DOCUMENTANDO “Per Simmel nei paesaggi di Böcklin la rovina è innalzata alla sovratemporalità: nella vita nervosa delle frasi e delle sentenze di Sgalambro, similmente, la catastrofe è oggetto di contemplazione. Tema principale dei suoi scritti (a partire da “La morte del sole”, 1982), il tema par excellence, è quello del collasso termico del sistema solare (finis mundi mediante morte termica): non nel senso di un qualcosa di indefinitamente lontano, da toccare l’uomo talmente poco, quanto l’esserci inautentico heideggeriano toccato dalla morte stessa (per il quale si muore, certamente lo sa, ma intanto non c’è da preoccuparsene). Il fatto che la fine del nostro sistema sia accompagnato dall’acquisizione di una consapevolezza scientifica determina una certa ineludibilità: questa fine del mondo ci è affatto prossima, ne sappiamo abbastanza, per Sgalambro noi stessi siamo suoi contemporanei. Non una parusia, né una società senza classi, ma la distruzione fisica mediante la morte termica dell’intero sistema da noi abitato. Distruzione innanzi la quale è possibile, del resto, stringersi in attesa: come comunità di disperati, di autentici contemporanei di questa fine, in un legame che si può dire comunistico (dove Marx viene letto sempre assieme a Schopenhauer). E dove chiaramente la contemplazione è preferita all’azione, in chiara controtendenza agli orientamenti del presente. Evidentemente segno caratteristico del tempo attuale, la volontà di praxis (mania dell’esecuzione) è inoltre la condizione di possibilità dell’istituzione della società come idolo: che poi a sua volta sarebbe da venerare, da servire – idolo per il quale il filosofo deve tenere il più alto disinteresse possibile (si veda il volume di Sgalambro del 1994). La filosofia, in caso contrario, diventa semplicemente (o addirittura) materia scolastica, elemento in balia della mediocre ed ecumenica rassicurazione innescata dall’apparato burocratico-universitario, fino a cadere nella tradizionale deiezione della ripetizione che tutto rende innocuo (l’esempio noto del canto notturno che si fa cantilena, anzi canzoncina). La filosofia del resto non può mai accontentarsi dell’essere “segno di apertura di dibattiti”: la filosofia deve lasciare senza domande né obiezioni, deve tutto esaurire (scrive Sgalambro: “la filosofia non insegna, ordina”). Nella continua affermazione della superiorità (basso continuo dell’opera di Sgalambro) della dimensione teoretica su quella pratica è affermata allora anche la durezza della conoscenza: che preferisce la fermezza alla viaticità”. The main theme of his writing (beginning with 1982’s La morte del sole), the theme par excellence, is the thermal collapse of the solar system (the end of the world through thermal death): not in the sense of something indefinably distant that will barely affect man, but as something that is inauthentic and Heideggerian, touched by death itself (for which we die, this is plainly known, but in the meantime there is no need to worry). The fact that the end of our system is accompanied by the attainment of scientific awareness determines a certain nonescapability: this end of the world is actually at hand, we know enough about it, for Sgalambro we ourselves are his contemporaries. Not a Second Coming, nor a classless society, but physical destruction through the thermal death of the entire system in which we live. A destruction for which we can furthermore brace ourselves: like a community of desperate people, of true contemporaries of this end, in a bond that can be called Communist (where Marx is always read together with Schopenhauer). And where action is clearly preferable to contemplation, and naturally goes against present trends. Obviously a characteristic sign of the times, the desire for praxis (execution mania) is moreover the condition of the possibility of the institution of society as idol: which in turn could be venerated and served – an idol in which the philosopher must be as disinterested as possible (see Sgalambro’s 1994 volume). Philosophy, in contrast, becomes simply (or even) a school subject, an element at the mercy of the mediocre and ecumenical reassurance triggered by the bureaucratic-university mechanism, until it falls into the traditional dejection of the repetition that everything renders innocuous (the noted example of the nighttime song that becomes a lullaby or, actually, a singsong). Moreover, philosophy can never be content with being “a sign of the opening up of debates” – it must leave one without questions or objections, it must exhaust everything (Sgalambro writes “Philosophy does not teach, it orders”). Questo film racconta la storia della loro relazione difficile, vista con autoironia dalla prospettiva del fratello minore. In una fase successiva del video vedremo Wout scalare il pendio dell’Himalaya con la sua videocamera. Biografia Wout Conijn ha studiato economia e filosofia. Dopo aver finito gli studi, ha attraversato per otto mesi l’Asia in bicicletta. È stato operatore per il film Airplane diretto da suo fratello, l’artista Joost Conijn. Una collaborazione proseguita con Wooden Car.
