make simple dishes, done mainly to accompany
the wine. The quality of the cuisine, instead, became steadily refined
during the decades by immigration, that is when whole fishermen’s families
moved to Elba from Ponza, Capri, Ischia and so on, exploiting
the scarce competition. Before then, its cuisine was mainly meat seeing
that, until the 19th century, the widespread occupation on the island
was mining. In those years, workers needed highly nutritious meals and
tables were full of dried fruit and nourishing raw materials. Things
changed with time and a new generation of chefs have brought about a
change of pace in the island’s restaurants. A small “army” of professionals
– from Marco Olmetti (Peppenero) to Massimo Poli (Montefabbrelnelle
diffusa sull’isola fino all’Ottocento era quella estrattiva e mineraria. In
frutta secca e materie prime nutrienti.
(Le Magie) – was first sent out to eight Florentine restaurants
and consequently it doubled the venture in as many
locations on the Tuscan inland, thanks to the partnership
between the Elbataste consortium and Vetrina Toscana.
Now their recipes have been gathered in a book – Elba Taste
(ed. Florence Press), edited by Valter Giuliani – as well
as index cards of the officinal and aromatic plants that grow
on the island representing a biodiversity of which there’s
hardly anything similar. In its pages there is the traditional
cuisine, from boiled octopus to alla riese stockfish, from the
schiaccia briaca to the gurguglione of Rio up to stuffed cuttlefish,
cacciucco (a modification of that made in Livorno
and Versilia), fried zerri (bluefish species) or stuffed sardines.
But the cuisine of Isola d’Elba is not only a mirror of
tradition: indeed, next to the typical dishes a contemporary,
more innovative, cuisine has developed, fruit of the tourist
activity of these last decades. Along with it come the wines:
even if the area with vineyards has been reduced up to 200
hectares, pearls like Ansonica, Aleatico or Moscato live on.
da Marco Olmetti (Pepenero) a Massimo Poli (Montefabbrello),
da Luigi Muti (Vento in poppa) a Umberto Giacomelli
(Osteria Gallo Nero), da Giacomo Paoli (Il polpaio) a Fabio
Molinari (Tamata), fino a Gianni Monreale, Simona Giovannetti,
Christophe Herzog (Calanova), Danilo Ferrara (Capo
(La Perla del Golfo), Amos Rota (Villa Ripalte), Gabriele
Messina, (Elba Magna) e Paola Francesca Bertani (Le Magie)
Elbataste e Vetrina Toscana. Adesso le loro ricette sono
state racchiuse in un libro – Elba Taste (ed. Florence Press),
Each one of us has a secret dream guarded with great
fervor. And then, suddenly, that moment comes
when we are ready to open our heart and start writing
the pages of our deepest passions. This happened to Maria
Chiara Cremoni, born and bred in Capannori who has left
her mark in the world of aerostatics in Tuscany.
“It was my father, who has been a hang-glider for a long
time, who passed me his passion for air. I always dreamed
of flying as a child, I was a dreamer. I used to imagine letting
myself be lulled by the clouds dreaming of landscapes
to discover”.
The hot air balloon was love at first sight, the very one which
suddenly hits you and finds fertile land on which to bloom.
“It was 2007 when, with the Municipality of Capannori, we
organized a project of territorial and solidarity promotion
“Capannori fa Valora Alta la Solidarietà” and the “Festa
dell’Aria” festival at the airport. From that moment on, it
was love at first sight with hot air balloons”
In life, the winners are those who make dedication, determi-
- 16 -
E poi, quasi all’improvviso, arriva quell’attimo
dell’Aria” all’aereoporto. Da quel momento è stato amore a
nation and perseverance prevail: and Maria Chiara
Cremoni is an example.
After having attended the “Charbonnier Mongolfiere”
school of Aosta, a French airline company and
certified school, the most prestigious in Italy, she
got her pilot’s license becoming the first Tuscan woman
pilot in the history of Italian aerostatics and
one of the first in Italy to obtain the license.
“The first time I flew on my own was over the
snowy peaks of the mountains in Val d’Aosta. It was
winter, bitterly cold. But I cannot describe my feelings”,
says Maria Chiara with eyes shining like diamonds.
“First love is never forgotten but Tuscany
has no equal. Each geographic area has something
to tell: roes hiding amongst the trees, the nearly surreal
silence when going through the clouds in hilly
landscapes, the grazing flight on Lago della Gherardesca
at Capannori, at the foot of Monte Pisano,
the villas and country parish churches of Capannori
from above, the lush vineyards and olive groves,
these are emotions which are rarely felt”.
Travelling in a hot air balloon is a
kind of slow tourism and Tuscany,
thanks to her, is becoming aware of
it considerably.
“A flight lasts about an hour for tourists.
You can fly over the historic centre
of Lucca which is poetry for the
eyes, enjoy dawn in the WWF Oasis
of Bottaccio with its nearly uncontaminated
nature, or carry on towards
the Chianti Classico area wafting
like a soapy bubble hanging in time”.
Discovering Tuscany from above in a
hot air balloon for two or twenty people
is one of those once-in-a-lifetime
experiences. The hot air balloon is
the best means to caress it sweetly.
“We are the wind, we fly with the
wind”. Maria Chiara Cremoni concludes
with shining eyes as though
she was feeling all these sensations
for the first time.
occhi, gustarsi l’alba nell’Oasi WWF
del Bottaccio con la sua natura quasi
incontaminata, oppure proseguire
nel Chianti Classico aleggiando come
una bolla di sapone sospesa nel tempo”.
Scoprire la Toscana dall’alto in mongolfiera
per due o venti persone, è una
di quelle esperienze da vivere almeno
una volta nella vita. E la mongolfiera
è il mezzo migliore per accarezzarla
con dolcezza. “Noi siamo il vento, noi
voliamo con il vento” conclude Maria
Chiara Cremoni con gli occhi che
continuano a brillare, come se tutte
queste sensazioni le stesse provando
per la prima volta.
participants, all men but with lots of women followers, met at the boutique which Cassetti dedicated to IWC on Ponte Vecchio, to take part
in the “IWC-TRIUMPH Ride Experience”.
Waiting for them were
fourteen Triumph motor bikes with
which they left for the sweet curves
of the scenic roads of Chianti
passing through Greve in Chianti
to reach Le Filigare in the late afternoon,
a luxurious agritourismo
owned by the Cassetti Family at San
Donato in Poggio. In the evening
everybody went to Panzano for a tasty
dinner at the famous restaurant
Antica Macelleria Dario Cecchini.
Instead, Sunday morning was
dedicated to the discovery of IWC
watches or rather the experience
of taking them apart and putting
them together again in front of
expert watchmakers of the famous
Swiss leading company. The group
returned to Florence always on
their bikes for new Chiantigiani itineraries.
ROY ROGER’S JEANS, TAILOURED AND CUSTOMISED / JEANS ROY ROGER’S, SU MISURA E PERSONALIZZATI
Jeans which are unique in the world. Each detail, even
the most hidden, is tailour-made for those who will wear
them. Only Roy Roger’s, a leading Florentine denim
company, was able to make this dream come true. “Ours
are totally customized jeans”, Niccolò Biondi explains, managing
director of Sevenbell, the brand’s mother company.
