NUOVE PROPOSTE VIDEO & DOCUMENTANDO
Introduzione allo spaziovideo
all’interno dello “spaziovideo” e a ogni edizione si è tentato
festival italiani, in particolare quelli dedicati specificamente
a questi formati.
umilmente, attraverso l’incontro diretto dell’autore,
Introduction to the spaziovideo
by Andrea di Mario
With respect to the festival as a whole, Nuove Proposte Video is
a small section attentive to the phenomenon of video production.
It brings together a selection of the numerous submissions the
festival receives each year and, in a sense, completes the festival’s
traditional focus on new languages.
In recent years, there have been many titles programmed in
spaziovideo and we have tried, with every edition of the festival,
to strike a balance, to find a direction and new words for defining
this work, in order to be able to move from the moment of discovery
towards analytical completion, contextually placing some of
these works as they deserve to be placed. However, it so happens
that each edition is a toss of the dice and all minimum guarantees
are swept aside by new plots, solutions and approaches to the shot
and manipulated material. Other Italian festivals, especially
those specifically dedicated to these formats, also demonstrate this
constitutionally “weak” character with respect to the “grammar”
of the set, the absence of a programmed aesthetic action. Everything
seems to converge in a shared agglomerate – a short film
background, the new documentary approach, videos with musical
accompaniment – resulting in a unique chaotic deflagration.
This continuous, accidental fluctuation, which is thus all the
more fertile, originated from the absence of a structure capable of
giving a more certain and visible form to this typology: the all too
scarce number of production and distribution circuits and, even
more so, the indifference of broadcasters, especially thematic ones
(which should represent the appointed place of fruition); the subsequent
recognizability between common languages and themes
that can be assimilated with traditional cinema and the more
known forms of experimentation; the elitist disinterest of certain
fields of study and the anomie of the artists themselves, monads
struggling with an elaboration that is not very socially recognized
or remunerated. The “undecidability” of those who find
themselves commenting on video finds a useful viaticum in the
work of Andrea Caccia and Antonello Matarazzo, on whom we
have chosen to focus this year. Even they, on highly different
planes, show us that the art of a video and/or short product rests
upon its mixture, the point of support of this norm-less language.
Thus, this is where the work within spaziovideo begins, humbly,
through the direct encounter with the artist, at least in defining
his identity. The attentive festivalgoer will recognize those
artists returning to the Pesaro Film Festival to show new works
and, through their presence, attest to the state of their artistic
path; in vitro exams, like the small theatre hosting them. And he
or she will also recognize that, as in the majority of the Italian
videos (L’altra vita, La terra quadrata, Vita di Vito), the
motion sequences, luminous flashes of nighttime material, and
citations of other video equipment in use have (magically) disappeared.
Also due to the abundant use of close-ups – a purely
external and statistical consideration – the portrait’s approach
shows in its simplicity a choice of field that implies a precise
communicativeness and greater sobriety in terms of adulating
facile effects. Portraits of marginalized characters, an indication
