Il film racconta per quadri la vita e le imprese di José María
Gatica, il più famoso pugile argentino del dopoguerra. Nel
1940, Gatica e il Ruso sono due amici, due ragazzini che
vivono di espedienti nelle strade dei quartieri popolari di
Buenos Aires. Il Ruso vuole diventare pugile ma ben presto
rinuncerà, mentre Gatica inizia la rapida ascesa e
diventa immediatamente professionista, vincendo il campionato
“guantes de oro” nel 1945, mentre la popolazione
riempie le strade per chiedere a gran voce la liberazione
del Colonnello Perón. Nel 1946 Gatica è ormai un famoso
e vincente pugile che frequenta i locali alla moda e, sempre
accompagnato dal Ruso, si dà alla bella vita. Conosce una
giovane soubrette, Ema, se ne innamora e la sposa. Dal
1946 al 1948, Gatica vince numerosi combattimenti e finalmente
arriva il giorno della rivincita contro l’avversario
che lo aveva sconfitto in modo scorretto, il Rosarino. Al
match assistono anche Perón e Evita. Il combattimento,
all’ultimo sangue vede vincere Gatica ai punti e, nel tripudio
della folla che incita al campione, Perón si avvicina e
gli stringe la mano. La fama crescente di Gatica lo porta a
New York come sfidante del campione Ike Williams. Ma
Gatica non si allena e si dà alla bella vita. Williams lo mette
k.o. al primo round. Al ritorno in Argentina inizia la lenta
parabola discendente del campione.

The film recounts the life and times of José María Gatica, the
most famous post-war boxer in Argentina. In 1940, Gatica and
“the Ruso” are two kids living by their wits in the streets of a
working class neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Ruso wants to
become a boxer but gives up almost immediately, while Gatica
rises rapidly and immediately turns professional, winning the
“Guantes de oro” championship in 1945 as the people take to the
streets, calling for the liberation of Colonel Perón. By 1946, Gatica
was a famous and victorious boxer who frequented fashionable
bars and lived the high life, always accompanied by Ruso.
He met the young soubrette Ema in the theatre, fell in love and
married her. From 1946-48, Gatica won numerous fights and
finally the day of a rematch arrived against an opponent who had
beat him unfairly, Rosarino. Even Perón and Evita came to the
match. Gatica won the fight to the death on points and, as the
crowd rejoiced, Perón shook Gatica’s hand. Gatica’s growing
fame took him to New York to challenge champion Ike Williams.
However, Gatica refused to train and instead enjoyed the city’s
nightlife and women. Williams knocked him out in the first
round and, upon returning to Argentina, the champion’s slow
but steady decline began.
“Gatica didn’t make me happy, but it’s a wonderful film. Each
shot, each frame, was a nightmare for me. I wasted a lot, truly a
lot, of film. Almost 60,000 meters. But I know that I managed to
get what I wanted.”
