Cari amici della musica corale, 

un caloroso benvenuto alla quinta edizione del nostro 

festival internazionale „Venezia in Musica“ . Dal 2003 

si incontrano ogni anno i cori provenienti da vari paesi 

nella capitale mondiale della musica, per concertare 

insieme e provare l’indimenticabile atmosfera della 

città lagunare in cui si fa vivere la propria esperienza 

artistica . 

Quest’anno abbiamo deciso di fare del nostro festival 

„Venezia in Musica“ anche un concorso – dando così 

seguito ad una crescente richiesta a livello internazionale 

. Siamo convinti che „Venezia in Musica“ avrà così 

maggiori possibilità di espansione conquistandosi una 

prestigiosa posizione nella serie di festival di MUSICA 

MUNDI . 

Nel 2008 festeggeremo venti anni di attività: venti anni 

fa infatti abbiamo iniziato con primo festival corale di 

Budapest – una nuova stagione di festival e concorsi corali 

internazionali denominata Musica Mundi, che gode 

di un consolidato successo mondiale . Ad oggi sono state 

organizzate più di 80 manifestazioni basate su questa 

innovativa formula di concorso corale al quale parteci- 

pano in media dai 10 ai 400 cori . In totale hanno partecipato 

ai nostri festival più di 4 .300 cori provenienti 

da 90 nazioni . Il prossimo anno avranno luogo i „World 

Choir Games Graz 2008“, l’olimpiade dei cori, la fortunata 

manifestazione che con questa sua quinta edizione 

costituisce il più alto tra gli highligts della nostra programmazione 

. Già da oggi desidero invitarvi a Graz ed ai 

nostri prossimi concorsi previsti nel 2008 . 

Desidero infine ringraziare i nostri amici della Target Travel 

e tutti i collaboratori per l’eccezionale lavoro svolto 

ed auguro al nostro festival Venezia in Musica molto 

successo ed a tutti buon divertimento . 

Dear Choir Friends, 

We cordially welcome you to the 5th International Choral 

Festival “Venezia in Musica .” As every year since 2003, 

choirs from a variety of countries will be meeting together 

in the world music capital to organise concerts 

together and experience the utterly unique atmosphere 

of the lagoon city in connection with their own artistic 

activities . 

This year we have decided not only to continue to establish 

Venezia in Musica as an international festival with 

concerts in Venice and Jesolo, but also to announce the 

event as an international competition - in response to 

growing international demand . We are convinced that 

Venezia in Musica will attain a wider dissemination 

through this and that it will earn a firm place within the 

framework of the MUSICA MUNDI competitions . 

The year 2008 will mark the twentieth anniversary of the 

year in which we created a new series of international 

choral competitions with the first MUSICA MUNDI event 

in Budapest . It attracted worldwide attention . Meanwhile 

over 80 events have been carried out according to this 

innovation competition concept . The number of choirs 

has varied between 10 and 400 . Altogether, approximately 

4 .300 choirs from about 90 countries have visited 

our events . Next year the “5th World Choir Games Graz 

2008,” the Olympics for choirs, will create a further climax 

to this series of successes . I already have the pleasure 

today of extending you our cordial invitation to Graz, 

as well as to our other competitions taking place in the 

year 2008 . 

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to our partner,

Un ponte per incontrarsi

Il 1° Concorso Corale di Budapest la cui prima edizione risale al 1988 ha dato vita ad una delle più importanti serie 

di manifestazioni culturali d’Europa, denominata MUSICA MUNDI, che è diventato ormai un nome famoso in tutto il 

mondo grazie all’alto livello raggiunto sia sotto il profilo artistico che organizzativo nonché punto di riferimento della 

coralità internazionale . 

Il più grande successo della Fondazione INTERKULTUR, organizzatrice di questi eventi musicali, è stata l’idea di 

applicare l’antico ideale olimpico ad una con una manifestazione corale dalla quale sono nate le Olimpiadi corali 

nel 2000 a Linz (Austria) e in Corea del sud nell’ottobre del 2002, che segnano anche il momento d’inizio di un 

movimento corale olimpico . 

