E. Füsun Alioglu, Y. Kösebay Erkan, M. Alper, B. Alper5. Unprecedented Tradition in Anatolia: Mosques withSummer and Winter SectionsAs we have seen in two examples in Ortahisar, the Alaaddinand Çukur Mosques, both have winter and summer sections. This practice having two mosques under the same name is nota common typology that we see in Anatolia, and perhaps inother Islamic traditions. However, having two structures witha similar approach must have been more than a coincidence. When looked carefully into literature, such a dual use of themosques is seen in distant traditions. For example, the endowmentdeed of the tomb complex of Rab-i Rashidi in Tabrizfrom the 14th century, talks about the buildings within. The rawda section includes tomb, courtyard with a pool, mosques for winter and summer, a library, a classroom andother units. Sheila Blair in her reconstruction envisioned thebuilding as such: the winter mosque is (masjid-i Shatawi),summer mosque (suffa-i sadr) In her article Sheila Blair 6 givesthe names of other structures with summer/winter mosques. One of them is the congregational Mosque in Bastam (14thcentury) (Northern Iran). In this building the arcaded courtyardis used as summer mosque and vaulted rectangular hallis for winter mosque. Other structures can be found mostly inUzbekistan. For example:· Balyand Mosque (beginning of 16th century), Bukhara· The Ulug Beg Madrasa (15th century), winter mosque· Bolo Hauz Mosque (18th century), Bukhara· Madume Azan Mosq ,Samarkand, Summer and Wintermosques· Qutluq Murad Inaq Madrasa, Khiva (19th century) undergroundwinter mosque· Chihil Sutun Mosque, Afganistan (15th century), summerprayer hall· Sedukan Mosque (19th century), Kabul, Afganistan, summermosque· Uzbekha Mosque (19th century), Kabul, Afganistan, summermosque· Abd-al aziz Khan Madrasa, (17th century)Bukhara, summermosque· Baha’al-Din al Naqshbandi Complex (16th century) Bukhara, summer masjidRock carved spaces do have engineering concerns. The unity ofrock car ved spaces with masonr y additions in ter ms of design andengineering presents interesting solutions. The roots of Summerand Winter Mosque tradition can be found in Uzbekistan.Notes:1. Kuban, Selçuklu Çağında Anadolu Sanatı, YKY yayınları,İstanbul 2002, s.912. “12.
