Comparative AnalysisIn both of the mosques, both in winter and summer sectionsthere is a plan type based on naves.Winter section of Çukur Mosque has two naves. The naves areperpen<strong>di</strong>cular to the mihrab. This form can not be followed onthe ceiling because it is a flat roof.The Summer Mosque has two naves. Here the naves are alsoperpe<strong>di</strong>cular to the mihrab. However, this time the superstructureis formed by vaults therefore, the <strong>di</strong>rectionalty can be followedon the ceiling.The first section of the Winter Mosque of Alaad<strong>di</strong>n Mosquehas two naves. The naves can be accepted as parallel to themihrab. The ceiling is flat therefore, the <strong>di</strong>rectionality can notbe sensed.The second section of the Winter Mosque of Alaad<strong>di</strong>n Mosquehas also two naves. Here the naves are perpen<strong>di</strong>cular to themihrab. The ceiling of this part has vaults therefore the <strong>di</strong>rectionalitycan be sensed.Summer Mosque of Alaad<strong>di</strong>n Mosque has three naves. Herethe naves are perpen<strong>di</strong>cular to the mihrab. The ceiling is coveredby a vault therefore, the <strong>di</strong>rectionality can be sensed.Minaret: In both of the mosques, minarets are constructedover the roof. The hood of the minaret rises over four columns.This type of minaret is called a kiosk type minaret, which canbe found in the evolution of mosque designs. There are ampleamount of similar minarets in the region.4. ConclusionThe architectural spaces in Cappadocia are obtained by carvingout the rock. Hence, spaces are given shape by the availabilityof the tufa rock. Therefore structures with <strong>di</strong>fferentshapes and sizes can be found in the region. However culturalaspects <strong>di</strong>ctated certain plan types to be applied in rock carvedByzantine religious buil<strong>di</strong>ngs. For example single, double andtriple nave in basilical plan, cross plan and enclosed crossplan types. On the other hand some of the plan types are usedonly in carved spaces, such as rectangular spaces transversallyused (E.Akyürek,“MS IV-XI.Yüzyıllar: Kapadokya’dakiBizans”, Kapadokya, Ed.M.Sözen, Ayhan Şahenk Vakfı, İstanbul1998, s. 247). This plan type is not a common type inChristian architecture. In these churches main space lies inthe north-south <strong>di</strong>rection and apses is situated on one of thelongitu<strong>di</strong>nal sides, on the east.These buil<strong>di</strong>ngs are awkward in terms of Christian liturgicalpractice, where first examples were found in Southern Syria inthe Vth, VIth century which makes researches think that theChurches in Cappadocia has roots in Mesopotamia. (Akyürek,264). In Cappadocia, Churches No: 3, 6, 16 and 18, as wellas Saklı Church, Yılanlı Church, Tokalı II Church, GöremeChapel No: 6 have plan types as such.Muslims, by turning to Qibla in worship, may practice anywherethey like. Worship ritual does not <strong>di</strong>ctate a formal approachto mosque design. It is the reason for various mosquetypes to emerge in newly conquered lands and also by interactionwith available architectural tra<strong>di</strong>tions there. 1In Christian architecture, the symbolic character of the basilicaand the plan type urged by the rituals finds its equivalent inmosque architecture only through liturgical elements like theuse of mihrab, minbar and minaret.