“We offer our customers 21 kinds of denim from which to
choose, starting from the texture of the material to its washing.
Then there’s the colour of the seams, red, blue, yellow,
green and the possibility of choosing rivets in silver,
old silver, copper, brass or lacquered in various colours”.
The process for customized jeans also passes through the
choice of the lining and the “salpe” which are nothing more
than rear leather logos sewn on the back of the trousers.
These can be crocodile leather, leather tanned in various
o smaltati in vari colori”.
ways or rich fabrics such as kimono
or Persian carpets. Choose from 30
different kinds. “Even our small Roy
Roger’s triangle on the back pocket
can be customized deciding on size
and colour and numbers and initials
can be embroidered internally
or externally”. It is no easy job. You
need a tailour who can take every
customer’s measurements and three
pattern makers readily available. The
jeans are entirely made on the company’s
premises and are ready in 4/5
weeks. A couple of years ago, the idea
of personalized jeans came to Guido,
Niccolò’s brother and the creative
director of the company from Campi
Bisenzio while Patrizia Biondi, the
mother, is the President. Since then,
the success of the initiative, especially
abroad, has been astounding.
“We have been to Germany, Holland,
Spain and Japan to present our
made-to-measure garment”, Niccolò
continues, “ soon we’ll go to France
and we are regularly present in our
single brand shops”. Each pair can
tipi.
possono ricamare cifre e nomi all’interno
o all’esterno del jeans”. Non è
un lavoro semplice. Servono un sarto
che prenda le misure per ciascun
cliente e tre modellisti a disposizione.
I capi vengono realizzati interamente
in azienda e sono pronti in
4/5 settimane. L’idea del jeans personalizzato
è venuta un paio di anni
fa a Guido, fratello di Niccolò e direttore
creativo dell’azienda campigiana
mentre la madre Patrizia Biondi ne
è la presidente. Da allora il successo
dell’iniziativa, soprattutto all’estero,
è stato clamoroso. “Siamo stati in
Germania, in Olanda, in Spagna e in
Giappone a presentare il nostro fatto
su misura - continua Niccolò - presto
saremo in Francia e a cadenze precise
siamo nei nostri punti vendita
monomarca”. Ogni capo può costare
A dream which can come true at the
in 1949 at Campi Bisenzio, amongst
the debris of post-war Italy, “Manifatture
is a leading company in its sector. It
was 1952 when Francesco Bacci, the
Roy Roger’s 227 on the market, the
first Italian jeans in original denim.
Vita in piazza della
Signoria
We are now at the 16th edition of “Corri la Vita”, a
project born in 2003 aimed at increasing the health
services in the Florentine area, in the fight against
breast cancer and medical aid to cancer patients. This event
has already enjoyed enormous success in the early editions
with a growing number of adhesions now reaching 35,000
runners. All the earnings from the “Corri la vita onlus” association,
thanks to voluntary workers, are devolved to boost
healthcare.
The event includes a marathon divided into two itineraries,
one of about 5.5 and the other of 11 kilometres: a unique
occasion to have fun while contributing towards a final objective
at the same time. For the occasion we have interviewed
the marquise Bona Frescobaldi, president of the “Corri la
Vita Onlus” Association which has brought about a huge contribution
to the development of a sport and cultural project
with a social end.
How was the idea of organizing “Corri la Vita” born?
We started many years ago. We wanted to promote something
that could make us raise funds to finance a cancer rehabilitation
centre organized by Lilt in Florence and the local health
authorities. I must truly say we never expected to have such
partecipanti.
unica per divertirsi e allo stesso tempo contribuire all’obbiettivo
finale.
Abbiamo cominciato molti anni fa. Volevamo promuovere
Ormai
an outcome. For over fifteen years now, tens of thousands
of people meet to take part in our race, and
quite frankly, this is a really exceptional fact.
What does “Corri la Vita” mean to you?
For me, “Corri la Vita” is the concrete possibility
to help those who suffer, women who fight against
breast cancer. I told you about the very many friends
who spend a day with us on the last Sunday in September
but the closeness and affection are felt every
day: during the next year we can count on many appointments,
perhaps less sensational, which warm
our hearts and endorse how “Corri la Vita” is now
the heritage of all the city.
On 30th September this year, there will be a new
edition of the charity race, what are the objectives
in numbers?
We do not need to fix such well-defined goals. As for
the past editions, we only want lots of people to wear
our T-shirt, spend a day of sharing and happiness.
We are happy when apart from giving a helping
hand towards a good cause we can also raise awareness
of a problem and take it upon ourselves to do
what is in our possibilities.
Even this year we start from piazzale Vittorio Veneto
to the Cascine which will be a point of refreshment,
encounters and entertainment. I’m sure the Florentines,
but not only, will “largely” take part as they
assicurati ogni giorno: nell’arco dell’anno possiamo
in termini numerici?
definiti. Vogliamo solo che come nelle passate edizioni
in tanti indossino la nostra maglietta, trascorrano
una giornata di condivisione e di gioia. Siamo
view of the next race?
Participate with happiness and awareness in a wonderful
project answering a need we all have: solidarity
and to remember relatives, friends and acquaintances
hit by this disease.
What new ideas are there for the next years so
that the attention upon such an event will not
drop?
There will always be new ideas just as there will
always be new projects for new needs. The beautiful
thing is that ideas and new projects come from
proposals and notifications which are frequently
brought to us by friends and supporters confirming
the fact that “Corri la Vita” is an open and shared
reality. This is why we are happy and will never stop
supporting it, enthusiastically and passionately.
massa” come sempre!
Ci saranno sempre nuove idee come ci saranno nuovi
entusiasmo e passione.
TUSCAN FOOD I Gelateria Santa Trinita
by Carolina Natoli
GELATERIA SANTA TRINITA
ICE CREAM STORE
THE ART OF FLAVOUR MADE IN ITALY
L’ARTE DEL GUSTO MADE IN ITALY
In the heart of Florence, in the historic Palazzo Frescobaldi
just a few steps away from Ponte Santa Trinità,
Gelateria Santa Trinità has been delighting the most
discerning palates for over ten years, every day with real
artisan Made in Italy gelato. Its founder, Paolo Settesoldi,
has transformed this job into a real and true art, treating
each flavor with passion as though it were a work of art also
thanks to the experience gained in his previous ice cream
store in the historic district of San Frediano. Quality and
freshness of raw materials used are at the heart of the philosophy
of Gelateria Santa Trinità, producing over 40 flavours
every day with a continuous turnover in the 30 basins in the
shop window amongst ice creams, sorbets and semifreddos.
Paolo pays extra special care in the choice of the products
he uses to make his famous gelato. An example? Milk and
cream used in the shop are chosen personally on the production
site and extremely fresh products arrive in Floren-
e semifreddi.
- 34 -
ce every day. The same goes for the
cheese: “It is absolutely forbidden to
use powdered ingredients to make,
for example, the Cheesecake flavor,”
Paolo remarks, “fresh ricotta cheese
and Philadelphia are the right ingredients.
