Il regista Kim riceve un’inattesa telefonata dal cugino Ilkyu,
che lo avverte che presto sua madre incontrerà suo
padre, dopo che nella guerra di Corea i due si erano separati.
Kim si reca nel paese natale in Corea alla ricerca della
casa del padre. Durante il viaggio incontra una donna che
in seguito rivedrà nello stesso paese. Lei è alla ricerca della
sorella minore scomparsa tanti anni prima. Stile rigoroso,
ritmo lento, lunghi silenzi e atmosfera algida, per ottenere
momenti di puro lirismo e riflettere sul cinema, sull’amore,
sulla divisione del Paese e sulla memoria e le ferite
più recondite di ciascun essere umano.
“Questo film può essere letto come il ritratto di un regista
che sta lottando per realizzare un film indipendente a
Pusan. Tuttavia Time Between Dog and Wolf non si riduce
solo a questo. Il protagonista visita la sua città natale controvoglia,
un luogo del quale si è sempre disinteressato e
dove il segno del tempo è come inciso. In quella strana città
incontra una donna che per un breve momento eccita la
sua fantasia e che poi scompare lasciandolo solo. Questo
lavoro mette in dubbio la ragione del film stesso, raffigurando
il confine tra il tempo storico - che ha provocato una
ferita collettiva - e il tempo privato, dove regna il desiderio
sessuale”.

Biografia
Jeon Soo-il è nato a Sokcho in Corea del Sud nel 1959. Ha studiato
cinema e teatro all’università di Kyungsung a Pusan,
dove adesso insegna. Dopo la laurea, è andato a Parigi per
continuare gli studi di cinema all’E.S.R.A e all’università.

Kim, a director, receives an unexpected phone call from his
cousin, Il-kyu, who tells him his mother will soon meet his father,
after having been separated from each other during the Korean
War. Kim returns to his birthplace in search of his father. During
the trip, he meets a woman he will later see again in his
hometown. She is searching for her younger sister, who disappeared
years earlier. The film’s rigorous style, slow rhythm, long
silences and cold atmosphere work to obtain moments of pure
lyricism and offer a reflection on cinema, love, the division of the
country, memory and the deepest wounds of each human being.
“This film can be read as a portrait of a director who has been
struggling to make independent films in Pusan. However, in
Time Between Dog and Wolf he is not satisfied. The protagonist
unwillingly visits his hometown, where the historical time
in which he has never been interested is inscribed. There, he
meets a woman who excites him for a little while and then disappears
in the strange town, leaving him alone. This work questions
the reasons of cinema itself, again depicting the line
between historical time, which gave birth to the collectives
wounds, and private time, where sexual desire rules.”

Biography
Jeon Soo-il was born in Sokcho, South Korea, in 1959. He studied
film and theatre at the University of Kyungsung in Pusan,
where he currently teaches. After graduating, he went to Paris to
continue his studies, at the E.S.R.A. and at university.