L’idea 

MUSICA MUNDI è divenuto ormai sinonimo di un concetto artistico unico nell suo genere, poiché ha introdotto una 

novità rispetto al passato . Mentre importanti concorsi corali tradizionali sono riservati soltanto a cori appartenenti ad 

un’élite a livello internazionale, MUSICA MUNDI, collocandosi parallelamente alla forma tradizionale, apre le porte del 

confronto artistico a tutti i cori desiderosi di vivere l’esperienza del concorso e del festival in campo internazionale 

come momento di crescita . Uno dei valori ai quali il Comitato artistico di INTERKULTUR tiene maggiormente, è che all’interno 

delle proprie manifestazioni possano trovare spazio sia i migliori gruppi, sia la grande massa dei cori . Questa 

scelta artistica è stata copiata da numerosi concorsi sorti in questi ultimi anni . Con l’idea di organizzare le Olimpiadi 

corali ogni due anni, INTERKULTUR ha trovato la direzione che incoraggia il movimento corale internazionale verso 

nuovi impulsi e prospettive . 

La funzione pedagogica 

Le manifestazioni di MUSICA MUNDI non sono però solamente concorsi e festival internazionali . Momento di grande 

interesse per i cori partecipanti costituiscono anche le numerose offerte di perfezionamento fondate su una grande 

competenza artistica e pedagogica . 

Durante la fase della consultazione per esempio, i cori hanno la possibilità di lavorare insieme a giurie internazionali 

ricevendo opinioni in merito al livello artistico nonché preziosi consigli pedagogico-artistici per affrontare meglio 

l’interpretazione del programma scelto . 

Parallelamente ai concorsi si organizzano quindi tra l’altro congressi , seminari per direttori di coro, corsi di perfezionamento, 

conferenze di compositori ed esperti della scena corale mondiale su temi specifici . I concerti e i suggestivi 

canti a cori uniti dei partecipanti accentuano ancora di più il momento emozionante tipico degli incontri internazionali 

di INTERKULTUR

Il nuovo concetto di base si concretizza nella realizzazione di concorsi che offrono più categorie divise per gradi di difficoltà 

per tutti i tipi di coro con o senza brani d’obbligo . In essi si vive un’atmosfera unica, in cui si offrono condizioni 

di partecipazione vantaggiose, dense occasioni di contatti artistici, interessanti workshops e consultazioni con esperti 

prima e dopo la prova in concorso vera e propria . Più di 200 tra esperti e direttori di coro in campo internazionale 

garantiscono la professionalità che contraddistingue le manifestazioni di MUSICA MUNDI .

MUSICA MUNDI . Curiosità interessante: più della metà dei partecipanti non raggiunge i 25 anni di età .

Connecting Bridges of 

INTERKULTUR 

The First International Choir Competition of Budapest, which was launched in 1988, was the start of one of the largest 

and most successful series of cultural events in Europe . The name of these novel choir competitions and festivals, 

MUSICA MUNDI, has meanwhile become known throughout the world for its high artistic and organisational standards 

and has become a concept for the choir-orientated public, with enthusiastic followers all over the world . These 

events are organized by the non-profit organisation INTERKULTUR Foundation . The Foundation’s biggest success so 

far, was to bring the antique Olympic idea to the choral world . The Choir Olympics 2000 in Linz (Austria) and the Choir 

Olympics 2002 in Busan (South Korea) were also the start of a Choir Olympic movement . 

the idea 

Meanwhile MUSICA MUNDI has become the symbol for a unique artistic idea, which consists of a new interpretation 

concerning the execution of choir Festivals: In comparison to the meritorious traditional choir competitions, where 

only those choirs which belong to the international elite compete, the MUSICA MUNDI competitions are open for the 

first time to all choirs that are interested in gaining international festival and competition experience and want to 

be able to compare themselves with other choirs . The artistic committee of the foundation places emphasis on the 

presence of the highest level of choral performers as well as on the presence of the greatest diversity of choral performers 

in all competitions . This new type of competition has been copied by numerous newly launched competitions 

in the last few years . With the idea to organize the Choir Olympics biennial, INTERKULTUR Foundation has opened a 

door to new impulses and perspectives for the national and international choral movement . 

the pedagogicaL concept 

The MUSICA MUNDI events are not just competitions and international choir festivals, they gain their competence 

and lasting effect on its participants more and more by pedagogical offers . In consultation rounds, for example, the 

choirs have the chance to work together with the international jury and to get advice on their current level of performance, 

competent pedagogical and artistic information and suggestions as to how to interpret the chosen piece . 

