ROCK CARVED SPACES OF ORTAHISARCRHIMA-CINP projectCastlesOrtahisar Castle is a fairy chimney with 60 meters heightsituate at the south end of the current Ortahisar Square.The castle is accepted as the symbol of Ortahisar, which iscarved in several layers creating spaces connected with stairsor tunnels.İshak Castle is another fairy chimney to the west of Ortahisarsettlement. Oral sources mention that from Ortahisar to İshalCastle can be reached through tunnells.Fig. 8 Ortahisar Castle.Fig. 9 İshak Castle.Monasteries and Churches in OrtahisarThere are numerous Christian religous buildings in Ortahisartoday. This religous heritage composed of monasteries andchurhces are sütuated on the hillsides of Selim Bağ and GaripBağ rivers. Some of these anonymous buildings have cometo present day in a ruinous state. Some others are turned intodove-cots and houses through some later additions. Additionallymonasteries and churches are indetified within the residentialfabric.Anonymous Church No.1: It is situated in the Eski Mahalle(Old Neighborhood), towards the eastern side of the Castle onthe Hazım Street. This building is also identified as the HarimChurch which has painted geometric motives on the interiordecoration.Anonymous Church No.2: It is situated in the Eski Mahalle(Old Neighborhood), towards the eastern side of the Castle onthe ahead of Halit Efendi Street.The rock-carved spaces nearthe church must have been parts of a monastery.Anonymous Church No.3: It is situated in the Eski Mahalle(Old Neighborhood), towards the northern side of the Castle,looking over to the İshak Castle.
