ZA 05. The old and the new
(t.l.: ZA 05. Il vecchio e il nuovo)
Un collage didattico e collettivo nel quale si confrontano le
sequenze dei film della fondazione del Nuovo Cinema
Latinoamericano e le tesi degli studenti della EICTV in
questi primi vent’anni di vita.
“Definirei la mia opera una ricerca. Un cercare più che una
ricerca. Un cercare delle risposte a tante domande che porto
dentro, come tutti, domande che la realtà esterna mi
pone. Un cercare che non è mai un momento fine a se stesso,
ma semmai in funzione di un permanente ritornare a
chiedersi e a chiederci delle cose alle quali altre opere
dovranno dare risposta. Non mi considero né un regista,
né un attore, per essere sinceri. Direi piuttosto un uomo
che ha un’insoddisfazione profonda di fronte alle cose, che
non riesce ad accettare questo mondo così com’è e che tenta
di capirne certe chiavi, certe leggi, certi principi, che vorrebbe
forse in un qualche modo contribuire a ristabilire un
equilibrio che in fondo c’è ma che abbiamo perso e che non
siamo stati capaci di conservare e soprattutto di portare
avanti, di sviluppare in termini più armonici”.

Biografia
Fernando Birri è nato a Santa Fe nel 1925. Regista e teorico
cinematografico, disegnatore, pittore e poeta. È il pioniere di
una cinematografia popolare, nazionale e critica che segna
gli inizi del nuovo cinema argentino. Impegnato in varie
istituzioni culturali e cinematografiche, ha fondato e diretto,
tra gli altri, la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión di
San Antonio de los Baños a Cuba e la Fondazione del Nuevo
Cine Latinoamericano. Ha pubblicato numerosi libri e le
sue opere pittoriche sono state esposte in tutto il mondo.

A collective and education collage that brings together sequences
of the films from the Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano Foundation
and theses of the students of the EICTV in those first twenty
years of activity.
"I would call my work research. Or, rather, a search. A search for
the answers to the many questions I have inside, like everyone
else, that external reality presents me with. A search that is never
only a moment unto itself, but a function of a constant going
back and asking yourself, asking ourselves, things for which other
works should provide answers. I do not consider myself a
director, or an actor, to be honest. Instead, I would say I am a
man who is profoundly dissatisfied with things, who cannot
accept this world as it is and tries to understand certain of its
keys, laws, principles, who would perhaps like in some way to
contribute to re-establishing a balance that ultimately exists but
that we’ve lost, that we were unable to preserve and, above all,
push forward and develop in more harmonious terms."

Biography
Fernando Birri (Santa Fe, 1925) is a film director and theoretician,
designer, painter and poet. He was the pioneer of a popular,
national and critical cinema that marked the beginning of new
Argentinean cinema. He has worked for various cultural and
cinematic institutions and he founded and directed, among others,
the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión di San Antonio
de los Baños in Cuba and the Fondazione del Nuevo Cine
Latinoamericano. He has published numerous books and his
paintings have been exhibited throughout the world.
