I due registiaustraliani, già conosciuti al grande pubblico per “Daybreakers- L’ultimo vampiro”, rivisitano un tema classico della fantascienzacome quello dei viaggi nel tempo con una narrazioneoriginale e un susseguirsi di colpi di scena imprevedibili, paradossitemporali e continue sorprese.“Prima di mezzanotte”, “La notte del giudizio”, “Boyhood”con la candidatura agli Oscar e adesso “Predestination”.Possiamo dire sia stato un periodo fortunato per te?Credo che l’obiettivo di un attore sia far amare i propri film alpubblico. E questo spesso non succede! Passi tutta la vita a farespettacolo, in alcuni periodi sei super richiesto e in altri no. Peròho sempre avuto quella sensazione che se rimani coerente con testesso, se non passi la tua carriera a seguire le mode... perlomenonon fai la figura dell’idiota.Cosa puoi dirci di “Predestination”?Non ho mai visto qualcosa di simile in precedenza. I fratelliSpierig sono ragazzi di talento, questo è un passo avanti perloro e la loro carriera. Posso affermare con sicurezza che è statoil periodo più bello da quando ho girato “Gattaca”. Durante leriprese di “Gattaca” ero sul set ogni giorno, amandone ogni singoloistante, sentivo di stare facendo qualcosa di molto originale.Mi è anche piaciuto recitare in “Training Day”, un gran film,ma è ancora difficile fare un film poliziesco originale.Cosa ci puoi dire invece della tua partner Sarah Snook?La sua performance è il motore del film, è di certo il motivoper cui andare a vederlo. Uno dei problemi intrinseci del film èproprio l’identità di Sarah, che interpreta sia un ruolo maschileche femminile. Se fosse svelata subito, si rovinerebbe l’interointreccio della trama. E poi è stata anche una sfida particolarmentestrana sapere che l’intera storia poggiava su un’attricequasi sconosciuta ma che offriva un’interpretazione brillante.In cosa ti vedremo prossimamente?A breve uscirà “Regression”, con Emma Watson, diretto daAlejandro Amenábar, lo stesso regista di “The Others” per intenderci,un regista fantastico. È un film strano, ambientato negliAnni 80, in cui interpreto un detective che indaga su un casodi riti satanici in Minnesota.Quale ruolo ti piacerebbe interpretare in futuro?Sto cercando di convincere Jason (il produttore cinematograficoJason Blum, ndr) a fare “Macbeth” (ride, ndr). Sarebbe genialeun “Macbeth” del produttore di “Paranormal Activity”. Un filmdal perfetto mix intellettuale e senza troppe pretese. The two Australian directors, already well-known for“Daybreakers”, revisit the classic sci-fi theme of time travel withan original story full of unpredictable twists, temporal paradoxesand big surprises.“Midnight run”, “The Purge”, “Boyhood” that got an Oscarnomination, and now “Predestination”. Can we say this is apretty good moment in your career?I think every actor wants people to love their films, but this doesn’talways happen unfortunately! You spend your life working hard,sometimes everyone wants you and sometimes they don’t, but I’vealways had the feeling that if you stay true to yourself, if you don’tspend your career pandering to fashion...well, at least that wayyou don’t end up looking like an idiot.What can you tell us about “Predestination”?I’ve never seen anything like it before. The Spierig brothers are reallytalented, and this film is a big step for them and their career asfilm makers. I can certainly say that one of the best periods I hadwas when we were making “Gattaca”. I was on the set every singleday, loving every minute of it, and I felt I was doing somethingtruly original. I had a great time filming “Training Day” too, agreat film, even though it’s hard to make an original detective film.What can you tell us about your partner in the film, SarahSnook?Her performance is the film’s driving force, and definitely one ofthe main reasons for going to see it. One of the intrinsic issuesin the film is Sarah’s precise identity, seeing as she plays both amasculine and a feminine role, and if that came out immediatelyit’d ruing the entire story. It was a real challenge, knowing thatthe entire film depended on an almost unknown actress, but herinterpretation was truly brilliant.What do you see yourself doing next?“Regression”, with Emma Watson, is coming out soon, directed byAlejandro Amenàbar, the one who did “The Others” if you didn’tknow, a fantastic director. It’s a strange film, set in the ‘eighties.I play a detective investigating a case of satanic rituals in Minnesota.What role would you like to play in future?I’m trying to convince Jason (film producer Jason Blum – ed) todo “Macbeth” (laughs – ed). A “Macbeth” by the producer of“Paranormal Activity” would be a stroke of genius, a perfect intellectualmix and not too pretentious.