In connection with that conventions, seminars for conductors, composer portraits and lectures are being offered at 

the MUSICA MUNDI events . Friendship and encounter concerts reinforce this big emotional effect of the international 

choir-meetings organized by INTERKULTUR Foundation . 

the competitions 

There are various categories for all choir types and choir levels in different degrees of difficulty, with and without 

compulsory pieces . They offer a unique atmosphere, good competitive conditions, intensive artistic contacts, various 

consultation programs and workshops, as well as practice opportunities with international performers . More than 

200 experts and leading choirmasters from all over the world guarantee a high level of qualified competence in all 

MUSICA MUNDI events .

So far MUSICA MUNDI events have been taken place in the People’s Republic of China, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, 

Hungary, Israel, Italy, Malta, Republic of Korea, Sweden and USA 

the participants 

In total, 4 .300 choirs with 200 .000 active singers from 90 countries have taken part in the MUSICA MUNDI competitions 

to date . It is interesting to note that over half of the participants have been children and youth of under 25 

years of age .

Ralf Eisenbeiß, nato nel 1952, dopo il conseguimento 

della maturità ha studiato pedagogia, filologia germanica 

ed educazione musicale alla Scuola Superiore di 

Pedagogia di Zwickau diplomandosi nel 1979 . Dal 1978 

al 1981 ha studiato direzione di coro e d’orchestra alla 

Scuola Superiore di Musica Franz Liszt di Weimar . Nel 

1987 ha iniziato l’attività di insegnante di canto corale 

e direzione di coro . È stato direttore del Coro della Scuola 

Superiore di Pedagogia di Zwickau, con il quale ha 

conseguito numerosi premi in concorsi nazionali e internazionali 

. Nel suo repertorio, accanto alla letteratura a 

cappella dei diversi secoli troviamo anche opere di compositori 

contemporanei –e grandi lavori sinfonico corali . 

È stato docente al seminario centrale per direttori di coro 

di Berlino e ha tenuto numerosi corsi di perfezionamento 

. É spesso direttore ospite in patria e all’estero, tra gli 

altri ha diretto il Coro della Trinity Western University a 

Vancouver in Canada . È direttore artistico del Concorso 

Corale Internazionale Robert Schumann di Zwickau, 

inoltre è membro del Comitato artistico della Förderverein 

Interkultur e .V . e di Musica Mundi nonché direttore 

artistico dei World Choir Games .

Prof. Dr. Ralf Eisenbeiß (D) 

Ralf Eisenbeiß was born in 1952 . He studied pedagogy, 

German philology and musical education and received 

his doctorate in 1979 . From 1978 to 1981, he studied 

choir and orchestra conducting at the Franz Liszt Conservatory 

in Weimar and was appointed professor in 

1987 . He was conductor of the renowned Pedagogical 

University Zwickau Choir with which he won numerous 

prizes at national and international choir competitions 

with an extensive repertoire ranging from a cappella literature 

from different centuries, modern composers as 

well as great choral symphonic works . He was lecturer at 

the central seminar for choral conductors in Berlin . He 

often appears as guest conductor at home and abroad, 

i .e ., with the choir of the Trinity Western University in Vancouver 

(Canada) . Ralf Eisenbeiß is the artistic director of 

the International Robert Schumann Choir Competition in 

Zwickau, and member of the Artistic Committee of the 

Interkultur Foundation as well as artistic director of the 

World Choir Games .

