LÀ-BAS
Down There
– quasi paralizzante e veramente ripugnante. Avevo paura
A short stay in an apartment in Tel Aviv, not far from the sea. Is
normal life possible here? Are images possible here? A film without
the slightest intention, except to be without intention, so
that something can become visible or possibly happen.
“I have never desired to make a film in Israel. Xavier Carniaux,
who produces most of my documentaries, suggested it to me one
day. My immediate feeling was that it was a bad idea, even an
impossible idea – almost paralyzing and downright repulsive. I was
afraid my subjectivity was an obstacle, dangerous, and confused on
this subject. There is no neutrality, it could only be feigned.”
Chantal Akerman
Biography
Born in Brussels in 1950, Chantal Akerman’s first film was the
1968 short Saute ma ville. Eight years later, she made her first
feature film, Je tu il elle, in which she also starred. Since then,
her work has ranged from feature films to shorts, to documentaries
and videos, in a disorderly artistic path that has also
allowed her to foray into contemporary art (she successfully
exhibited her artwork at the Venice Biennale in 2001 and at Documenta
in 2002).
