diverse.
percepisce come allontanamento dall’immaginario-simbolico,
avanguardia estetica e politica presente nelle mie proposte,
filmica e l’attività politica, tre percorsi inscindibili.
Realism’s place in Spanish cinema
by Pere Portabella
I am not an expert on any one thing because I navigate through
multi-disciplinary territories. My place of residence is a space
with doors and windows open to mixtures and contaminations,
and my collaborators come from diverse backgrounds. In my
work, the only role I exclude is that of the common screenwriter,
whose job consists of being rigid with respect to the requested
norm of always making the same film. For me, cinema was never
separate from the other arts. I began searching for a cinematic,
ethical and culturally grounded language, leaving the path
open to constant change and new expressive necessities.
The vast repertory of nuances surrounding the term “realism”
illuminates the fragile path through which one tries at times to
subject or adapt it to the cyclical events of the historical moment,
when the sensation of authenticity, filtered by the cinematic
image, is perceived as pulling away from the symbolic imagination,
that is, the more realistic and real. The “tendency” of cinema
to appropriate reality and confuse itself with it is accentuated,
but we must consider the various purposes. There exist
fringes of realism that strategically utilize cinema with different
content and objectives.
In1960 and 1961, together with Carlos Saura, Marco Ferreri
and Luis Buñuel, I had to take part in the debate on film realism
with Los Golfos, El Cochecito and Viridiana. When I began
working as a producer, I already had in mind what criteria would
have guided me in making my films. And I truly think I have
contributed with another variation of realism. Up until 1970,
my incompatibility with any form of film “opportunism,” the
result of the strong connection between the avant-garde, aesthetics
and politics in my work, got me into legal trouble and marginalized
me.
On the occasion of the publication of Historias sin argumento,
immediately following the screening of my films at MACBA,
Santos Zunzunegui placed me on the map as an extra-territorial
filmmaker in opposition to realism/non-realism. I perceived
this as a good thing because I have always been at the margins.
Which does not mean being marginal, but at the crossroads
between the artistic avant-garde, the practice of film and political
activism, three inseparable paths. Pilar Parcerisas, referring
to my meeting Brossa and Santos, claimed that the progress of
the languages of art and poetic sensibilities owes much to
encounters among disciplines, to the randomness of human
encounters and the desire to have a new perspective on reality.
Thus, it is easy to assume that cinema is not my only universe.
That cinema is a means of storytelling that is as unusual and
unexpected as it is efficient is resoundingly evident – the big studios
are proof of that. In the very beginning, the first images of
the workers exiting the factory or the arrival of the train in Paris,
cinema left audiences perplexed and fascinated by such an astonishing
experience. Since then, however, never has a spectator
confused what is on the screen with reality, because he or she
knows that what is happening is not actually happening. The
spectator moves within the semantic field of cinema. At times is
seems that this obvious fact, or where it comes from, is often forgotten
or ignored when we hear statements like, for instance,
that cinema is the mirror or reflection of reality as it is.
Cinema appeared in a historical moment of great revolutionary,
