a spiegare. Sento un rumore o forse un suono, lontano.
Scendo ancora, nei piani bassi della memoria. Mi ritrovo a
rabbia, casualità, rigore, paura, errori, rischiare, capire,
ricominciare.
altri specchi. Allora svegliarsi in piena notte e poter scegliere.
qualcosa a qualcuno. Io penso che la cosa più importante –
almeno per me – è che parlino a me stesso, che mi diano
qualche chiave di quello che sta succedendo”.
The Way of the Ant
by Andrea Caccia
I open the drawer and this book is inside… a bunch of
poems…that I’ve read a hundred times…that I’ve never read
through to the end… and that I’ve perhaps never really understood.
It’s Beckett. I go down and I throw myself on the sofa, I
turn on the television, annoyed, but there’s no way to resist. I get
up and sweat, a sweat I’ve never sweat before. The sultriness is
in my thoughts. The anxiety of having to tell stories. Through
words that contrast the sign with a sound that they can never
explain. I hear a noise or perhaps a faraway sound. I go down
again, to the lower levels of memory. I find myself staring at the
wind among the ears of wheat behind the house, the bright light
on the wall of the fireflies, some photographs, scratched by a dry
paintbrush. Songs and water on my shoes… The beginning of a
movement that is my work today. Hard work, dedication, sleepless
nights and a continuous search for something: time, money,
ideas, stories, silence, myself…
Through the magnifying glass of the camera lens, the world
flows before my eyes, miniscule, elusive and violent. The ultimate
sense of things is indefinable, the “why” of men, the steps
to take and choices to make. So where do I begin? Perhaps from
love: an empty space, a “frame” to fill with colors, sounds,
words, noises, continuously changing figures. From hearing:
even the smallest of movements, the breathing that moves the
frame, that impresses upon it. From the game: impossible to
renounce, difficult not to carry with you, a weapon that transforms
exertion into joy, surrender into conquest.
Then there are confrontation, curiosity, anger, change, rigor,
fear, mistakes, risks, understanding, beginning again. Knowing
that time is given only when it is beyond the palimpsest, when it
has no limits, when it is not money, when it knows it can be
itself. Being ourselves. What does it mean to be like no one/everyone,
lost in the midst of a multitude of gazes, of mirrors that
reflect other mirrors. Then waking up in the middle of the night
and being able to choose. Looking out the window, for a whole
hour, emptying time of the anxiety to produce, waiting for something
or someone to arrive, a sign, a dialogue, a shadow that
shows us the state of things, a possible sense of our existence.
Knowing it might never arrive, but not leaving. Recording the
first heartbeat, seeing someone laugh, a tear that slides away forever.
“Editing” cinema and life in a single, terminal, unpredictable
sequence. Filming reality to give shape to life. Filming
life to give shape to reality.
Sometimes I write too much, sometimes too little, I think there
exist a number of words for saying things, like a correct number
of frames for showing them. This is the entire vocabulary I am
capable of. On paper.
“Everyone thinks that, in general, films strive to say something
to someone. I think the most important thing, at least for me, is
that they speak to me, that they give me a key to that which is
happening.”