The same is for the Mascarpone
flavor or Ricotta, served with
figs.” Star of the the Gelateria Santa
Trinità is Sesamo Nero (Black Sesame),
where the seeds are imported
directly from Japan. Add Cioccolato
d’Austria to this, a three-layered flavor
with dark chocolate, dark chocolate
cream and apricot jam. To round
off, the historic Santa Trinità with
fresh mascarpone cheese and Nutella.
Ice cream cakes and mignon semifreddos
are a ‘must’. In the ice cream
store there is also a shop selling an
excellent selection of typical Tuscan
products, from wine to balsamic vinegar,
from the precious truffles to
wafers from Montecatini.
produzione ed ogni giorno arrivano
a Firenze i prodotti freschissimi. Lo
stesso vale per i formaggi: “É assolutamente
vietato utilizzare alimenti
liofilizzati per realizzare, per esempio,
il gusto Cheesecake – chiosa
Paolo -, ricotta fresca e Philadelphia
sono i giusti ingredienti. Idem per il
gusto Mascarpone o Ricotta, servito
con i fichi”. Fiore all’occhiello della
Gelateria Santa Trinita è il Sesamo
Nero, il cui seme viene importato
direttamente dal Giappone. A questo
si aggiunge il Cioccolato d’Austria,
gusto tre strati composto da cioccolato
fondente, crema al fondente e
marmellata di albicocche. Per finire,
lo storico Santa Trinita, con mascarpone
fresco e Nutella. Sono da provare
‘obbligatoriamente’ le torte gelato
e i semifreddi mignon. All’interno
della gelateria c’è anche un emporio,
dove è possibile trovare in vendita
un’ottima selezione di prodotti tipici
toscani, dal vino all’aceto balsamico,
dai pregiati tartufi alle cialde di Montecatini.
In the heart of Florence there’s a place which has made
genuineness its driving force: Simbiosi Organic is a restaurant/pizzeria
where you can find healthy and organic
dishes without giving up on taste. The various kinds of
flour used are stone ground and strictly organic, as are all the
other ingredients: ancient grains, easy to digest, light, very
hydrated doughs, paired with both traditional and gourmet
recipes. The many collaborations with farms, farmers and
small family-run businesses do not only guarantee the naturalness
of the product but also a direct producer-to-consumer
relationship.
After the huge success with the pizzeria, Simbiosi introduced
a new project: Organic Pasta. Fresh homemade pasta, strictly
made with organic Italian flour and eggs. The common denominator
remains the organic element and the seasonality
of the raw materials to which a special à la carte is matched
dedicated to a selection of organic and biodynamic wines.
We met the owner, Donato Crivelli, who told us some peculiarities
and features of his Simbiosi.
- 36 -
ristorante/pizzeria dove è possibile trovare piatti sani
e biologici senza rinunciare al gusto. Le farine utilizzate sono
macinate a pietra e rigorosamente bio, così come tutti gli ingredienti:
grani antichi, facilmente digeribili, impasti leggeri,
How long has the eatery been open and how is
it run?
“There are two separate eateries, a pizzeria and a
restaurant, side by side, we opened the pizzeria three
years ago, the restaurant a year and a half later. I
try to keep the all aspects of organic agriculture and
products from small producers for both”.
What’s the philosophy behind the pizzeria and
the restaurant?
“The philosophy is philo-biological and tied to products
of this territory and the small enterprises. For
example, the meat is not organic but it co mes from
a trusted butcher in the Chianti, from whom we get
mostly cured meats which he makes at the back of
his shop just as they used to in the past. Even if it
is certified organic, we avoid getting meat from the
large scale distribution chains. We take great care in
all that is quality and the origin of the production,
strictly local”.
What are the specialities?
“For the pizza we use semi-wholemeal flour coming
from small producers, trying to create a union
between “eating healthy” and “eating tasty”. In the
restaurant our speciality is doubtlessly the pasta,
branded Simbiosi Organic Pasta made with organic
flour with wheat germ. Amongst the various specialities
surely the most sought-after are the pappardelle
al cinghiale (wild boar pappardelle) in honour of tradition
and a typical Tuscan taste”.
Surrounded by the typical Tuscan countryside, with hectares
the “Foresteria Villa Cerna” restaurant. Here the best ingredients,
is made and left to mature: a visit is a must to discover the
secrets of the world of wine from the origins to its distribution.
Take in the fresh and fragrant air of the cellars scented
Terrazza con vista
Hotel Athena is found in Siena, city of the Palio; a
4-star facility rising within the ancient medieval
walls. Guests have the privilege of staying in a calm
location a few steps away from the famous Piazza del Campo,
the Duomo and the Santa Maria della Scala museum
complex but all the centre is easily reached on foot. Hotel
Athena’s position is enviable indeed especially in summer,
during the Palio days when the reveling city is full of colour:
symbols of rivalry and land partitions sprout up everywhere
amongst flags, lights, supporters wearing their Contrada’s
scarf singing its hymns as well as the two much-awaited-for
daily trials to test jockeys and horses on the tufo sand of
Piazza del Campo.
Not being a normal race but a strong tradition firmly tied to
the territory, guests can make the most of the personnel at
the reception who are well-prepared and able to enlighten
them with important information regarding events, oddities
and give useful advice for their stay during the days of the
Palio and they also have the opportunity to buy tickets to see
the race from privileged seats.
Moreover, the many accommodation options are tailored
A
medievali.
a piedi.
to satisfy any needs guests may have, even regarding
their budgets: indeed, the hotel boasts 100
rooms, divided into different categories from simple
‘economy’ for short city breaks to standard and
finally reaching deluxe and executive, much appreciated
for their breathtaking views. Then, there
are the large family rooms with the possibility of
joining them for large families. All the rooms have
free drinking water, a kettle for tea and coffee, a
safe, air conditioning, slippers and a first class welcome
At the end of a typical summer’s day, full of emotions
and excitements, the return to Hotel Athena
will be elated by the sunset from the stunning terrace
typically Tuscan menus and wines, pampered by
the staff of the hotel’s restaurant, “Mangia”.
That which starts on 21st June is the most-awaited for
and loved season to enjoy the sun and fresh air late
into the evening with a show of candles accompanied
by the singing of birds and cicadas. Even Tuscany enjoys
calm and warm days in summer, full of fragrances and intense
flavours coming from fields of corn, barley, sunflowers
and wheat fringed with wild flowers such as daisies, nigella,
St. John’s wort and solidago. Even the gardens are suddenly
overwhelmed with lush plants and hydrangeas, roses, solanum
and agapanthus, amazing to see; other varieties are added
to all this, having countless properties such as jasmine,
geraniums and lavender with their intoxicating perfumes,
all excellent mosquito repellents. All this splendor, framed
by the richness coming from art and history has always seen
Tuscany as being the ideal destination for a holiday dedicated
to good taste and beauty, apart from being chosen as a
wedding location. With its ideal microclimate, this region is
the perfect cradle for plants and flowers which bloom spectacularly:
In estate
margherite, nighella, hiperico e solidago.
ottimi antizanzare.
have so many beneficial properties for health and beauty. Even nowadays the tradition of
extracting essential oils from these plants for their benefits is very much alive. Amongst
them all, the one that is mainly used is lavender: its flowers are gathered by the workers
at the end of July to be then distilled and to obtain the essential oil considered to be a
Last year, the San Gimignano Designation Consortium
opened Rocca di Montestaffoli, the new centre dedicated
to Vernaccia, in the heart of San Gimignano,
the reign of this wine, symbol of the area.
