The two suggested to combinethe regulation gun, issued to policemenwith a great or average length stick,which can served as defensive weapon.This idea raised enthusiasm among thedelegates, which arranged, togheterwith the two maters, a training course forthe police force of Tokio: that’s the waythe keijo-jutsu, the stick art practised bythe police force, was born.The keito-jutsu was teached and practisedfor many centuries by the Japanesewarriors, which were able to kill orknock the opponents out using a simplepiece of wood. L’ideaentusiasmò i delegati che insieme ai duemaestri prepararono un corso d’addestramentoper i poliziotti di Tokio: nacquecosì il keijo-jutsu, ovvero l’arte delbastone usata dalle forze di polizia.Il keijo jutsu fu insegnato e praticato perdiversi secoli dai guerrieri nipponici,che riuscivano con un semplice pezzo dilegno a uccidere o a mettere fuori combattimentodegli avversari meglio armati.Infatti il bastone si presta magnificamentea essere usato in diverse occasioni,dato che può essere lanciato dauna certa distanza e può essere utilizzatoper colpire sia con la punta che conil tronco.Uno dei vantaggi che lo hanno fattodiventare l’arma preferita dagli agentigiapponesi è che in un combattimentourbano un proiettile sparato con un’armada fuoco non può essere controllatowas upset by violent students’ demonstrationsand, daily, groups of opposingfactions facing each other along thestreets, wearing helmets and beingarmed with long bamboo canes withsharp ends: for policemen such a kind ofdemonstration was only an excuse forpracticing the techniques learned duringthe course at the Accademy. One of themost dramatic event happened whensome special police divisions, trained forthe guerrillia, put 2000 armed studentsto flight and many of them remained onthe field!The success of the introduction of thestick into the police force’s equipment ledthe Ministery of Defence to call themaximum experts of kendo, iaido, kenjutsuand goshin-jutsu from all overJapan, in order to arrange a fightingsystem that incorporates a great varietyof techniques. Among these experts,there was also Takaji Shimizu, who hadbeen chief instructor of the police forcefor 42 years, and who became “nationalliving treasure” after his retirement.This special board chose the best partsof every Japanese fighting discipline,karate, judo, ju jitsu, adding the mainstrokes of the Western boxe: so theycreated the taiho-jutsu; a manual for themilitary forces was also published inorder to classify all these effective techniques.An argument supporting this martialart is that it’s revised every threeyears and specialized instructors areasked to replace the old techniques withnew ones in order to enrich the taihojutsu.You all have seen very often in Americanmovies that the police handcuffs the criminalsbefore bringing them to jail; thisisn’t what happens in Japan, where thepolice, even if their equipment providesfor handcuff, prefers to use an antiquemethod, the hojo-jutsu, that is tieing theprisoner (the criminal, we say) up with arope, which has a small diameter. Thismethod was popular among the samurai,which became skilful in this discipline,following particular instructions.Someone might think it’s strange that aso primitive method is still used today bythe police, but in those days of violentdemonstrations all over the city, usingone only rope to stop ten people wasmore convenient than using ten pairs ofhandcuff.The keibo-soho was another difensivemethod, that provides the use of thewooden nightstick for close range fighting.The keibo became part of the regularpolice equipment during theAmerican occupation in 1946. Unodegli episodi più drammatici fu quandoalcuni reparti di agenti addestrati allaguerriglia misero in fuga un corteo di2000 studenti armati, lasciando moltidimostranti sul terreno!Il successo che ebbe l’applicazione delbastone come dotazione delle forze dell’ordinemise ancora in moto il ministerodella Difesa che convocò i più grossiesperti di kendo, iaido, ken-jutsu egoshin-jutsu del Paese, perché preparasseroun sistema di combattimento a maninude che inglobasse una grossa varietàdi tecniche. Fra questi esperti maestri,c’era anche Takaji Shimizu che è statoistruttore capo della polizia per 42 anniprendendo così la carica di “TesoroNazionale Vivente”. Questo specialecomitato selezionò il meglio da tutte lediscipline di combattimento nipponiche,karate, judo, ju jitsu, aggiungendo icolpi principali del pugilato occidentale:fu così creato il taiho-jutsu e venneanche pubblicato un manuale a usodelle forze militari, dove venivano catalogatequeste efficacissime tecniche. Unargomento a favore di quest’arte marzialeè che viene continuamente revisionataogni tre anni e istruttori specializzatisono incaricati di arricchire il taihojutsucon nuove tecniche, eliminandoquelle antiquate.Spesso avrete visto nei telefilm americaniche i malviventi vengono bloccati conmanette prima di essere portati in carcere;questo in Giappone non accade,infatti i poliziotti, pur avendo le manettein dotazione, preferiscono un anticosistema in uso ai tempi dei loro antenati:è lo hojo-jutsu, cioè legare un prigioniero(leggi delinquente nel nostro caso),con un corda di piccolo diametro.Questo metodo era in voga fra i samuraiche seguivano particolari insegnamenti,diventando abili in questa specialità.Ad alcuni può sembrare stranoche un sistema così primitivo possa esseusato attualmente dalla polizia, ma neigiorni in cui violente manifestazioni dilagavanoper la città, era molto più praticobloccare con una corda una decinaSportivo 39
