Scalzo, 1982)This is the only painting reporting a date in the Tarentine area.The left apse preserves traces of later paintings (XVI century):Saint Leonard of Limoges and a female figure of aSaint. On the side wall there is the picture of a Pantocratoron throne. Other figures were n the archivolts of the pillars: aSaint Bishop, Saint Paul, Saint Peter, and Saint Sabinus, whichwere painted not later than in the XIII century. The wall ofthe left aisle preserves two frescoes: Saint Margaret and SaintMarina. These two figures represent the same saint, whichwas adored with a Latin name and a Greek name.The church has been recently dated back to the second halfof the XI century, but it is probably more ancient, due to thepresence of the rare triforium separating the nave from thepresbytery. The pronaos preserves traces of tombs à logette,an Early Me<strong>di</strong>eval tra<strong>di</strong>tion.4. Madonna della Scala RavineThe churchesMadonna della Greca. The church is in via del Santuario, beforethe square lea<strong>di</strong>ng to the flight of stairs for the Sanctuaryof Madonna della Scala. Originally, the church was called“Madonna della Grazia”. The present name is given by theincorrect interpretation of the XVI century inscription SCAM(ARIA) MAT(ER) GR(ATIA)E 15[..].The church was destroyed in the XVIII and the XIX centuries,during the works for the wide road lea<strong>di</strong>ng to the flight of stepsof the Sanctuary: the nave and the eventual narthex were destroyed;only the trapezoidal presbytery is left.The paintings on the back wall are dated back to the first threedecades of the XVI century, and they represent the Virginwith the Child, Saint Sebastian and Saint Roch.La Buona Nuova. The church of Buona Nuova faced thepronaos of the Sanctuary of Madonna della Scala, at the endof the flight of stairs realized in 1821. The ancient church hasthree aisles, and it was reduced to its half during the works forthe extension of the pronaos of the Sanctuary (XVII and XVI-II centuries). Many frescoes of the rich iconographic heritageare preserved.
