critiche a vari linguaggi artistici.
In Gades (film
L’elaborazione
di un concetto filmico. La libertà di intervenire
al margine. L’intertestualità culturale. L’identità. La
polisemia del cinema. Sono aspetti sempre presenti nei
lavori di Pere Portabella.
Estetica politica o politica estetica?
immagini bruciate, i chiaroscuri, smontano uno a uno i
codici proibiti menzionati in precedenza.
artistico a quello politico.
96
dance along with establishing the importance of the Andalusian
culture in the creation of a Catalan identity.
Vampir Cuadecuc (1970) mixes into this horizon as a critical
interpretation of the cinematic language through the codes
of the supernatural terror genre. Portabella takes advantage of
the spectator’s prior knowledge of the character and story of
Dracula and shows how (physical and emotional) effects are
created behind the lens. He shows us the set, the make-up,
actors preparing for a scene, the artificially created spiderwebs.
And Christopher Lee removing his eyeballs. The literary
codes of the legendary final moment of the story are also
included in the film: Dracula’s death. Christopher Lee, sitting
in his dressing room with a copy of Bram Stoker’s book in
hand, reads the four lines (twice) on the vampire’s death.
Language stripped bare. The fiction behind the camera. The
elaboration of a cinematic concept. The freedom to intervene at
the margins. Cultural inter-textuality. Identity. The polysemy
of cinema. These are elements that are always present in Pere
Portabella’s films.
Political aesthetic or aesthetic politics?
A film like Umbracle (1972) allows one to consider another
key aspect of Portabella’s filmography: the ideological component
of the concept.
After the disconcerting stroll of Christopher Lee (the man in
the crowd? the fallen angel? Lucifer? the stranger?) through a
zoological museum and the streets of Barcelona, three intellectuals
(Romà Gubern, Joan-Enric Lahosa and Miguel Bilbatúa)
speak before the camera on the inconsistencies of the code of
Francoist censorship, which prohibits showing on the screen
that which the regime considers immoral (swearing, adultery,
patriotic sacrilege, nudity, violence, animal cruelty). The
film’s course, the scenes of daily life, the music, repetition,
sound, the burnt images, the chiaroscuros, dismantle the
aforementioned prohibited codes one by one.
The socio-political factor has been present in Portabella’s films
from the very start. Progressively, however, his critical reflections
shifted the focus from the artistic to the political. This
course, the cinematic exaltation of the ideological component is
accompanied, conversely, by a progressive distancing of the part
of the poet Brossa, who belongs to another generation, which
denies understanding what is happening on the streets. Portabella
and Santos became interested in the political component of
society. At the time, the director’s belonging to the Grup de Treball
was fundamental. The idea of the group, founded on a militant
concept of Catalan culture, was to face the dictatorship’s
latest, agonizing blows by making art. The fight implies the
desire to interpret historical facts through an exchange of
visions in terms of the mechanisms of representation.
A clear example of political radicalization is a film such as El
sopar (1974), in which five former political prisoners reunite in
a country house, for dinner and to discuss the significance of
their experience (confinement as disassociation of the subject, the
revolution as something ethical). In fact, this historical moment
seems crucial in Catalonia: many feel that the imminent end of
the dictatorship and the institution of a democratic society are
opening new possibilities that will allow a true (and free) Catalan
identity to flourish once more.
On the cinematic level, Portabella’s films are a consistent attack
on the real and the generation of the concept, beginning with the
elimination of the argument. Linear, Aristotelian narration,
IMR, and cause-effect logic are systematically shattered.
