GENERAL METHODOLOGYThe mapping methodIn order to map the liverworts and hornworts from Romania, the HEPATICE 2008 software waselaborated, in concordance with the existing literature on the mapping of the Romanian flora: Ştefureac,Zahariadi & Dihoru (1971:101-111), Oltean & Ştefănuţ (2002:101-108), Ştefănuţ & al. (2003:243-248),Ştefănuţ & al. (2004:79-84) and Mihăilescu S. & Ştefănuţ (2004b:108-112).The methodology that represented the base of this software was published in detail in: Oltean &Ştefănuţ 2002:101-108 and Ştefănuţ & al. 2004:79-84. The chorology program was used also for themapping of high plants: Fabaceae (Ştefănuţ & Sanda 2008).For the Hungarian and German locality names we used the historical dictionary of localities fromTransylvania (Suciu 1967; Suciu 1968; Szabó M. A. & Szabó M. E. 1992). A part of this data has beenprocessed by Negrean G., Öllerer Kinga and Wallfisch R.Data regarding the Maramureşului Mountains by Mohan (1998), overtaken after Boros Á. & VajdaL. (1969), who, in their turn, cited the works of Boros Á. (1941b), Deyl M. (1940), Domin K. (1930),Igmandy J. (1944), Smarda J. (1936, 1938, 1944) and Suza J. (1925, 1933) were excluded because thecited localities represent the territory of Ukraine, with one exception: the Şerban Mountain from the PopIvan Mountains. The chorology data from the works of Mohan G. were taken over with skepticism, due to the factthat these data are suspect, since some common species fall out widely from their ecological distributionzone, while rare species appear frequently in certain zones; these were marked on the maps with (○).The work of Papp C. from 1967, „Briofitele din Republica Socialistă România (determinator)”(The Bryophytes from the Romanian Socialist Republic - guide) was not taken into consideration, sincethe localities mentioned in the text do not appear in all the cases in the cited publications, and for certainspecies the synonymy has been considered, which leads to great confusions. For example, the speciesMannia androgyna appears under Grimaldia dichotoma, instead of the species Mannia pilosa. Manniaandrogyna is a Mediterranean species and its distribution does not include Romania, on the other hand,M. pilosa, cited previously in the localities indicated by Papp, does not appear at all in this publication. The same confusion has been created also for Asterella gracilis, which does not appear in the guide, andis substituted with A. saccata (under „Fimbriaria fragans”).The distribution of the species in Europe was realized according to Düll 1983, Schumacker &Váňa 2000, 2005 and Söderström, Urmi & Váňa 2002, 2007.The bibliography was realized after Boros (1944c:1-74), Ştefureac, Mihai & Pascal (1970:537-543), Ştefureac & al. (1973:29-236), Ştefureac & Pascal (1981:537-543), Mohan (1998:394-418) and bychecking over 10000 botanical publications from Romania and outside the country, out of which over1800 publications of specialty were selected. The nomenclature of the hornwort and liverwort species is in concordance with the latestpublications in this field (Grolle & Long 2000; Crandall-Stotler & Stotler 2000; Renzaglia & Vaughn2000; Schumacker & Váňa 2000, 2005; Söderström, Urmi & Váňa 2002, 2007; Sabovljević & Natcheva2006).The classification of the hornwort species was done according to Renzaglia & Vaughn (2000); forthe liverworts the classification from Crandall-Stotler & Stotler (2000) was adopted, with modifications. The species lists for hornworts and liverworts is based on the chorology data and the previouslypublished lists, especially by Mihai (1983), Düll (1983), Grolle & Long (2000), Söderström, Urmi &Váňa (2002, 2005), Söderström, Urmi & Váňa (2002, 2007), Ştefănuţ (2004d, 2004i), Sabovljević &Natcheva (2006), to which later corrections and additions were done. The names of the authors are according to the author list from „Authors of plants names”(Brummitt & Powell 1992 eds.).The list of synonyms was done according to Dihoru G. (2001), Koperski & al. (2000), Müller(1906-1911, 1912-1916, 1954, 1957), Schuster (1966, 1969, 1974, 1980, 1992a, 1992b), Schumacker &Váňa (2000, 2005), Stotler & Crandall-Stotler (1977) and Warnstorf (1903).13