“Vernaccia di San Gimignano Wine Experience. La Rocca”
clearly states what it represents: the place for a wine experience
which does not only concern tasting but also learning
all about wine and the emotional impact it triggers. It represents
an experiment that is unique and original of its sort in
Tuscany: indeed, it is the first centre of this kind managed
directly by the producers using multimedia and technologically
advanced facilities discovering everything about wine
using all the senses.
“What we have tried to do with this project is to change the
traditional exposition space of a wine museum into a dreamlike
place where you can learn by fully surrounding yourself
visually and physically in the vineyards and cellars of our
Vernaccia di San Gimigano producers,” Letizia Cesani, president
of the Consortium explains.
The premises have been thought of and created with the
most modern technologies offering visitors a multisensory
immergendosi visivamente e fisicamente nelle vigne e nelle
experience and to enhance a world-wide promotion
of the wine produced by the Consortium.
In a short time, the many tourists who visit are
given the opportunity to learn about “Bacchus’s
nectare”, its history, culture and territory; all this
through pictures, lights, sounds, hologrammes and
headsets for virtual reality and also through the
words of expert sommeliers who will guide them in
professional tastings every day. This way, La Rocca
can become an incentive for visitors who do not
just limit themselves to mere tastings but further
their knowledge of the area and the real life of the
men and women who live, work and produce here.
Vernaccia di San Gimignano is not only an integral
part of the city, it has become its symbol and has
given a solid bond to the indissoluble ties that join
the city to the countryside, to the evaluation of this
land through quality designations.
in degustazioni professionali.
The last lap of our journey along the Regional Road
along the Chianti hills from Siena to finally reach
Florence. Right in the centre of the town, in Piazza Landi,
the historic artisan pasta manufacturing plant, Fabbri,
is worthy of note. The premises also host a small
museum dedicated to the history of the traditional production.
Hitting the road once more, at “La Martellina”, we find
the junction for Impruneta. In less than five minutes we
reach Piazza Buondelmonti, vibrant town centre which
holds the beautiful Basilica of Santa Maria all’Impruneta.
On the last Sunday in September, the same piazza
comes to life on the occasion of the “Festa dell’Uva” (the
a Firenze.
Riprendendo la strada, all’altezza de “La Martellina”, troviamo
tion of “Giardino di Zago” (Zago’s Garden) next to the headquarters of the company
with the same name. One curve after another leads us to Ugolino. Going across the
golf course which has been the main reference point for Florentine golf enthusiasts
and not only for over 80 years, the road starts descending towards the city.
Before reaching the town of Grassina, we pass near the Tabernacle of Our Lady of
Bon Voyage painted by Pietro Annigoni at the corner of the street which leads to the
ancient church of San Martino a Strada. Along the Ripoli part of the Chiantigiana,
another small detour should be taken at Ponte a Ema. From here, in a few minutes,
it is possible to reach the 14th century Oratory of Santa Caterina delle Ruote.
Just a few kilometres more and here we are in the Municipality of Florence, in Piazza
Badia a Ripoli. The Chiantigiana ends here and so does our journey along this
amazing stretch of Tuscany.
dell’omonima azienda. Curva dopo curva si arriva all’Ugolino. Sfrecciando attraverso
porta all’antica chiesa di San Martino a Strada.
a Ripoli.
TUSCANY & ART I San Leolino a Panzano
by Maria Maddalena Grossi
PIEVE DI SAN LEOLINO
AMONG ARTISTIC RICHNESS AND A FASCINATING
LANDSCAPE
TRA LA RICCHEZZA ARTISTICA E IL FASCINO DEL
PAESAGGIO
There have been records of the ancient country parish church of
San Leolino in Panzano in Chianti right since the 10th century
in a document of Badia a Passignano (Tavarnelle Val di Pesa) and
its architectural structure holds both traces of the Romanesque period
(12th century) and the ensuing refurbishments of the 15th century. These
latter can be seen in the entrance portico made up of a series of five
arches leading towards the interior, itself divided into three large naves
with arches supported by four-sided columns. The artistic heritage kept
in the Pieve is of remarkable interest amongst which is a first century
dossal said to be by Meliore di Jacopo with Our Lady enthroned between
the saints Peter and Paul and episodes from their lives, the major altar
has a triptych said to be by Mariotto di Nardo with Our Lady and Child
between St. Francis, St. John the Baptist, St. Lawrence and St. Eufrosino,
where a scene of each saint’s life is portrayed upon its altar step
corresponding to the saint. Other two paintings decorate the church,
respectively a 15th-century Madonna and Child in the left aisle and a
triptych of the end of the 15th century in the right-hand aisle with a
Madonna and Child in the midst of St. Catherine, St. Peter and St. Paul.
The charm of the pieve is partly given by its position overlooking the socalled
“Golden Basin of Chianti” for the shape of the hills which enclose
a large and deep valley..
San Pietro e San Paolo.
This is truly an event where winning is not as important
as taking part. First of all, rather than a competition it
is great fun but the true victory in the “Crazyrun” race
- this is what we are talking about, here - is managing to sign
and the quota (80) of teams admitted. The selected cars are
usually non-conventional, vintage cars, modern super cars or
special liveries), with teams who try and amaze the public with
particular disguises and in line with the chosen vehicle. Even
Le auto selezionate sono generalmente non convenzionali,
auto d’epoca, supercar moderne oppure le famose “Crazycar”
Navigating the seas and oceans using one’s imagination,
fantasizing being on board a vessel: this is the
strong fascinating inspired by the exhibition “Velieri.
Grandi storie di mare” organized by the Herman Geiger
Cultural Foundation on its premises at piazza Guerrazzi,
32 in Cecina. Starting from 7th July it will be possible to
admire models of real and true nautical myths from the
past: from the Golden Hind to the Victory, from the Santa
Maria to the Endeavour, protagonists, together with their
commanders of extraordinary feats in what were the golden
years of sailing. Starting with the first 15th century ocean
voyages and ending a little more than a century ago with the
epic of the extremely fast clippers, this era deeply changed
the knowledge about the world and the perception of times
and distances, opening up to what was different and exotic,
in a continuous succession of scientific progress and technological
evolution.
Grandi
storie di mare”, organizzata dalla Fondazione Culturale
Hermann Geiger all’interno dei propri spazi espositivi, in
piazza Guerrazzi 32 a Cecina.