Gábor Hollerung ha studiato all’Accademia musicale 

“F .Liszt”, diplomandosi in direzione di coro e d’orchestra 

completando in seguito gli studi ai corsi di perfezionamento 

di Eric Ericson, Kurt Masur e László Somogyi . Dal 

1989 è direttore dell’Orchestra Sinfonica Dohnányi Budafok, 

e dal 1980 è direttore della Società Corale dell’Accademia 

di Budapest, con la quale in vent’anni di 

attività ha vinto in tutti i più importanti concorsi corali 

europei tra cui Llangollen e il Gran Premio al Béla Bartók 

International Choir Competition di Debrecen . Dal 2001 

è direttore musicale dell’Ensemble Honvéd . Dal 2002 è 

primo direttore ospite della Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra 

e consulente artistico della “Philharmonia Singers 

Tel Aviv” . Nel 1988 a Budapest ha ideato e fondato un 

nuovo concorso corale rivoluzionandone la formula tradizionale 

e che ha dato origine alla consolidata serie 

di festival corali di MUSICA MUNDI . È uno dei direttori 

artistici della Förderverein INTERKULTUR e dei World 

Choir Games . Nel 2002 gli è stata conferita la Croce al 

Merito della Repubblica d’Ungheria e nel 2004 ha vinto 

il Premio Liszt . 


Gábor Hollerung studied choral and orchestral conducting 

at the Liszt Academy of Music and attended the master 

classes of Eric Ericson, Kurt Masur and László Somogyi 

. He has been the principal conductor of the Dohnányi 

Orchestra Budafok since 1989 and the conductor of the 

Budapest Academic Choral Society since 1980 with 

which he enjoyed a unique series of successes by winning 

first prizes at all recognized European choir competitions 

including Llangollen and the Grand Prix of the 

Béla Bartók International Choir Competition in Debrecen 

(Hungary) . In 2001 he became the music director of the 

Honvéd Ensemble and in 2002 he became Chief Guest 

Conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra and 

Musical Advisor of the Philharmonia Singers Tel Aviv . In 

1988 he initiated the foundation of choir events with a 

revolutionary new artistic concept in Budapest . A whole 

family of choral events was born following the example 

under the name "MUSICA MUNDI" which includes also its 

greatest festival “the Choir Olympics” . Gábor Hollerung 

is one of the artistic directors of INTERKULTUR and of the 

World Choir Games . In 2002 he was awarded the Knightcross 

Order of the Republic by the President of the Republic 

of Hungary and received the Liszt Prize in 2004 .

Christian Ljunggren ha studiato musica alla Reale Accademia 

di Musica di Stoccolma e musicologia all’università 

di Uppsala . Ha lavorato per molti anni alla Radio 

Nazionale Svedese occupandosi di musica classica . Dal 

1986 al 1998 è stato presidente della Federazione Svedese 

Direttori di Coro e dal 1998 al 2003 presidente del 

KÖRSAM, la federazione ufficiale dei cori svedesi . Christian 

Ljunggren è stato segretario generale della IFCM 

(Federazione Internazionale per la Musica Corale) di 

cui presiede il comitato direttivo dei direttori di coro . Attualmente 

dirige i due cori da lui fondati l’”Adolf Fredrik 

Madrigalkör” (1965) e il “Nicolai Kammerkör” (1974) 

- quest’ultimo è il coro della Cattedrale di Stoccolma - 

con i quali ha dato concerti in tutta Europa, Cina (1985), 

Venezuela (1992), negli Stati Uniti d’America ed in Canada 

(1994) . Dal 2002 è membro del comitato artistico 

di INTERKULTUR .

Christian Ljunggren studied music at the Royal Academy 

of Music in Stockholm and musicology at the University 

of Uppsala . For many years he worked in the classical 

department of the Swedish National Radio . From 1986- 

1998 he was the President of the Swedish Choral Directors 

Association and from 1998-2003 Chairman of 

KÖRSAM, the joint committee for the Swedish choirs . 

Christian Ljunggren has also been the General Secretary 

of IFCM (the International Federation for Choral Music) 

and is now the chairman of the IFCM Conductors Committee 

and liaison officer of IFCM . Christian Ljunggren 

founded and is conductor of two choirs: the „Adolf Fredrik 

Madrigal Choir“ formed in 1965 and the „Nicolai 

Chamber Choir“, founded in 1974, is attached to the 

cathedral of Stockholm . With his choirs he has made extensive 

tours . Apart from tours through Europe the choirs 

have been in China (1985) , in Venezuela (1992), in USA 

and Canada (1994) . Since 2002 he is Artistic Director of 

INTERKULTUR Foundation .

