“realizzazione negativa”.
88
sound, which can be offered in a space that is not that of the
frame but, rather, off camera. The integral soundtrack.
That which happens off camera intervenes in the image. The fact
that any of these elements – be it the dialogue, music or sound –
can be eliminated to make more room for the others, does not
impede the viewing of the film, but constitutes a significant
absence: it is a “negative realization.” If the characters speak in
a film, but you don’t hear what they say, the film is not lacking
dialogue; it maintains the meaningful absence of the dialogue.
It makes no sense to try and dismantle the structure of the cinematic
medium starting from the idea that cinema has constraints
and that, in a peremptory way, in a story’s development, an
argumentative line counts more than other options. In cinema,
the institutional forms of production, distribution and projection
are fundamentally based on the classic rule of the 19th century
novel, Víctor Hugo, Balzac, and so forth. Sequences are articulated
in a succession of “cause and effects” and story closures, a
rule that becomes dogma due to audiences’ needs and so the film
industry can be competitive on the market.
And to render a culture competitive, we must assume that it is
so from an industrial point of view. This concept for the most
part eliminated creators’ roles from debates within European politics,
bringing to the center of attention those of the cultural
entrepreneurs (Hollywood). When facing globalization issues,
we receive only economic responses.
For Malraux, culture is above and at the margins of the market.
For Jack Lang, that which is good for the economy is good for culture.
From a politics of creation we have passed to cultural ventures.
To this we add the role of public opinion for which every
policy directed at creators ends up being perceived as state-controlled
and interventionist. Consequently, governmental policies
in matters of culture are mainly based on strengthening the
industrial work of culture, on defending identity, the consolidation
of the language, the preservation of the symbolic and popular
and architectonic patrimony, relegating to creation an almost
peripheral role. After all, emphasis has fallen on supporting the
results, whereas we should try and invest money in the process.
Today, however, the process is the result. We are more for culture
as spectacle, leaving less room for culture as knowledge.
It is obvious that the Europe of the Union, the cultural and existing
Europe, is the product of its diversity and not its cultural
specificity and that the phenomenon of globalness tends to
homogenize culture, with the objective of transforming it into a
product that incorporates market sensibilities to the maximum.
The audiovisual and film sector is the best-fertilized and most
fertile territory. The effects of this dynamic of the market of cultural
product/goods create great confusion. It is not a question
of, as many want to present it, the triumph of free choice, but the
victory of a system of distribution of functions: certain companies
consume, others produce. Obviously, that which is
decreased is not consumption but creation. And the worst thing
is not the homogenization of the product, but the standardization
of its production process. This is more perverse.
Literary editorials
A system of solid structures and a great capacity and availability
to assimilate that which can be decisively processed and sold
at the moment one leaves behind on a dead-end path all that
which is not part of the sophisticated mechanisms of assimilation
and rejection.
The creative factor is limited to needs and market stimuli. And
to stimulate them, there is nothing better than the endless net-