The models of ships, scientific instruments and
navigation memorabilia all tell the fascination and
dangers of journeys on unknown routes, of life on
board, the meaning and importance of the discoveries,
trading and battles which have been crucial
for the course of history. The exhibition is divided
into four themes: explorations, wars for supremacy
of the seas; corsairs and pirates; trading with
the Indies. In the first section, for example, we
find Christopher Columbus’s Santa Maria, James
Cook’s HMS Endeavour, Amundsen’s Gjøa with a
collection of ancient navigation instruments such
as compasses, octants, binoculars. In the second,
the choice of the models exposed keeps in mind
the major naval battles fought for the domain of
maritime traffic and the supremacy of the seas:
the battle of Lepanto, the Anglo-Spanish war, the
battle of Trafalgar. The third section illustrates stories
of corsair and pirate ships such as the Golden
Hind, set on plundering enemy sailing ships. Finally,
the fourth and last section exhibits Spanish
galleons, whalers and clippers such as the Flying
Cloud and Cutty Sark accompanied by satins, exotic
woods and spices and products from the orient
and eastern colonies. The exhibition is open every
day from 7th July to 16th September, from 6.00pm
to 11.00pm, free admission.
antichi, come bussole, ottanti, cannocchiali. Nella
nemici.
Barbara Chelini’s project “Residenza d’Artista” at Colle
to Land Art (also called Earth Art or Ecological Art) with
works directly on the natural landscape through which the
artists recover their attachment to nature, working on it,
changing it and leaving a personal mark of their passage.
This project, coordinated by Daniela Gorla, has involved
five more artists: Anna Mainardi, Etta Rossi, Maia Pacifico,
Mario Quadraroli and Uberto Gianoli aimed at recovering
and gathering memoires of ancient local traditions presenting
them to tourists and the locals. “A desire to relive the
landscape with contemporary eyes”, says Barbara. The area
chosen for the installations of this first step was the aviary
and its surroundings. “A magical place”, she continues,
“where we used to come and play as children; with the arrival
of spring it really felt like being in fairyland”. They were
small stone houses used for catching small birds which were
then sold at the market as decoys for hunters. A source of
income for farmers at the end of the 19th century. And this
lucchesi è stato dedicato quest’anno all’arte visiva,
artisti: Anna Mainardi, Etta Rossi, Maia Pacifico, Mario Quadraroli
e Uberto Gianoli puntando a recuperare e raccogliere
ved and created, a place permeated with memories
and a special kind of magic, between a vineyard,
an olive grove and a thick bamboo wood. “It would
be lovely to create a cultural path in the future”,
Barbara concludes “an itinerary to bring a new
and different public to discover the hilly landscape
amongst farms, public areas, historic villas. A
new map to discover the territory”. The inauguration
was also an occasion to discover some of the
company’s products, now fully launched in organic
and sustainable cultivation. Ten are the hectares of
vineyards (out of the total 30 of the whole estate)
with red and white grapes, local and international
and 1,650 are the olive trees of the classic Tuscan
variety, owned by the Chelini family for the last
sixty years. A special protagonist of the day was one
of the five wines - two reds, two whites, a limitededition
dessert wine - produced from the vineyards
of the Colle: Bianco dell’Oca.
ottocento.
“Sarebbe bello in futuro
Nicola Gorreri esegue
When satire becomes art in Pisa it can only be at the
hands of the cartoonist Nicola Gorreri. The “ 50-year-old
youngster”, as he likes to describe himself, is
an artist from Pisa who discovered his love for art as a child
when his father took him along to see his plays in vernacular.
And it is with the vernacular that Gorreri finds the drive for his
artistic inspiration. The illustrated vernacular with what will
become his ironic and elegant style reaches out to exalt never
to exasperate a trait: with this style the artist creates “gracious
cartoons”, ironic and cutting, never vulgar or disrespectful.
The technique used: water colours. Gorreri has illustrated books,
brochures for Teatro Verdi in Pisa, art exhibitions also
personal. He gave a coloured soul to “Park Mushrooms” by
Bandecchi and Vivaldi in 1991; to “Don Mario’s sonnets” of
the vernacular writer Don Mario Stefanini in 2009; and yet
again “Coriandoli” by Dina Paola Cosci in 2011 and to “Ròbba
vecchia e... ròbba nova” (Old stuff and... New stuff) by the
cavaliere Galletti Raspolli in 2012. In 2015 seventeen of his
- 60 -
ironico ed elegante, proteso all’esaltazione giammai all’esasperazione
Montanara”. Pupil of the artist Bruno Pollacci, Nicola
Gorreri perfected the nib pen technique thanks to
the teachings of his artist friend Alberto Fremura. “I
met Fremura when I was little”, says Gorreri, “with
his illustrated book in 1976 which has always been a
bible for me. Destiny then made me meet him again
as an adult at Torre di Calafuria sharing perspectives
and pictures with him”. An extraordinary friendship
started then because Gorreri caught Fremura’s moods
and secrets. It became an art interpenetration
which stimulated the cartoonist from Pisa to ‘target’
priests, politicians and even the Pisa football players.
Nicola Gorreri also met Nano Campeggi. Both found
themselves adjudicators in an art contest. Another
beautiful friendship was born seeing them both tied
to an ‘inspiring muse Helen’. Nicola Gorreri’s however
is a little 12-year-old girl with the same passion
for drawing and who has followed him up to
now becoming his foremost passionate critic. It’s
his daughter, Elena, who joins us with her mother,
Mary. Elena smiles at us, thinking of how much love
her father has handed over to her even through long
artistic silences: necessary moments, because an
artist, isolating himself can put all the alchemy of
a feeling in a work of art, fascinating for many but
puzzling for many others.
a Curtatone e Montanara”. Allievo dell’artista Bruno
Pollacci, Nicola Gorreri ha perfezionato la tecnica
del pennino grazie agli insegnamenti dell’amico
pittore Alberto Fremura. “Ho conosciuto Fremura
umori e confidenze. Si è trattato di una compenetrazione
d’arte che ha stimolato il vignettista
pisano a prendere ‘di mira’ preti, politici e persino
i calciatori del Pisa. Nicola Gorreri conosce anche
Nano Campeggi.
Mary.
isolandosi possa esprimere nell’opera d’arte tutta
TUSCAN CHARME & RELAX I Borgo Pignano
by Marco Gemelli, ph. Marc Bolton
A “GOURMAND” RESORT:
STRICTLY NO TV
UN RESORT “GOLOSO” DOVE LA TV NON ESISTE
An aerial view of
the evocative hotel
Una veduta aerea
del suggestivo
hotel diffuso
Eliminating the TV from the hotel rooms has hardly
been a audacious choice especially when the alternative
- the sweet rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside,
glimpses of an elegant hotel spread out on an Etruscan
settlement, frescoed rooms of an 18th-century villa, silence
calling for mediation, a quality cuisine - is by far superior to
a TV screen. This choice at Borgo Pignano, the 5-star hospitality
structure close to Volterra and San Gimignano is perfectly
in line with the painstaking restoration works carried
out during these last 15 years, and not yet finished, aimed
at refurbishing and not reconstructing. The estate - owned
by the British Sir Michael Moritz since 2000 - spreads out
over 300 hectares of woodland, ponds and small lakes, organic
and biodynamic vegetable gardens. A blend of nature,
comfort and elegance which has given the Borgo its natural
harmony once more and evidence of this lies in the “maisonettes”,
family suites exquisitely furnished with valuable
materials in a rustic Tuscan style. The main building is a majestic
18th-century villa with views overlooking olive groves,
vineyards, woods and English gardens: some of the 14 suites
and rooms have original frescoes and marble and travertine
bathrooms. If you want to enjoy a stay in a medieval building
with arches and columns, vaulted ceilings, terracotta floors
and frescoes then the adjacent 13th-century building is just
right. Moreover, just a few steps away there are zero-impact
cottages and country houses: gas consumption is only that
used for cooking, the rest of the heating is with wood and
- 62 -
restauro conservativo portato avanti negli ultimi 15 anni,
stagni e laghetti, orti biologici e biodinamici.
