Pere Portabella
Una passeggiata sul ponte
(o come il cinema ti rende libero)
di Iris Martín-Peralta
“Per arribar a llocs desconeguts
cal fer-ho també per camins desconeguts”
“Per arrivare a luoghi sconosciuti,
bisogna farlo per percorsi
anch’essi sconosciuti”
Pere Portabella
Cinema: traduzione ottica di un’idea. Terreno di sperimentazione.
Un tema. Un concetto. Un pezzo di quotidianità. Dissonanza
audio-visiva. Eliminazione dell’argomento. Dialettica
tra manifestazioni culturali. Decostruzione del
linguaggio. Inversione di codici. Smascheramento di
miti. Ricerca costante di uno spettatore critico. E l’oppressione
soltanto in esilio o in clandestinità.
In quel periodo
A Walk on the Bridge
(Or How Cinema Sets You Free)
by Iris Martín-Peralta
“Per arribar a llocs desconeguts
cal fer-ho també per camins desconeguts”
“To arrive in unknown places,
you must take paths
themselves unknown”
Pere Portabella
Cinema: The optical translation of an idea. A terrain of experimentation.
A theme. A concept. A moment of everyday life. Audiovisual
dissonance. The elimination of the argument. The dialectics
between cultural manifestations. The deconstruction of language.
The inversion of codes. The unmasking of myths. The
constant search for a critical spectator. And the oppression of
a dictatorship; of a Francoism with a repressive and declining
film policy that accepted only apologetic products at the service
of the powers that be, of the Catholic religion and the
Spanish homeland. A context in which the existence of a Catalan
culture (whose language, institutions and symbols were
prohibited) was possible only in exile or secrecy.
Pere Portabella walks through this landscape like the unsettling
character of Umbracle walks the streets of Barcelona:
calmly clinging to his own conscience. His objective is to
arrive in unknown places, based on his principle that only
unknown paths lead to unknown places. Cinema’s duty is to
exercise free choice.
From the “Viridiana scandal” to the margins of the path
The initial relationship between Portabella and cinema was
characterized by his (turbulent) experience as a producer and
head of his production company, Films 59. Portabella’s idea
was to create “a group capable of recovering an aesthetic sense
in cinema that conformed to a critical position for the medium.”
Two constants already appeared in Portabella’s films of
that period: the preoccupation with showing a concrete reality,
from the moment it was deformed by Francoism, and the
notion of cinema as a cultural manifestation that must reflect
upon its language.
With enormous difficulty, and stretching censorship to its limits,
Films 59 produced three films: Los golfos by Carlos Saura
(1959), El cochecito by Marco Ferreri (1960) and Viridiana
(1961) by Luis Buñuel, an episode that merits a separate discourse
because it is a clear example of the oppressive mechanisms
employed by the country’s leaders.
At Portabella’s urging, Buñuel agreed to come back from Mexico
and film once again in Spain, starting with the screenplay
of “a very white story” (as he called it) that later became the
disturbing Viridiana. The film won a Palme d’Or at Cannes.
The next day, the editorial page of the Osservatore Romano
harshly criticized the Spanish regime for having tolerated a
“sacrilegious film” of such huge proportions (and simultaneously
asked that all those who worked on the film be ex-com-