Nato nel 1946 è titolare della cattedra di Storia della musica 

e Semiografia musicale antica presso il Conservatorio 

“G .Verdi” di Milano . Ha studiato organo, composizione 

e direzione di coro e si è specializzato in paleografia e 

filologia musicale presso l’Università degli studi di Pavia 

. Direttore della rivista di didattica e musica corale 

“La Cartellina”, ha al suo attivo numerose pubblicazioni 

e revisioni di musiche antiche, saggi musicologici, edizioni 

critiche . Già direttore della “Corale universitaria di 

Torino”, del “Coro del Teatro comunale di Bologna”, del 

“Polyphoniae studium” e maestro del “Coro da camera 

della RAI di Roma”, è attualmente direttore artistico e 

musicale dei “Solisti del madrigale” e del “Collegium 

vocale nova ars cantandi” . Per sua iniziativa sono sorti 

i corsi triennali di perfezionamento “Roberto Goitre”, 

dedicati alla direzione di coro e allo studio dell’interpretazione 

della musica vocale antica . Collabora con la RAI, 

con la Fondazione “Gioacchino Rossini” di Pesaro, con la 

Fondazione “Guido d’Arezzo” dell’omonima città e con 

l’Istituto Cherubini di Roma . Membro della Commissione 

artistica della FENIARCO, è presente nelle giurie dei 

più importanti concorsi nazionali e internazionali quali 

Arezzo, Gorizia, Tours, Budapest, Vittorio Veneto, Trento, 

Milano, Zwickau, ecc . e viene spesso invitato a tenere 

relazioni in convegni musicologici . Ha fatto parte della 

giuria alle scorse Olimpiadi corali di Linz (Austria, 2000), 

Busan (Corea, 2002), e Brema (Germania, 2004) . 

Giovanni Acciai (I) 

Giuria- Jury 

Giovanni Acciai was born in 1946 . He teaches musical 

history and early music semiography at the Conservatory 

“G . Verdi“ Milan . He studied organ, composition and 

choir conducting and got a specialisation in music paleography 

and philology at Pavia University . He is director 

of the didactic magazine of choir music “La Cartellina“ 

and has 

published several articles and reviews on early music, 

musical essays and critics . He was conductor of the 

“Corale universitaria di Torino“, of the “Coro del Teatro 

comunale di Bologna“, of the Chamber choir of the Italian 

Radio and of the “Polyphoniae studium“ . At present 

Giovanni Acciai conducts the “Solisti del madrigale“ and 

the “Collegium vocale nova ars cantandi“ . The three-year 

masterclasses “Roberto Goitre“ for choir conducting and 

for the interpretation of early vocal music were created 

on his initiative . He collaborates with the RAI, the “Fondazione 

G . Rossini“ in Pesaro, the “Fondazione G . d’Arezzo“ 

in Arezzo and with the “Istituto Cherubini“ in Rome . He 

is member of the artistic commission of FENIARCO and 

member of the jury in important national and international 

choir contests (Arezzo, Budapest, Gorizia, Tours, 

Vittorio Veneto, Trento, Milano, Zwickau a .o .) and at the 

Choirolympics in Linz (Austria, 2000), Busan (Corea, 

2002) and Bremen (Germany, 2004) .

Franz M . Herzog è direttore, compositore nonché insegnante 

. Ha studiato composizione a direzione corale alla 

Facoltà di Musica dell’Università di Graz, diplomandosi 

con lode in direzione . Una borsa di studio gli ha permesso

Ericson . Nel 1994 ha fondato l’ensemble CANTUS, focalizzando 

il repertorio sulla musica contemporanea . È 

direttore artistico del Vocalforum Graz e del gruppo Cantanima 

(Coro giovanile statale della Stiria) . In veste di 

compositore Franz Herzog ha pubblicato vari lavori per 

coro a cappella e per coro ed orchestra per le Edizioni 

Helbling . Per i suoi meriti artistici gli è stato conferito un 

riconoscimento dal Ministero Federale per la Scienza e 

la Ricerca . Franz Herzog è molto richiesto sulla scena 

internazionale in qualità di direttore, compositore nonché 

docente di direzione corale e di educazione della 

voce . Attualmente dirige la cattedra di direzione di coro 

al Conservatorio Johann-Joseph-Fux di Graz, inoltre è 

titolare di vari corsi alla facoltà di Musica dell’Università 

di Graz . È membro della direzione artistica della Fondazione 

INTERKULTUR per i World Choir Games di Graz .