originali e bagno in marmo e travertino. L’adiacente
volta, pavimenti in terracotta e affreschi. A pochi passi,
solari.
solar panels. Enhancing Borgo Pignano are various experiences
to be had such as yoga and Pilates courses, painting
or cookery courses, horse-riding excursions with picnics, hiking,
mountain-biking and wine-tasting. Then, there is the
Spa, where the bio cosmetics used have been created by a
local herbalist with aromatic and officinal plants. Art is another
reason for visiting; an art gallery hosts local artists and
budding talents. From a culinary point of view, the two restaurants
of Borgo Pignano are Villa Pignano and Al Fresco,
part of a gastronomical project led by the chef Vincenzo Martella:
thanks to the apiary workshop, the pasta factory, the
bakery and the confectionary, excellent grains, pasta, fruit,
vegetables and meat are produced on the estate. Martella is a
convinced advocate of the use of local, in season bio raw materials.
He has a holistic approach including science, art and
nutrition: amongst classicism and tradition, a philosophy
created from respecting a territory, seasonality and research.
e wine-tasting.
It is said that nobody is a prophet in their homeland.
And yet Filippo di Bartola - owner of the restaurant Filippo
MUD and the adjoining cocktail bar in the historic
centre of Pietrasanta - has found, right there in the “little
Athens” of Versilia, someone able to offer a contemporary
cuisine, trendy and refined, going beyond its purely gastronomical
aspect. Where there once was a garage and then an
art gallery, Filippo Di Bartola created both a cocktail bar
entrusted to the young barman and mixologist Thomas Cecere
and a restaurant, which, in these last few months, has
become the domain of the young chef from Pietrasanta Diego
Poli, born 1988. Seating about 50 people in all, the new
wave in the kitchen has been trusted to the hands of a pastry
chef, born in Pietrasanta, loaned to cookery. It is highly
unlikely that this loan will be paid back, consigning Diego
- 64 -
permanently to the ranks of a chef. He was the one
who, in accordance with Filippo’s philosophy and
Tano Pisano’s artist consultancy, came up with the
idea of a menu organized as a sort of “vote of confidence”
working around 5 raw materials and the
chef’s consequent ability to prepare several dishes
with those bases: a mark which is a challenge both
for those in the kitchen and for the customer who
is already well accustomed to surprise effects. On
the other hand, those not so keen on experimenting
can turn to the more reassuring “a la carte”.
Often, the final phase of the serving does not take
place in the kitchen but directly at the table, where
Palagiaccio butter is served in three different flavours:
salt, rosemary, cocoa beans. Amongst Diego
Poli’s creations, there is Lamb Agnolotto. Its filling
is made from all the cuts of lamb cooked for 12
hours with onions and herbs. The meat is then
shredded and the fresh egg pasta is sautéed with
the fond made from the bones. The dish is served
with EVO oil blended with bay berries, pesto
made from almonds from Noto. Diego’s cuisine is
a challenge to his customers’ senses enticing them
to constantly recall flavours, fragrances, shapes,
carta.
tre aromatizzazioni differenti: sale, rosmarino,
unusual combinations and recycled
raw materials. The merit for this formula
- innovative, but not so much as
to go above board - is Filippo’s, who
when travelling around Italy, learnt
the tricks of the trade and picked up
those small secrets which render a
restaurant unique. Having all these
presumptions, notwithstanding that
the historic centre of Pietrasanta
already has over thirty facilities, Filippo
Di Bartola’s eatery even this
year runs to become one of the
“must” places both for the regulars
and the tourists. And in the meantime,
celebrating the 10 years of the
“Brigata di Filippo”, here are the
historic dishes from the other eatery
by Filippo: meat balls, roast beef,
“tordelli” and so on.
costante rimando a sapori, profumi,
geometrie, accostamenti
ristorante. Con queste premesse,
nonostante il centro storico pietrasantino
conti già oltre una trentina
di strutture, il locale di Filippo Di
Bartola si candida anche quest’anno
ad essere uno dei must sia per
gli habitué che per i turisti. E nel
frattempo, per i 10 anni della “Brigata
di Filippo” arrivano i piatti
storici dell’altro locale by Filippo:
Tiziano Lera, widely-known urban architect, is the creator
of the so-called biosystematic architecture aimed
at the recovery of biomasses. For Tiziano Lera, water
- in all its infinite directions, through the course of the land,
in the growth of plants - creates a magic that, following the
path of the sun, represents his professional style, his art.
Lera has demonstrated his equation creating a balanced harmony
between environment and construction through architecture.
Artists such as Botero, Cascella, Ciulla, Barberi,
Tongiani, Mitoraj and others have been able to include their
works in his architecture but in many cases it was the same
Architect himself who thought up settings and creations
of his own devising. In the garden of his house, sculptures
sprout up seeming part of the landscape.
- 68 -
How are you able to join art and nature?
“It is normal for me! I’ve always seen the beauty
of Italy, especially Tuscany, as a reality where art,
especially sculpture, blends perfectly with the landscape.
I’m friends with important artists who have
given me their works in these years. I, myself, am a
sculptor and I have a corner at home where I used
to sculpt marble with some friends. Even the twelve
and a half metre Salamander was made there”.
Lera has shown the actual possibility of successfully
interpreting respect for man’s needs with those
of nature. The shape and function of a building
does not just end there but they communicate with
space and nature in perfect harmony. His concept
of architecture is the fusion between history, culture
and art. Tiziano Lera is a bioarchitect in the
true sense of the word, whose vision is constantly
projected in the future. In his vision of architecture,
materials take shape stimulated by the nature
they are surrounded with. The transformation, in
the project’s very being, is an added value exalting
the landscape, rebuilding the identity of a place
where to live better. An example is the project presented
in Shanghai Grattacielo che non offende il
Come si riesce a unire arte e natura?
“Per me è normale!
Space for mediation and relaxing on lake “Vittorio”
Tuscan archipelago. The hanging stones are perforated
What is the major attention an architect
must have for his project?
“I wouldn’t talk about attention but
I’d call it love. An architect must
withhold and reveal the dreams of
those who come to him, he must be
aware that he’s going to do something
which is not his style but he goes to
dress up other people’s dreams. Dreams
which I try to make true using
materials which acquire patina and
taste in time, as I also did for my
studio at Forte dei Marmi, on the
sea”. Despite destiny putting him up
against painful experiences, Tiziano
Lera did not lose faith in his professional
commitment, in mankind
and life in general. As well as sublime
professional art, the respect and
sensibility he shows, make him the
extraordinary man he is.
tacielo che non offende il cielo, dove
recupera la biomassa con il verde
verticale.
