Rupestrian Mosques in OrtahisarThere are two rupestrian mosques in Ortahisar (Çukur Camiand Alaaddin Cami) which are situated at the Eski/Atik Mahalle(Old Neighborhood).Fig. 2 Street with terrasment and stairway.Çukur MosqueThe construction date of the mosque is uncertain. The plancharacteristics indicate to the 19th century. It has two parts:first section as a cave (Winter Section) and the other masonrybuilt (Summer Section).The main space of the mosque is divided into two naves innorth-south direction. The mihrab is off the center to the east.Each nave is covered by a pointed vault. One enters the cavesection from the door on the east wall. The cave section issupported by three piers. This unit has an exit. The minaret ina baldachin form is situated at the north east corner, which isidentified as kiosk type minaret. There are several empty caveand masonry structures, with unknown functions around thebuilding. The building is in a ruinous state and out of use.Çukur Mosque is situated between two stepped streets on aslopy terrain. Çukur Mosque is a structure with multi-spaces.However since they have lost their original functions, it is hardto identify them today.Çukur Mosque is composed of two sections. These are WinterMosque and Summer Mosque. Winter Mosque is a rock carvedspace Summer Mosque is stone masonry.Winter Mosque, is constructed by carving out the easternrock block. Main space is in rectangular form as much as therock could be carved. The rectangular nave is in North-Southalignment. Winter Mosque has three gates. G1 Gate opensto a small patio. G2 and G3 Gates are on the Western wall.However these two doors today function as the entrance to theSummer Mosque.
