E. Crescenzi, M. C. Ménard4. The associated craftsmen and womenA group of craftsmen and women has recently joined theworkshops in the village. Their decision to set up their businessesin the village was largely due to their activities whichwere not compatible with the humidity which, despite ventilationsystems, is inevitable in troglodyte premises. These, forexample, include the leather goods designer whose raw materialssuffered from humidity. However, she was very happyto have left Paris where she worked for Hermès to move toTurquant and profit from the attractiveness created by this operationand the pleasures of village life. Apart from the leathergoods designer, the following have also moved to the village:- a dressmaker- the Métamorphose collective (craftsmen decorators)- a metalworker- Les Plasticiens d’Oz- a visual artist- a photographer sculptor- a jeweller- the “Le Gite” workshop- the “Troglo des Pommes Tapées”, installed since the 1980has associated itself with this project and, as a result, profitsfrom its technical support, the increased safety of the hillside, and the local development of tourism. When taken together, all these craftsmen and women and all these services representthe core of this dynamic which, over the months and years, will continue to develop and validate the objectives soughtfrom this operation.Success or failure? Only time will tell. However it would beworthwhile monitoring the project’s development over thecoming years.5. The outdoor staircaseThe recently installed (summer 2011) metal staircase linkingthe base of the hillside to its summit is the highlight ofthe operation. It replaces a small track used by inhabitants toclimb the hillside. However, it represented a long detour andhad become impracticable and dangerous. The decision wastaken to create a staircase rather than carry out the necessaryrepair works to the path. This monumental staircase providesthe finishing point to the landscape, giving it a spectacularand eye-catching appearance both by day and by night - anapproach quite different from that of the former country lane.It acts as a beacon in the landscape that is difficult to miss and,as such, increases the visibility of the arts and crafts village.ConclusionThe first workshops opened in 2009. It will be necessary tofollow the economic development of this operation over theyears to come in terms of the craftsmen and women havinglaunched themselves into this adventure, the commune whichhopes to receive confirmation of the renown and recognitionof all its efforts, and the Region which gave its support to thisinitiative and is waiting to see what impact it will have on recognitionof troglodytism as a heritage to be preserved and itspotential attractiveness. Finally, monitoring the hillside soils will be an imperativeover the coming years. The European authorities are keepinga close eye on this experiment whose example could be usedas a model in similar circumstances.Fig. 14 Wine cellar les amandiers.Fig. 15 Troglodyte restaurant l’Hélianthe: the mezzanine.Fig. 16 L’Hélianthe: the fi replaces.Fig. 17 L’Hélianthe: the dining room.137volumeRicerca_OK_2012-11-15.indd 137 16/11/2012 15:02:24