Qual è l’attenzione maggiore che
un architetto deve avere nel suo
progetto?
“Non parlerei di attenzione ma
parlerei d’amore. L’architetto deve
tempo acquistano patina e sapore,
Nonostante
il destino lo abbia costretto a
prove dolorose, Tiziano Lera non ha
perso la fiducia nel suo impegno professionale,
nel prossimo e nella vita
in generale. Oltre alla sublime arte
professionale il rispetto e la sensibilità
che dimostra lo rendono un uomo
fuori dal comune.
TUSCANY & ART I Forte Belvedere
by Fiammetta Casprini, ph. Pietro Savorelli, Damiano Verdiani e Benedetta Gori
ELISEO MATTIACCI AT
FORTE BELVEDERE
AMONGST COSMOS, PLANETS AND STARS
FLORENCE, CENTRE OF THE ARTISTIC UNIVERSE
TRA COSMO, PIANETI E ASTRI
FIRENZE COME CENTRO DELL’UNIVERSO ARTISTICO
With the approaching summer season, the Medici court opens once
more to the public and for the third consecutive year offers itself
to exhibitions and events centred round contemporary artists.
From 2nd July to 14th October, Forte Belvedere will host “Gong”,
a vast exhibition curated by Sergio Risaliti dedicated to Eliseo Mattiacci.
Amongst the great names of contemporary art Mattiacci certainly holds a
prominent role, thanks to his avant-garde character. Pioneer of Italian art
in the Sixties, the artist has always distinguished himself for the unconventional
use of materials, starting from sand, from glass up to the great burning
passion for metals. “Gong” is an artistic itinerary of an astronomical
inspiration which brings together the artist’s most important works, aimed
at exploring the cosmos, planets and stars, rhythms and geometries which
belong to the infinite universe. Twenty sculptures and eighty drawings,
all unknown, will animate in a riot of shapes and different materials, the
exterior of the Forte and inside the Palazzina. Florence, with each year that
passes, confirms itself the capital of the artistic and cultural world, vibrant
and dynamic city and not just the cradle of the Renaissance.
(In the picture: Eliseo Mattiacci, Colpo di Gong, 1993)
all’universo infinito. Venti sculture e ottanta disegni inediti animeranno
going from the greenest menu to fish.
Cecchi. Tra i nomi selezionati troviamo Stefano Di
Battista insieme a Nicky Nicolai ed Elio accompagnato
Schieppati: the first two, very famous in all the
world’s jazz circles and not only, make up a duo of
saxophone and voice, an absolute couple, expression
of Italian pop music at its best. Elio, famous
for his “Storie Tese”, has another role here, different
from what we are used to seeing on TV. Together
with Luca Schieppati at the piano, he presents
a classic music show and explains: “we are
in a historic phase where the need for quality is
felt, but few know these pieces. Thus our intention
is to play them for those who would never have
had the opportunity nor the will to listen to them”.
This artistic itinerary will take place on Saturday,
30th June with Stefano Di Battista and Nicky
in TV.
TUSCAN WINES
Pagina a cura dell’Associazione Italiana Sommelier Toscana
REGIONE TOSCANA
30 MILLION EUROS FOR TUSCANY’S WINE
TRENTA MILIONI DI EURO PER LA TOSCANA DEL VINO
It is well known that Italy contributes generously to the costs of the
European Community and the latter redistributes them to all the
member states with quite complicated criteria but in any case, based
on projects held to be strategic for the future economy or support for
those sectors which globalization has rendered more vulnerable.
Within the field of the OCM (Common organization of the market of the
viticulture sector)18 million euros have been allocated for investments
to rebuild and reconvert vineyards in Tuscany. Added to this are other
11.5 million euros destined to the promotion of wine on international
markets, supporting our wine exports in a phase of development and
consolidation of the market.
Of course, before making this latter measure work, it will be necessary
to wait for the Ministry of Agriculture to adopt the necessary procedures
even if the President of Tuscany, Enrico Rossi and the head of the
agriculture department Marco Remaschi are especially optimistic, fully
aware of the importance of our region in the wine sector.
For those who are not in the sector, these economic and political measures
appear distant from reality and the consumer. Instead, they result
as being very solid, in order to consent Italy and Tuscany, especially, to
compete qualitatively on the markets in the following years. Tuscany has
always been considered a leader region for wine but if it is not permitted
to carry out efficient maintenance and rejuvenation of vineyards then
it will turn out to be more vulnerable to attacks from other producing
countries, including France.
Comunità Europea e quest’ultima li ridistribuisce a tutti i paesi
all’agricoltura Marco Remaschi sono particolarmente ottimisti, consapevoli
Francia compresa.
Autoritratto di
Andrea Moretti
“A photograph is neither captured nor taken
by force. It offers itself. It is the photo
which captures you” (Henri Cartier Bresson)
There are moments, instants, which deserve to be told.
Hardly perceivable gestures which are captured to become
protagonists of history, and the camera is the narrator.
Then there are emotions, feelings which dot our immense
“being” and which become spokespeople of sincere
messages: that, in life, as in photography, the winners are
those who tip the scales in favour of the heart and soul.
Andrea Moretti, a photographer first for passion and la-
- 82 -
ter as a profession, class of 1969, is an example.
“The camera is my travelling and life companion.
It is a tool which connects people, the subjects
and the photographer. Because the ties, those established
before and during the shoot, are able to
create empathy, they are to be cultivated and developed
with respect. My father, a great travel enthusiast
like me, taught me this: travel in search of
self-discovery and human relationships”. Moretti
says. And Andrea carries this message with him,
right there, at the bottom of his heart’s pocket.
“I have now been working for several years in the
world of the web as an Information System Architect
for various private and public companies. If I am now
a professional photographer I owe it to my father and,
most of all, to my wife who spurned me on to invest
in my passion. I have always been fascinated by people
and constantly look for the “human factor” that
I want to portray through my vision of the world”.
And it is the gesture, that precise human gesture,
upon which Andrea filters the scenes of daily life
and the catering industry. For about four years he
has taken part in important food-and-wine events as
a photographer such as “Sangiovese Purosangue” in
Siena, Rome and Milan. “Le Strade della Mozzarella”
in Paestum, “Ein Prosit” in Tarvisio and the “Festa
della Pasta” in Gragnano, just to mention a few. He
pubbliche e private.
professionista a manifestazioni enogastronomiche
importanti come “Sangiovese Purosangue” a Siena,
Roma e Milano, “Le strade della Mozzarella“ a Paestum,
“Ein Prosit” a Tarvisio e la “Festa della Pasta”
is specialised in portraits and his focus
is on people:
“Out of all that surrounds the world
of food-and-wine, with experience I
have concentrated all my energies on
the kind gestures of people and on the
imagination that lies behind a certain
dish. More than just telling of a mere
representation, often too didactic, my
stylistic research verges on the intention
of communicating what for me
is a person’s work in the dining room
and the kitchen and to capture what
a dish, a single ingredient or a gesture
revives in our culinary imagination”.
