Quest’anno Giraglia Rolex Cup vuole rendereun doveroso e affettuoso omaggio alsuo lungo passato dedicando una edizionespeciale alla città di Sanremo e al suo Club.Dal 1953 anno del debutto, per moltissimeedizioni Sanremo è stata il polo Italianodella regata che si svolgeva alternativamentedalla Francia all’Italia e viceversa in ossequioallo storico accordo Italo-Francese chemirava a rifondare i rapporti fra i due paesidopo gli anni bui della guerra. Mentre i portiFrancesi ruotavano, in Italia, Sanremo era ilpunto fermo. Sopravvennero poi difficoltà dirapporti come spesso accade, ne fece lespese la Giraglia che, anche per l’evoluzionedel Mondo dell’altura, soffrì un lentodeclino. Sono poi tornati tempi buoni, conla scelta di Saint-Tropez e poi di Genova esoprattutto con il grande entusiasmo diRolex; la vecchia regina del Mediterraneo ètornata al ruolo che merita e da ormai 12anni la sua crescita non conosce battuted’arresto. La grande accoglienza delloYacht Club Sanremo, del suo dinamico ecompetente Presidente Beppe Zaoli delSindaco Maurizio Zoccarato ci garantirannomomenti emozionanti e gradevoli.L’ospitalità nel porto vecchio anche primadella partenza della nuova regata di avvicinamentoSanremo-Saint Tropez è unaragione in più per non perdere questa grandeoccasione. Cette année, la Giraglia Rolex Cup veut rendrele chaleureux hommage qui s’impose àson long passé. Pour cela, une édition spécialesera dédiée à la ville de Sanremo et àson Club. Depuis 1953, année du lancementet pendant de très nombreuses éditions,Sanremo a été le pôle italien de larégate qui se déroulait alternativement de laFrance vers l’Italie et vice versa, pour commémorerl’accord historique signé par lesdeux pays, et rétablir les rapports bilatérauxaprès les sombres années de la guerre.Alors que les ports français alternaient,Sanremo restait le point d’arrivée côté italien.Puis, comme cela a souvent lieu, les relationsdevinrent plus difficiles et la Giragliaen fit les frais ; elle connut alors un lentdéclin, également dû à l’évolution duMonde des régates de haute mer. Destemps meilleurs sont revenus grâce auchoix de Saint-Tropez et de Gênes, et surt-out grâce au grand enthousiasme de Rolex.La vieille Dame de la Méditerranée a retrouvéle rôle qu’elle mérite et depuis 12 ansdéjà, sa croissance ne connaît plus de limite.L’excellent accueil du Yacht ClubSanremo, de son dynamique et très compétentprésident, Beppe Zaoli, et du maireMaurizio Zoccarato nous garantira desmoments émouvants et agréables.L’hospitalité du vieux port, même avant ledépart de la nouvelle régate d’approcheSanremo - Saint Tropez est une raison deplus pour ne pas perdre cette grande occasion.Nous vous attendons tous, dans lacertitude de pouvoir vous offrir une semainede mer et d’amusement ! STORIAEra una sera del dicembre 1952 quandoBeppe Croce, presidente dello Yacht ClubItaliano, e René Levainville, Presidentedello Yacht Club de France, seduti al tavolodi un bistrot di Parigi, diedero vita allaregata della Giraglia, una sfida nata quasiper gioco tra Francia e Italia.Da qualche anno le regate d’altomare inMediterraneo, sotto la spinta concordedello Yacht Club Italiano e dello YachtClub de France, con la collaborazione delReal Club nautico de Barcelona, avevanocominciato lentamente a riprendere piededopo la parentesi della guerra.L’idea fu quella di creare qualcosa di analogoalla già notissima regata del Fastnet;una regata, cioè, da compiersi sempresullo stesso percorso, e che fosse abbastanzalontana dalle coste per meritare iltitolo e la qualifica di regata d’altomare.Per oltre cinquant’anni lo Yacht Club Italianoha continuato a organizzarla e da allora finoad oggi la Giraglia si è trasformata in unaclassica del Mediterraneo, una regataappassionante e ricca di fascino, che riescead attirare in uno splendido scenario centinaiadi imbarcazioni tra le più belle edimportanti della vela internazionale.La prima edizione, a cui parteciparono 22barche (tra cui le meravigliose Ea, MirandaIV e Nina V), fu disputata nel luglio del ’53sul percorso Cannes - scoglio della Giraglia- Sanremo. La regata era così concepita: unanno le barche partivano da Cannes perarrivare a Sanremo, l’anno dopo viceversa,partivano dall’Italia per arrivare in Francia.9

Nel corso degli anni il porto di partenza odi arrivo in Francia è cambiato, ma è semprerimasto immutato il numero dellemiglia da percorrere.Da quando Rolex è diventato partner ufficialedella regata, la formula si è evolutaed è cambiata.I regatanti cominciano ad affrontarsi pertre giorni in una serie di regate costiere aSaint Tropez prima di partire per la regatad’altura, corsa sulla rotta Saint Tropez – Iledu Levant - scoglio della Giraglia con arrivoa Genova, sede storica dello YachtClub Italiano. In recent years,with the joint encouragement of the YachtClub Italiano and the Yacht Club de Franceand the collaboration of the Real ClubNautico de Barcelona, offshore racing inthe Mediterranean had slowly begun torevive following the hiatus of the war.The idea was that of creating somethingsimilar to the already well-establishedFastnet Race; that is to say, a race thatwould always be held over the same courseand that would be far enough from thecoast to merit the title and distinction ofbeing an offshore race.For over fifty years the Yacht Club Italianohas continued to organize the event andthe Giraglia has now developed into aMediterranean classic, a thrilling race ofrich appeal that manages to attract withina fabulous setting hundreds of the mostbeautiful and important boats in internationalsailing. The first edition was disputedby 22 boats (including the marvellous Ea,Miranda IV and Nina V) in the July of ’53along a Cannes – Giraglia Rock –Sanremo course. The race was conceivedas follows: one year the boats would setsail from Cannes and arrive in Sanremo,the following year they would depart fromItaly with the finish in France.21
