JUAN MOREIRA
Mandato ingiustamente
Inseguito
dalle forze dell’ordine è costretto a muoversi continuamente
e a trovare nascondigli nelle pampas.
After the opening scene of the funeral of Juan Moreira, a famous
gaucho bandit of the 19th century, a long flashback begins that
recounts the story. Wrongly imprisoned, upon his release Moreira
seeks out the merchant who betrayed him and kills him.
Thus begins his life as an outlaw: Moreira is hunted by the law
and forced to constantly search for new hideouts in the Pampas.
One evening, completely drunk, he ferociously fights and kills a
man. Only later does he find out that the man he knifed was an
important national politician. The bandit is approached by several
members of the murdered politician’s opposition: in
exchange for their protection, and with the promise that the
charges against him will be dropped, Moreira will have to work
for the other faction as an assassin, eliminating their various
enemies as they arise. The gaucho accepts and commits a long
and bloody series of crimes. However, the long-awaited pardon
never comes and Moreira, realizing he has been duped, contacts
the other political side and begins working for them.
“Juan Moreira by Leonardo Favio is probably the best Argentinean
film after a film that Favio made five years ago. The film
is an accurate portrait of the times, a summary of the fight for
domination in those days of the wild west, seen through the
archetypal story of a gaucho who becomes bad through apparently
through no fault of his own. His fate is not in his hands.
Even during moments of apparent victory, Moreira is always on
the verge of losing and propagates the very violence and injustice
against which he rebelled.”