In the dining room of a restaurant,
ways and gestures count more than
anything else.
Andrea is right: after a culinary experience,
whatever our opinion is, we
will always remember that smile or
that kind word which made us feel at
home. Much more than the plate of tagliatelle
al ragù which inebriates the
senses.
piatto. Più che raccontare una
mera rappresentazione, spesso troppo
nostro bilancio, ricorderemo sempre
quel sorriso o quella parola gentile
che ci ha fatto sentire a casa. Ancor
inebria i sensi.
TUSCAN CURIOSITY I Dante e San Godenzo
by Giuliana Cantini, ph. Francesco Noferini, Sandro Zagli
Even as that stream which holdeth its
The first from Monte Veso tow’rds the
East,
Upon the left-hand slope of Apennine,
Which is above called Acquacheta….
(Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy,
Inferno, c. XVI)
A
land that was of great inspiration
to the exile Dante Alighieri
about to write his “Comedy”
was San Godenzo, last stronghold of
the land of Tuscany before crossing
the border towards Romagna in the
heart of the National Park of the Casentinesi
Forests. The Poet Master
loved those places so much that he
mentioned the waterfall of Acquacheta
in his “Inferno”. But not just that:
legend has it that the beautiful sultry
area called “Gorga Nera” (lately the
subject of an environmental recovery)
inspired Alighieri with the wellknown
“Selva Oscura” (Dark Wood).
That Dante Alighieri passed through
San Godenzo is now a fact: it was
1302 when in the Benedictine Abbey,
Come quel fiume c’ha proprio cammino
Una terra che fu di grande ispirazione
per l’esule Dante Alighieri
in procinto di scrivere
la sua “Commedia”. Parliamo di San
Godenzo, ultimo baluardo di terra di
Toscana prima di sconfinare verso
la Romagna, nel cuore del Parco Nazionale
delle Foreste Casentinesi. Il
Sommo Poeta amava talmente tanto
quei luoghi da menzionare nell’Inferno
la cascata dell’Acquacheta. Ma
non solo: una leggenda narra anche
che la bellissima zona umida denominata
Gorga Nera (luogo recentemente
oggetto di recupero ambientale) abbia
ispirato all’Alighieri addirittura
la conosciutissima “Selva Oscura”.
Che Dante Alighieri sia passato da San
Godenzo è ormai risaputo: era infatti
il 1302 quando nell’Abbazia Benedettina,
che ancora oggi sorge all’interno
which still stands within the historic centre, the
convention between Guelph and Ghibellines exiles
took place. The struggles in Florence between black
Guelphs on one side and white Guelphs and Ghibellines
on the other, brought to the expulsion of
the latter faction of the city, with a death sentence
in absentia for Dante issued in January of the same
year by the Podestà of Florence, Cante Gabrielli da
Gubbio. The Whites fled and Dante with them, who
found exile at his friends’, the Counts Guidi in Casentino.
Whites and Ghibellines, however, schemed
revenge and plotted their return to Florence: thus
the Convention at the choir of the Abbey of San Godenzo.
Substantially, the San Godenzo Convention
took place to set up an agreement among the noble
families exiled from Florence, with notarial deed
drawn up by the notary Ser Giovanni Buto d’Ampinana,
to financially guarantee the Ubaldini family,
lords of Mugello, should they undergo an attack by
Florence on their castle Castello di Montaccianico.
An evocative story with reliable historic sources
but allows for dreams and the thought that the
magic of these places was fundamental for the
birth of the most loved work of Italian literature.
“Dante Ghibellino” takes place every year to celebrate
the convention of San Godenzo, this year
fixed for Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July.
Bianchi e ghibellini, tuttavia, meditavano
“Per colpa di Zico” is a journey through the passion which exploded in the warm days of Spain
’82, in front of the talented Brazilian genius. Dreams, joys, bitterness, experienced through
the eyes of the various protagonists whose emotions mark the first part of the story. A crisis of
conscience of a football procurator (and author) Leonardo Corsi, exasperated by the swings of a long
passion but unable to escape; those small idiosyncrasies, the superstitious quirks of obsessed coaches
and volcanic presidents, the literary face of the often unaware characters. The pains of a supporter
with no possible glory, the talent scout’s romantic intuition, the forbidden dream of an anarchic
centre forward hibernating in the minor leagues. The veiled humanity behind the football scenes.
Florence, 1943-1944. Gino Bartali, a young and famous champion, decides to risk his own life
just to save that of other people. And this is how he lent himself to using his green bike’s
cane to hide false documents used to expatriate Jewish citizens . He was arrested and risked
facing the firing squad but at the end, he managed to get away. It is for these feats that Gino Bartali,
in 2013, was proclaimed “Giusto fra le Nazioni” (A just man in the Nations). Sports, courage,
heroism, reckless youth, tragic events, moments of life blend in the book “La bicicletta di Bartali”
(Bartali’s bike), a short story, full of verve, irony and unexpected twists thanks to Simone Dini
Gandini’s pen, born in Viareggio in 1986. Although he narrates dramatic events his writing is full
of rhythm and manages to capture our imagination also thanks to Roberto Lauciello’s illustrations.
Firenze, 1943-1944.
GLOBALIZATION AND
VIRTUAL BUSINESS
GLOBALIZZAZIONE E COMMERCIO VIRTUALE
Distribution is the challenge which companies must face on a global
level. If, on the one hand, globalization has standardized and
evened out production, scenarios, unheard of until a few years
ago, have now opened up for many companies.
In the past, the foreign markets were the prerogative of a restricted elite
of companies who were able to afford costly feasibility studies on the
convenience of opening up a business in remote countries.
Everything has changed with the advent of Internet, even the way of entering
foreign markets. Nowadays, companies invest in the construction
of their digital image, making web sites and high quality online shops
able to communicate the strength of their brand on a global level. Once
the project has been put into operation it is enough to do a geo-localized
marketing campaign oriented towards the country they want to enter
to make their brand and product known and appreciated. With studies
from the Internet, in a short time it is possible to understand in a short
time if it is convenient to open up shops in that country with much lower
fino a qualche anno fa.
aprire attività in nazioni remote.
failure risks as compared to the traditional methods.
Maybe we are not yet aware of it but with each day that passes whole categories of products
are becoming impossible to find in cities. Stereo systems, hats, accessories for
luxury clothes, armories and many other activities seem to have disappeared into thin
air or confined to dark corners in some shops.
In reality these products have not disappeared but they have simply moved to where there
are still customers interested in buying them, the Internet. A new market of millions
of customers who do not have opening hours or holidays. Lots of companies have managed
to reduce management costs of shops (rent, employees, bills, etc..) and to optimize
prices, relaunching their business.
This digital drift which seems irreversible is instead re-evaluating physical presence. A
shop can be more successful than any kind of digital publicity doing that which, with
the right technical instruments, in jargon is called “multichannel retailing” or rather
giving the customer the feeling of being on a web site when they are in the shop and at
the same time giving the feeling of being in a shop when comfortably lying down on the
sofa at home.
