hoy he llorado.
In
Come
come attore.
work in politics. I repeat: there is no greater work of art than trying
to attain happiness, the improvement of your fellow men.
My daily insomnia/ persists in its misery/ to remind me of something
else/that which I was./ The boy who ran through some
fields/ who certainly no longer kisses the moon./ You were not yet
born and I already envied you,/ like all boys./ Diego, in the silent
photo/ I keep in my room/ where without protection/ you lean on
my chest,/ I saw your sorrow, of a child with no escape./ We can
guess at the gruffness/ in your tender gaze./ A constellation of
multitudes/ surrounded you from the beginning./ Now you will
have no oblivion/ now you will have no rest./ Until there will be
a planet/ in which a child breathes,/ there will be a child who
dreams of being Diego/ and repeating the impossible goals/ of
music and birds /Diego,/ I cannot help you,/ I cried today.
Cinema
We went to the movies every day. It was the era of cinema clubs.
At that time, going to the cinema was your duty. How could you
miss a film by Bergman, Truffaut, Godard? When you liked a
movie, you saw it twenty times. I must have seen Los inundados
(Flooded Out) by [Fernando] Birri fifteen times. I’d go to
the first show, see the film, go out, get a coffee, go back in and see
it again. I analyzed it so much that I knew all the scenes by heart.
Luckily, they didn’t make me pay, because Birri, who knew me,
was always at the door.
Cinema 2
I was living with María Vaner, who was an actress and once, to
impress her, I told her that the only thing that was important to
me was making films, as a director and not as an actor. In the
end, I think that all the spelling errors aren’t noticed when filming.
However, since we were living together, I was obliged to
back up that lie. In the morning, I would get up early and go to
a bar to get a latte, but I would tell her that I was studying film
with Torre Nilsson. One day, I had to ask Babsy to be an accomplice
to the whole story, and I begged him to cover my lie in case
he met Marilyn [María Vaner’s nickname]. Actually, I really
would have liked to direct, but I though I wasn’t capable. I
thought it would be very complex, until I took the camera, made
El amigo and told myself: This is neither easy nor difficult, it
just is. It must arise and develop spontaneously, it’s like the
alternation of the systoles and diastole.
Black and white and color
I never imagine films in black or white or color, because they’re
like thoughts. You can’t see your thoughts in color. You don’t
think of color unless you intentionally think of color. If I ask you
