VIDEO DALL’ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI URBINO 202 VIDEO DALL’ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI DI URBINO a cura di Roberto Vecchiarelli e Pierpaolo Loffreda RGB OUT Elaborazione video di una video-installazione sonora: Sherlock Holmes occhioXocchio: schermi, labirinti, sguardi “Questo lavoro nasce dalla collaborazione del Corso di Storia dello Spettacolo dell’Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino con il LEMS e la Facoltà di Lingue e Letterature Straniere dell’Università di Urbino. Un ‘collettivo’ che si è mosso con l’obiettivo di realizzare un intrattenimento nella forma di installazione video-sonora per una Giornata di Studi dal titolo ‘Sherlock Holmes nel Paese dei Media’ organizzata dalla Facoltà di Lingue. Sherlock Holmes è un soggetto particolarmente trattato da diversi media e, in particolare, dal cinema. Giocando su alcuni meccanismi e citazioni cinematografiche abbiamo creato, con la tecnica del found footage, una serie di ripetizioni, frammenti, sintassi sbriciolate, eccedenze, producendo un flusso di avvenimenti e una rete di relazioni del tutto effimere. Porte, finestre, finestrini, buchi della serratura, aperture, diventano metafore dello schermo. Assassini, vittime, investigatori, presunti colpevoli, future vittime, morti, personaggi apparentemente estranei agli accadimenti, sono gli uni per gli altri come spettacoli da osservare al di là di uno schermo. Le immagini, invece di concatenarsi secondo una logica narrativa mostrano luoghi, spazi e figure di un possibile racconto. Si gioca sulla mancanza come apertura di senso. Il risultato è un eccesso di sguardi inteso come ‘possibilità’ di vedere e non sulla visione come discorso compiuto, strutturato, finito. I raddoppiamenti, il disordine, i ritorni fanno vacillare il senso e l’eccesso di sguardo diventa delirio, astrazione, smarrimento, sguardo nel vuoto che tende a richiudersi su se stesso. Gli schermi di varia natura che si aprono all’’occhio interminabile’ dei personaggi, sono resi come meccanismi ancor più vacillanti dal movimento incessante di personaggi in fuga, dal morto che vede scorrere il proprio funerale (la famosa sequenza di Vampiro di C. T. Dreyer) e dal treno che corre. Il movimento incessante crea un senso di perdita. Lo sguardo si perde. Il viaggio in treno viene vissuto come ‘sparo’ attraverso il territorio: ‘poco importa – dice Ruskin – se avete occhi per vedere ... quello che, nel migliore dei casi, potete apprendere ... è la superficie in generale’. La meccanicizzazione dello sguardo mette fine al libero rapporto tra le cose e lo sguardo. Il nuovo modello percettivo più innaturale e meno libero impoverisce la funzione della vista. La quantità, la diversità, la velocità delle cose che l’occhio è costretto a registrare affaticano il cervello. Prima ancora che qualcosa si possa cogliere già c’è altro da vedere. E il cervello compie un lavoro eccessivo. La ‘contrazione dello spazio’ permette alle cose, che compaiono in rapida successione, di dissolversi privandole della loro esistenza contemplativa. Il nuovo sguardo sarà capace di ‘registrare indistinto ciò che “This work is the result of the collaboration between the History of Film and Video Course of the Urbino Fine Arts Academy and LEMS (Electronic Laboratory of Experimental Music – G. Rossini Music Conservatory) and the Department of Foreign Language and Literature of the University of Urbino. The ‘collective’ worked to make an entertaining piece in the form of a sonorous video installation for a Study Day organized by the Department of Languages entitled ‘Sherlock Holmes in the land of the media.’ Sherlock Holmes is a subject that has been dealt with frequently by diverse media, especially cinema. Playing on several mechanisms and film citations, we created a series of repetitions, fragments, disjointed syntax and excesses through the technique of found footage, producing a flow of events and a network of wholly ephemeral relations. Doors, windows, keyholes and openings become metaphors for the screen. Assassins, victims, investigators, the presumed guilty, future victims, the dead and characters apparently extraneous to the events are like spectacles for one another to observe beyond a screen. Instead of connecting to one another through a narrative logic, the images show places, spaces and figures of a possible story. We played with absence as an opening of sense. The final result is an excess of gazes intended as a ‘possibility’ of seeing and not on vision as a complete, structured and concluded discourse. Duplication, disorder and repetition cause sense to vacillate and the excessive perspectives become delirium, abstraction, a gaze into the void that tends to fold in upon itself. The various screens that open to the ‘endless eye’ of the characters are rendered as even more vacillating mechanisms by the incessant movements of fleeing characters, from the dead person who sees his own funeral (the famous sequence from Carl Dreyer’s Vampire) and the moving train. Perpetual movement creates a sense of loss. The gaze is lost. The moving train is seen as ‘shot’ through the territory: ‘It matters little,’ said Ruskin, ‘if you have eyes for seeing…that which you can learn, in the best of circumstances...is generally the surface.’ The mechanization of the gaze puts an end to the relationship between things and perspective. The new, more unnatural and less free perceptive model impairs the function of sight. Quantity, diversity, the speed of things that the eye is forced to register tire out the brain. Before anything can be grasped there is already something else to see. And the brain takes on an excessive workload. The ‘contraction of space’ allows things that appear in rapid succession to dissolve, depriving them of their contemplative existence. The new vision will be capable of ‘indistinctly registering that which is distinct’ to arrive at a ‘panoramization,’ at dissolution and loss of depth. Thus, we have a Sherlock lost in the modernization of the gaze and duplicated and triplicated by inquiring and lost gazes. 42 a Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema

Avremo così uno Sherlock smarrito dalla modernizzazione dello sguardo e duplicato e triplicato da sguardi indagatori e smarriti. Dallo sguardo verso il finestrino del treno a quello che va a portarsi sullo schermo televisivo il salto è breve. Tante e veloci sono le immagini e le informazioni che captiamo dallo schermo-finestrino del treno e l’effetto, molto più amplificato, è che la vista sul mondo ha le stesse qualità ‘panoramiche’ già sottolineate e che conducono verso la perdita della consapevolezza. Risalgono infatti a quell’anno i primi disegni che tracciano le fisionomie dei degenti del manicomio e dei detenuti del carcere. Una sorta di ‘bestiario’ che documenta deformità e caratteri. Sherlock non ebbe “relazioni” con il criminologo italiano, ma sicuramente A.C. Doyle ne conosceva gli studi come si può dedurre in ‘The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone’”. There are many fast images and the information that we gather from the screen/train window and the highly amplified effect is that the perspective on the world has the same aforementioned ‘panoramic’ qualities and leads towards the loss of awareness. Sherlock’s gaze will risk being lost and indistinctly register that which is distinct.
