Paula ha 24 anni e vorrebbe fare l’attrice, ma se non trova
il denaro necessario per l’affitto, dovrà vivere per strada
abbandonando i suoi sogni di gloria. Ha poco tempo a disposizione
per trovare i soldi e non sa come rimediarli o a
chi chiederli. Disperata, Paula pensa seriamente di prostituirsi,
tuttavia anche questa soluzione temporanea non è
così facile da attuare. Intrappolata nella profonda crisi economica
argentina, Paula è l’emblema di una generazione e
classe sociale che deve essere pronta a qualsiasi espediente
per sopravvivere.
“L’idea è sorta all’improvviso, una notte dell’anno 2000.
Una somma di avvenimenti che mi colpirono, generarono
in me la necessità di andare all’estero per una settimana, in
Uruguay, a scrivere da solo. Fu come un’epifania, non mi
era mai successo di scrivere dieci pagine al giorno. (...) È
come un mockumentary in cui si ricrea la realtà, filmata
come se fosse osservata dagli occhi di qualcuno. Non si
ricerca un’interpretazione, né un messaggio. E neanche si
vogliono giudicare i personaggi: si mostrano per quello
che sono nell’affrontare le circostanze che circondano il
personaggio di Paula (Antonella Costa)”.

Biografia
Nato in Argentina nel 1968, Alejandro Chomski ha studiato
cinema al FEMIS a Parigi e presso l’American Film Institute,
California. Il suo primo cortometraggio è del 1992,
Wrinkles. L’anno seguente dirige un altro corto, Escape to
the Other Side, tratto da un racconto di Adolfo Bioy Casares.
Prima di tornare in patria e cominciare a lavorare al
suo primo lungometraggio Hoy y mañana, ha diretto altri
otto cortometraggi. Il suo prossimo film sarà realizzato da
un adattamento di un racconto di Paul Auster, “The
Country of Last Things”.

Paula is 24 and wants to become an actress but, not having any
rent money, may soon be out on the streets, giving up her dreams
of glory. She has little time to come up with the money, but she
doesn’t know how to get it or whom to ask. Desperate, Paula seriously
considers turning to prostitution, even though this temporary
solution is not an easy one. Trapped in Argentina’s profound
economic crisis, Paula is the symbol of a generation and social
class that must be prepared to resort to anything to survive.
“The idea came about all of a sudden, one night in 2000. A series
of events that struck me created in me the need to go abroad for
a week, to Uruguay, and write by myself. It was like an
epiphany, I’d never written ten pages a day before. (...) It’s like a
mockumentary in which reality is recreated, filmed as if it were
begin observed by someone. You don’t search for a performance,
or a message. And you don’t want to judge the characters:
they’re shown for what they are in facing the circumstances surrounding
the character of Paula (Antonella Costa).”

Biography
Born in Argentina in 1968, Alejandro Chomski studied cinema
at FEMIS in Paris and at the American Film Institute in California.
He made his first short, Wrinkles in 1992, before going
to make another, Escape to the Other Side, adapted from a story
by Adolfo Bioy Casares. He further directed eight short films
before returning to his country to begin work on his first feature,
Today and Tomorrow. His next film is an adaptation of the
Paul Auster novel The Country of Last Things, based on a
script written together with the author himself.