Franz M. Herzog (A) 

Giuria - Jury 

Franz M . Herzog is conductor, composer as well as music 

educator . He studied composition and choral conducting 

at the University of Music in Graz, graduating with distinction 

in conducting . A scholarship enabled him to undertake 

further studies with Eric Ericson . 1994 he founded 

CANTUS, an ensemble which is specialized on contemporary 

music . He is also artistic director of Vocalforum 

Graz and Cantanima (State Youth Choir of Styria) . As a 

composer Franz Herzog published many woks for choir 

a cappella and for orchestra and choir with the Edition 

Helbling . He received an award as acknowledgement of 

his achievements from Federal Ministry of Science and 

Research . Franz Herzog is internationally active in his capacities 

as conductor, composer and teacher of choral 

conducting and voice training . He is presently director 

of the Department of Choral Conducting at the Johann- 

Joseph-Fux Conservatory Graz as well as a lecturer at 

University of Music Graz . He collaborates with INTERKUL- 

TUR for which he is presently one of the artistic directors 

of the of 5th Choir Olympic Games in Graz .

Aurelio Porfiri ha studiato organo, piano, composizione, 

direzione corale, canto gregoriano e polifonia musicale 

con maestri quali Giuseppe Agostini, Nazario Carlo Bellandi, 

Domenico Bartolucci e Alberto Meoli . È diplomato 

in musica corale al Conservatorio San Pietro a Maiella di 

Napoli . Oltre ad essere direttore musicale della Chiesa e 

del coro di Santa Susanna è anche il maestro del coro 

Santa Susanna Singers . Dal 1993 è organista sostituto 

del Vicariato della Città del Vaticano nella Basilica di San 

Pietro ed organista incaricato per l’Udienza generale del 

Santo Padre . Si è esibito in vari concerti con il coro femminile 

Regina Pacis, dirigendo sue composizioni nonché 

un programma di canto gregoriano con i monaci cistercensi 

di San Bernardo alle Terme (Roma), concerti registrati 

e trasmessi da Radio Vaticana . Radio Vaticana ha 

registrato sue opere anche durante funzioni liturgiche 

commissionandogli lavori anche per altri programmi . 

Come compositore ha scritto oratori, messe, mottetti ed 

inni in lingua italiana ed inglese . Accanto alla musica 

sacra che costituisce la gran parte della sua attività musicale, 

Aurelio Porfiri ha scritto vari brani per organo, piano, 

flauto e per altri strumenti . Collabora inoltre con varie 

case editrici come le Edizioni San Paolo, Città Nuova e 

Hortus Conclusus .

Giuria - Jury 

Aurelio Porfiri has studied organ, piano, musical composition, 

choral conducting, Gregorian Chant and polyphonic 

music with various masters, such as Giuseppe Agostini, 

Nazario Carlo Bellandi, Domenico Bartolucci and Alberto 

Meoli . Aurelio Porfiri graduated in choral music from the 

Conservatorio di San Pietro a Maiella in Naples . In addition 

to conducting the choir of Santa Susanna, at Santa 

Susanna Church in Rome where he is also Music Director, 

he is director of the Santa Susanna Singers . Beginning in 

1993, he became a substitute organist of the Vatican 

City Vicariate in the St . Peter's Basilica and organist in 

charge for the general audience of the Holy Father . He 

has directed various performances (broadcasted on the 

Vatican Radio) of his own compositions with the female 

choir Regina Pacis, as well as a program of Gregorian 

chant with the Cistercian monks of San Bernardo alle 

Terme (Rome) . Some of his works were commissioned 

and broadcasted by the Vatican Radio during liturgical 

functions . The radio has also chosen other works of Porfiri 

for other programmes . As a composer, his wide ranging 

forms include oratorios, masses, motets and hymns 

in Italian and English . Apart from sacred music, which 

makes up a major part of his musical activity, Porfiri has 

also written various pieces for organ, piano, flute and 

other instruments . He has also collaborated with various 

publishers, such as Edizioni San Paolo, Città Nuova and 

Hortus Conclusus .
