Eppure, a partire
premi e ottenendo numerosi riconoscimenti.
Martel, Adrian Caetano, Bruno Stagnaro, Daniel Burman,
cinema argentino contemporaneo all’interno di pochi
schemi critici delimitanti e ripetitivi (come l’iperrealismo,
produzioni a bassissimo budget).
monolitico e unitario come potrebbe sembrare a prima
vista.
eccezione, come vedremo), spinge i giovanissimi registi
A country of a thousand visions
by Daniele Dottorini
Argentinean cinema is problematic, above all from a critical
point of view. More than ten years after the explosion of a new
generation of directors, what seemed to be a cinematic trend of
definite and shared traits was instead revealed to be a dynamic
and variegated wave. From comedies to documentaries, from
more personal and minimal stories to animation: in recent
years Argentinean cinema has developed a broad and wellcrafted
industry, united perhaps by a renewal of forms, an
urgency in its stories, and a desire to create films that break
from previous generations.
In many cases, this new generation has had to literally start
from scratch: from lowered or almost non-existent budgets,
self-produced films, and places and spaces that are emerging for
the first time within a cinema that in the 1980s struggled to
find its way, its own identity. Nevertheless, in the mid-1990s,
a new generation of very young filmmakers rapidly emerged,
and made room for itself at international events, winning
prizes and numerous accolades.
Today, the names (to mention but a few) of PabloTrapero,
Lucrecia Martel, Adrian Caetano, Bruno Stagnaro, Daniel
Burman and Martin Rejtman are known internationally and
Argentinean cinema is now a constant presence at competitions
and festivals. This is an obvious sign of success and
rebirth, naturally positive factors that nevertheless present a
risk in congealing contemporary Argentinean cinema within a
few limiting and repetitive critical models (such as hyper-realism,
expressive minimalism, the everyday nature of the stories
and ultra low-budget productions).
Argentinean cinema, let it be repeated, is actually not as monolithic
and unified as it may initially seem. On the contrary, it
is precisely the lack of a direct connection with the past, the
absence of a generation that can be a point of reference for the
present (with a few exceptions, as we shall see), that has driven
the young directors of the current decade to invent an entirely
open path attentive to the contemporaneity of Latin America
while simultaneously absorbing places, rhythms and images
from the most disparate types of cinema, western and otherwise,
as well as from the forms and rhythms of television.
Pesaro’s retrospective this year is dedicated precisely to recognizing
this existence of new creative energies that, especially as
of 2000 (i.e., after the success of the first wave of Argentinean
directors: Trapero, Martel, Alonso, Burman), are reaching
towards new trends and expressive forms that once again make
Argentinean cinema (in film and video, shorts and features, fiction
and documentaries) fertile grounds for experimentation.
This selection is therefore aimed at offering an overview of the
evolution of these trends, to restore a mobile and eloquent portrait
of this country of multiple visions.
As previously mentioned, there are various forms that intersect
within the most recent panorama of Argentinean cinema: first
and foremost, the recurring and obsessive idea of a reconstructing
memory and restoring to it its sense of perspective.
Memory made up, above all, of lost bodies, figures and people
whose stories must be recreated, figures who traversed Argentinean
history, embodying time and again its wounds and joy,
pain and exaltation. And this is the direction that films like Yo
no sé qué me han hecho tus ojos, and the two films on Diego
Armando Maradona (Maradona, vida… and Amando a
