THEATRE STUDIESTamar BokuchavaSOME TRENDS OF THEATRE STUDIES INXIX-XX CENTURIES THEATRE AND RITUALSummaryThe Article outlines the trends and tendencies of theatrestudies development in XIX-XX centuries. In the first part ofthe article titled “Some Trends of Theatre Studies in XIX-XXCenturies» there are discussed the factors and theories whatinfluenced the development of the new critical and historicalattitudes to the task: the socio-philosophic theories, socialanthropology, psychoanalyses, etc. The goal of the articleis to show how the interest of theatre researchers has turnedfrom the philological attitude to the history of drama towardsthe history of performance. In the turn of XIX-XX centuriesGerman literary and art historian Max Herman has founded theperformance reconstruction method he used in his historicalexplorations of the German theatre past practice in medievalera and later.The other important sources influenced the theatre historyand criticism were the new theories interpreting the essence ofculture and history itself. As an example of such theories thearticle introduces Max Weber’s three typological schemes ofhuman culture understood by him as: Hindu-Buddhist, Chinese-Confucian and Christian models. This and other attitudes tohuman culture and history affected the art and theatre practices,criticism and theory and caused the emergence of new tendenciesand developments in the mentioned spheres.
