Abe uno scrittore socio-politico diventato autore di libri
commerciali, vive da solo in un alloggio del ceto medio
basso a Diliman, centro degli accademici e artisti di Manila.
Ha tratto vantaggio dal suo nuovo impegno, tuttavia è
confuso e insoddisfatto. Abe guarda fuori dalla finestra e
nota per caso un uomo seduto sul tetto di una costruzione.
Osservare quell’uomo diventa un’ossessione.
“La scelta di Abe di rimanere isolato è il suo modo di proteggere
se stesso dalla confusione e dai problemi del mondo.
I crimini della società e la corruzione del governo sono
alcuni dei fattori che hanno spinto Abe a rifugiarsi in un
angolo e ad allontanarsi dalla società. Ci sono molti scrittori
che desiderano realizzare lavori significativi ma che poi
sono costretti ad abbandonare la loro arte per dare da mangiare
alla loro famiglia e per comprare i beni di prima necessità.
Attraverso la figura di Abe, il film tenta di mostrare la
condizione degli artisti filippini. Il film vorrebbe essere parte
di un più grande movimento in grado di rimuovere il
cosiddetto ‘paraocchi’ e dunque in grado di permettere a
tutti di vedere la pura verità chiaramente e accuratamente”.

Biografia
Mes de Guzman è un famoso scrittore, saggista, sceneggiatore
e regista indipendente filippino, nato nel 1971 a
Nueva Vizcaya. I suoi libri hanno ottenuto numerosi premi
in patria. Lavora anche come grafico per libri e poster.
Il cortometraggio Batang Trapo, il primo che ha realizzato
in 35mm, è stato visto in numerosi e prestigiosi festival
internazionali e ha ricevuto l’Ishmael Bernal Award al
Cinemanila International Film Festival.

Abe, a socio-political writer turned romance novelist, lives alone
in lower middle class housing in Diliman, a hub of academics
and artists in Manila. He lives comfortably from his new trade
but is dissatisfied and confused. Abe looks out the window and
chances upon a man sitting on the roof of a building. Watching
this man becomes an obsession for him.
“Abe’s choice to remain in isolation is his way of protecting himself
from the confusion and troubles of the world. A sense of
alienation from his neighbors, social crime, and government corruption–
these are just some of the factors that have pushed into
a corner and have made him withdraw from society. There are
plenty of writers who desire to create meaningful work but are
forced to abandon their art in order to feed their families and buy
the basic necessities. Through Abe, the film is an attempt to show
the plight of Filipino artists. It would like to be part of a greater
movement, one that would like to remove the so-called ‘blinders’
so that we can all see the raw truth clearly and accurately.”

Biography
Mes de Guzman (Nueva Vizcaya, 1971) is a famous Filipino
writer, essayist, screenwriter and independent filmmaker. His
books have received numerous awards in the Philippines. He
also works as a graphic artist of books and posters. His short
film Batang Trapo, the first one he shot in 35mm, was
screened at numerous and prestigious international festivals
and received the Ishmael Bernal Award at the Cinemanila
International Film Festival.
