Ithas painted interior geometric decoration. The third churchis called the Sarıca Church. It has interior decoration withgeometric pattern painted over and over again and figurativedepictions. It is supposes to date 1100 based on its decoration.Hallaç Monastery, is situated on Hallaç River, approximately1 km to the north-east of Ortahisar. Monastery is <strong>di</strong>spersed ona large area in rock-carved spaces. Anonymous Church No.1has painted geometric and figurtive interior decorations.Fırkatan Church, is on the Göreme road, approximately 1 kmto the north of Ortahisar. The church is identified as the AynalıChurch, which is part of a buil<strong>di</strong>ng complex. It has interiordecoration with painted geometric motives.Saklı Church, is situated approximately 3km to the north-westof Ortahisar.Sütunlu Church, is situated in “Mısır Ören Deresi” valley, tothe north of Ortahisar.Üzümlü Church, is situated in the Kızılçukur Valley, approximately3km to the north of Ortahisar. The interior decorationhas iconographic, painted geometric and floral patternsi aswell as figurative depictions. It is assumed to be constructe<strong>di</strong>n the 10th century based on its decoration program.MosquesThere are two rupestrian mosques in Ortahisar (Çukur Camiand Alaad<strong>di</strong>n Cami ) which are situated at the Eski/Atik Mahalle(Old Neighborhood).The mosques in Ortahisar come with a unique typology and<strong>di</strong>stinct way of a dual usage, for winter and summer. In mostof the mosques in Ortahisar, this duality can be observed,quite unique to this region. The winter parts carry rupestriansections. The buil<strong>di</strong>ng is designed for tough climatic con<strong>di</strong>tionsof the winter with low floor heights and very few openings.Whereas the summer parts are spacious spaces built withstone masonry. The plans of the summer sections <strong>di</strong>splay aunique character <strong>di</strong>vi<strong>di</strong>ng the space into two-or three bayswith masonry piers. The minarets of these mosques are rectangularin shape and the finial rise on four columns. Theseminarets can be accepted as miniscule in terms of <strong>di</strong>mensionscompared with current minarets ascen<strong>di</strong>ng to heaven.Çukur MosqueÇukur Mosque is accepted to be the earliest mosque built inOrtahisar, however it does not have an inscription giving adate for its construction. Çukur Mosque is constructed at theskirts of the castle in Atik/Eski Mahalle (Old Neighborhood).Çukur Mosque is situated between two stepped streets on aslopy terrain. Mosque is composed of two sections. Theseare Winter Mosque and Summer Mosque. Winter Mosque isa rock carved space. Summer Mosque is stone masonry. Thewinter mosque is designed with in two halls perpen<strong>di</strong>cular tothe mihrab wall. The ceiling of the halls are rock carved flatstone. The summer mosque is a rectangular space, designe<strong>di</strong>n two halls lying in north-south <strong>di</strong>rection. The halls arecovered by stone vaults. The roof of the buil<strong>di</strong>ng is flat. Thebaldechin /kiosk-type minaret is situated on the north-easterncorner of the roof.Alaad<strong>di</strong>n MosqueAlaad<strong>di</strong>n Mosque is constructed at the skirts of OrtahisarCastle in Atik/Eski Mahalle (Old Neighborhood).
