The inscription over the gate ofthe summer mosque gives the 1274 (Hijrah)/1858 date. It isassumed that there was another mosque in the place of thisdeduced from the spoiled material found on and around thebuil<strong>di</strong>ng.The winter mosque’s rock carved section is designed in navesparallel to the mihrab wall. The naves are covereed by rockcarved flat ceilings. The masonry section of the winter mosqueis desinged as two naves perpen<strong>di</strong>cular to the mihrab wall.The naves lying in north-south <strong>di</strong>rection are covered by barrelvaults. Summer Mosque is a rectangular space. The mosqueis designed in three naves perpen<strong>di</strong>cular to the mihrab wallwhich are covered by barrel vaults.There is a three-bay porticoat the northern facade. The roofs of the winter and summermosques are stone gable roof.In the Alaad<strong>di</strong>n Mosque the winter and summer sections areindependent contrary to Çukur Mosque. One part of the wintersection is rupestrian, the other part is masonry. Whereasthe summer mosque is constructed as stone masonry leavinga pathway between the winter mosque. The kiosk type minaretis constructed on the south-east corner of the roof of theWinter Mosque.Ab<strong>di</strong>oğlu MosqueAb<strong>di</strong>oğlu Mosque is built to the north of the Ortahisar Castel.Accor<strong>di</strong>ng to the inscriptions placed on the buil<strong>di</strong>ng, theAb<strong>di</strong>oğlu Mosque built in 1887 (1305 Hijrah).The mosque is stone masonry and in square form. It is designe<strong>di</strong>n three naves. The central unit is covered by a dome.The two lateral ones are covered by barrel vaults lying innorth-south <strong>di</strong>rection. There is a three-bay portico at thenorthern façade. The roof of the buil<strong>di</strong>ng is pitched. The kiosktype minaret is constructed on the nort-east corner of thebuil<strong>di</strong>ng. The second minaret in cylin<strong>di</strong>rical form is built in1954 and renewed in 1973.Ali Reis MosqueAli Reis Mosque is built in Yeni Mahalle. The inscription overits gate gives the construction date as 1902 (1303 Hijrah). Therectangular mosque is stone masonry. The mosque has twonaves perpen<strong>di</strong>cular to the mihrab wall on the north-south <strong>di</strong>rection.The naves are covered by barrel vaults in north-south<strong>di</strong>rection. The roof of the buil<strong>di</strong>ng is timber pitched roof. Monasteries, churches, depots and dove cotsare the main spaces. However, it is a fact that the clergymanalso accomodated here.On the other hand it can be accepted that the main residentialfabric developed together with the Turkish <strong>habitat</strong>ion. In theinitial stages, most probably the existing spaces were organisedbased on the basic needs of a rural me<strong>di</strong>aeval house.The tra<strong>di</strong>tional houses available to us <strong>di</strong>splay varios types ofconstruction tra<strong>di</strong>tions.One of them used the rock-carved spaces as dwellings. Anotherone used masonry annexes added infront or next to therock-carved spaces.
