Basato sulle memorie di un accademico inglese a proposito
dell’inseguire e dell’essere inseguiti, Unrequieted Love è
un film saggio su cinema e assenza (una storia raccontata
senza controcampi), su Hitchcock e Antonioni, su cinema
e città. Una storia di aspettative, illusioni, panico e paura
della violenza.
“È d’aiuto sapere che io sono uno scrittore e un romanziere
commerciale, indipendentemente dal fatto di essere un
filmmaker indipendente. Proprio perché scrivo mi sono
allontanato dal cinema convenzionale, dal quale ero partito
venticinque anni fa. Questo è stato possibile con lo sviluppo
delle tecnologie che mi hanno permesso di fare il
mio cinema personale e di lavorare fuori dal sistema produttivo
vigente, non secondo i modi usuali precostituiti
ma creando uno spazio per l’esplorazione, come accade
con la scrittura che è un processo di scoperta. È importante
che nel cinema vi siano ancora luoghi inesplorati. L’argomento
di un film e il modo in cui lo realizzo sono la stessa
cosa: il soggetto detta lo stile. Mi piacciono i film che esibiscono
un processo. (...) Unrequited Love è un film intimo
sulla rabbia, che presiede il sentimento del nostro tempo;
sulla fede e la religione; sulla tirannia e la liberazione della
tecnologia; sull’illusione della civilizzazione; e forse
anche sulla vita emozionante delle città”.

Biografia
Il filmmaker inglese Chris Petit (1949), oltre all’attività di
regista televisivo e cinematografico, di film di finzione,
documentari e di opere sperimentali, è anche uno scrittore
di thriller e racconti, saggista e critico. Tra i suoi lavori sperimentali
ricordiamo Negative Space, un saggio sul leggendario
pittore americano Manny Farber, e i film che scaturiscono
dalla sua collaborazione con Iain Sinclair come The
Falconer (1997), Asylum (2000) e London Orbital (2002).

Based on an English academic’s memoir on stalking and being
stalked, Unrequited Love is a film essay on cinema and absence
(a story told without reverse angles), on Hitchcock and Antonioni,
on cinema and cities. A story of waiting, self-delusion,
panic and fear of violence.
“It helps to know that I am a writer and commercial novelist
independent of being a filmmaker. Because of writing, I have
moved away from conventional filmmaking, where I started out
over 25 years ago. This has been possible with technical developments
that let me do my own filming, and work outside normal
production systems, not in the usual premeditated way but by
creating space for exploration, as with writing, which is a
process of discovery. It’s important that there is still a place for
filmmaking without maps. What a film is about and how I do it
are the same: subject dictates style. I like films that show a
process. (...) Unrequited Love is a quiet film about rage, that
presiding emotion of our age; about belief and religion; about the
tyranny and liberation of technology; about the illusion of civilization;
and, perhaps, also about the emotional life of cities.”

Biography
UK filmmaker Chris Petit (1949) besides working as a television
and film director (of features, documentaries and experimental
works), he is also a writer of thrillers and short stories, as well as
an essayist and critic. His experimental works include Negative
Space, an essay on the legendary US painter Manny Farber, as
well as films that came about from his collaborations with Iain
Sinclair, such as The Falconer (1997), Asylum (2000) and London
Orbital (2002).
