l’editoriale dell’”Osservatore Romano” critica duramente
percorso. Rifiuta l’ingranaggio in modo volontario, deliberato
istigatore, cinefilo. Il terzo viandante per strade sconosciute
è Carles Santos, musicista, artista, militante. L’unione
brano brillante.
94
municated). The Francoist leaders, subjected to the directives
from the Catholic Church, made some decisive internal
changes (i.e., removing the Minister of Information and the
Director General of Cinema), tightened censorship and
declared Buñuel a persona non grata.
And this is precisely why this episode interests us: the socalled
“affaire Viridiana” marginalized Portabella from the
field of film production.
In 1964, Portabella went to Rome to write, together with
Francesco Rosi, the screenplay for The Moment of Truth
(1964), a film he later called “unbearable.” He also worked on
the editing and the adaptation of the dialogue in the Rizzoli Studio,
at the same time that Fellini was shooting Juliet of the
Spirits (1965) next door. For Portabella, the experience in Rome
represented “a move towards the craftsmanship of cinema.”
But is it possible to create without restrictions in such a foul
and repressive cultural context? Is it possible for cinema to
make you feel a little freer? At this point, Portabella began
questioning the nature of cinema and the true (disastrous)
conditions of artistic creation in the dictatorship. “I wanted to
start from the beginning, to question my ideas on this medium.
I began a process of reflection on the practice of cinema. I
sought out collaborators who had distanced themselves and
were not deformed by the problems of cinema, in order to move
forward in the search for an ethical cinematic language culturally
rooted in our reality, which was capable of reflecting
our current situations and allowed for the constant transformation
of the language and the new expressive needs.”
Obviously, this approach was far too different from the servile
and submissive cinema demanded by the regime. Thus, Portabella
answered his own question, saying it was possible for
cinema to be a path of freedom. He chose to exclude himself
from the system. He admitted that the only space possible for
free artistic creation resided at the margins of this path. He
voluntarily, deliberately and resolutely rejected the cogwheel
in order to be able to create without interference from the dictatorship
or industry. None of Portabella’s film followed the
normal procedures of production, distribution and circulation,
for a clear and simple reason: He didn’t want them to. He felt
much more drawn to the extra-territorial space, to an underground,
non-opportunistic environment; to a cinema dreamt
up and created outside the system.
In the 1960s, Joan Brossa – a poet, artist, instigator and film
lover – was also walking through this ethereal fluctuating
space beyond the border. The third wanderer of unknown
streets was Carles Santos, a musician, artist and militant.
Besides films, the Brossa-Santos-Portabella union produced a
unique series of cultural events, such as the 1967 Concert
irregular per a pianista i cantatriu (Irregular concert for
pianist and singer):The pianist raises two fake hands, takes
them off and places them on the piano. He sits down and starts
playing “handlessly,” gesticulating as if playing a brilliant
piece of music.
Critical elaboration of the concept
In Pere Portabella’s films, everything that converges in a scene
(image, sound, codes, semantics, extra-cinematic connotations,
social context, the spectator’s private world) unites to
create an unequivocal concept. In all of his work, the dissonance
between sound and image can be seen as an important
factor in the process of elaborating the concept. A dissonance
that is in harmony with Eisenstein’s manifesto of sound, and
