D. CaragnanoAnother interesting scene in the Anonym Crypt is the Ascensionof Elijah: he is leaving his mantle to Elisha. This imageis the prefiguration of the Apostles’ mission, an iconographyknown in Cappadocia since the 5 th century, when it was use<strong>di</strong>n a capital from Pùsatli that is preserved in the ArchaeologicalMuseum of Kayseri 35 .The Ascension of Elijah in some Cappadocian churches isbound to the funerary decoration, as in the Karabulut Kilisesi(Aucillar/Göreme) and in Saint John’s church (Güllü Dere).In the church of Riggio, a couple of Saints is on the right ofthe Ascension of Elijah. They wear Byzantine court dress: theright figure is Potito, a young martyr particularly venerated inBasilicata and Campania.The devotion for a Saint that was not in the Byzantine calendarin<strong>di</strong>cates that the Italo-Greeks venerated some Italian Saints,as Vito, Oronzo and Potito 36 .Notes:1 V.
