RUPESTRIAN MOSQUESCRHIMA-CINP projectFig. 3 Libia, Kerba Forsatta, rupestrian mosque of TatauzinFig. 9 Turchia, Kaya Comi Urgup, plan.point for the understan<strong>di</strong>ng of Berber vernacular architecture.The main Libyan mosques are Jama Hwariuon, near Forsatta,Si<strong>di</strong> Bu Ragun, near Kabao, Thnumayat (from the 11th century),Tekut, Uazzen, Abu Zaccaria.In Tunisia, some famous rupestrian mosques are the theFig mosque and the Palm mosque in Douiret, and the Ksarmosque in Mourabtine.In Djerba there are the mosques of Iamaa Louta and Jama alBaldawi, near Ajim.There are also non Iba<strong>di</strong> mosques: in Libya and Tunisia thearchitectural lines are similar to the ancient buil<strong>di</strong>ngs of Kairouan,and the mosque of Ibn Tulun (Cairo) is characterized bynaves parallel to the qibla and an external enclosure.The Sicilian mosques are bound to the Berber culture. AldoMessina has <strong>di</strong>scovered only few years ago: they were probablyrealized during the Arab domination. The architecturalforms of Rometta look like a readaptation of the ancientmosque of Kairouan, with the common T shaped planimetryof the central gallery orthogonal to the qibla. The mosque ofSperlinga reminds the Iba<strong>di</strong> Berber mosques, with a wall parallelto the qibla and limited spaces.Further researches and a deeper knowledge of the Islamicarchitecture will allow the recognition of Sicilian mosqueswhich have been transformed in churches. The Seljuk invasionbrought Islam in Turkey in 1081. In Cappadocia there arethe rupestrian mosques of Cavusin, Zelve, Urgup, with thecharacteristic small Seljuk minarets.
