eighth grade designed their own quiltsquare. The square was representative of“what <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Pius</strong> X has given them” as astudent. The squares were then madeinto a banner and will be displayed in theschool.Primary <strong>St</strong>udent HappeningsOur kindergarten students celebrated Clifford’sbirthday with Kibble Mix snacks, stories andcoloring sheets.First grade students are anxiously awaiting thearrival of their baby chicks. The eggs will bekept in incubators in their rooms until they hatch.The baby chicks will then be donated to a localfarm.Our second grade students collected over 300personal toiletry items (toothpaste, shampoo,etc) for PADS in honor of our 100 th day ofschool. Our goal was to collect 100 items and wesurpassed our goal!The third grade students attended the 2010Agriculture Expo in March at the DuPageCounty Fairgrounds. They learned where all theingredients for pizza come from and were giventhe opportunity to sample a free piece of pizza.This year, our fourth and fifth grade studentswere part of the Poetry Pals program with theIslamic Foundation School in our community.The Poetry Pals program brings children fromdiverse backgrounds together to share theirstories through poetry and art. The studentsvisited each other’s schools, learned about eachother’s faith traditions and wrote poetry. Thisprogram allows all the students to not onlyexpress themselves through their poetry, butstrengthens their self-esteem and respect forothers.war at the junior high level and collected sparechange. They raised a total of $1,700 dollarswhich will be donated to the <strong>Catholic</strong> ReliefServices. In addition, the students sold Hope forHaiti wristbands and donated the profits as well.Prior to the Christmas break, the junior highacademic advisory groups held a door decoratingcontest. Visit our website and look under<strong>St</strong>udents>Door Decorating Contest to see theirartistic results.Currently, we have twenty-one 6th, 7th and 8thgraders competing in the <strong>St</strong>ock Market Game.Our students are competing with other schoolsand teams from Northern Illinois. We have 7active teams out of about 300 in our area.<strong>St</strong>udent teams are given $100,000 to invest instocks of their choice and they do all theirresearch and trading online. This is anafterschool activity and the students are learninga lot about buying and trading stocks that theyknow. As of February 25th, we had 3 teams thatwere in 7th, 11th and 14th place out of the 300teams.Our congratulations to the following students fortheir outstanding efforts:Jack Jessen, fourth grade, won a trophy for the“Nationals” wrestling tournament in Oklahoma.Junior High HappeningsOur junior high students raised money for thevictims of the earthquake in Haiti. The studentteams with their academic advisors held a pennyDara Durdic, seventh grade, was awarded thehonor of School Spelling Bee Champion at <strong>St</strong>.<strong>Pius</strong> X. She advanced to the DuPage CountyPrivate and Parochial School Spelling Bee heldon February 3 and attended the Spelling BeeFinal for DuPage County.
