quanto ciascuno di noi ha un’estetica propria che a volte, però, si interseca con quella altrui in modo molto interessante). Roxlee (lo stallone cinquantenne, il più vecchio del gruppo) e Lav hanno recitato nei miei film. Io ho scritto la musica per Raya Martin (il più giovane, ventunenne) e John Torres. Tutti noi siamo presenti nel primo film di John eccetera eccetera. Ma l’età, ovviamente, è soltanto una delle illusioni. È un caso che siamo filmmaker e che siamo amici: amici del film. È fantastico avere l’opportunità di aiutare chi ne ha bisogno! Non abbiamo molti soldi, ma l’amicizia e il sostegno morale per fortuna non costano nulla. Olaf Möller: Come descriveresti il rapporto tra le sperimentazioni video più commerciali (come Santa Santita, Bikini Open, ecc.) e i lavori come i tuoi, quelli di Lav Diaz, John Torres, ecc.? Voglio dire, non è un caso che abbiamo ignorato questi film nella nostra selezione... Khavn: La differenza principale tra noi e loro è che loro fanno film classici, della vecchia scuola, in un nuovo formato, il digitale. Noi siamo la nuova scuola. Lav gira film epici che i produttori tradizionali non riescono mai a scandagliare. John rappresenta un’altra antitesi al cinema commerciale filippino: gira senza sceneggiatura, è l’unico membro della squadra, non ha budget. Raya ha girato un film muto in bianco e nero, un vero e proprio tabù per questi produttori da strapazzo. Con i miei film, mi piace prendere per il culo tutto il cinema commerciale locale, mentre Rox sferra continui attacchi alle istituzioni con i suoi cartoni animati sui selvaggi. Dunque i nostri obiettivi sono diametralmente opposti. Loro fanno film per guadagnare, e l’anima e la sostanza non rientrano affatto tra le loro priorità. Noi, invece, facciamo i film che vogliamo fare, per esprimere le nostra visione interiore della situazione socio-politica in cui viviamo o per compiacere la nostra musa con una presa di posizione cinematografica responsabile. Se in futuro riusciremo a guadagnare, meglio, ma il nostro motore non è certo il profitto. Puoi chiamarci bastardi poeti naif idealistici. Olaf Möller: I tuoi film, come quelli di Diaz, Torres o Martin stanno suscitando una grande attenzione in Europa, negli Stati Uniti ecc. Come vengono recepiti nelle Filippine? Questa attenzione aiuta in qualche modo? Khavn – La questione dell’attenzione straniera è estremamente delicata, è un’arma a doppio taglio. Da un lato aiuta. Alcuni filippini sono molto orgogliosi del nostro successo fuori casa e lo sostengono con tutti i mezzi. Ma c’è anche una reazione più violenta, dovuta principalmente all’invidia o a quello che chiamiamo la “mentalità del gambero” – trascinare con sé la propria specie, tutto va bene finché siamo tutti nella stessa fossa e nessuno può scappare. I media nazionali locali, basati interamente su Hollywood, sono tutti fatti di attori e celebrità. Ogni tanto ci presentano, ma è un settore davvero marginale. I media locali sono molto pigri, non effettuano nessuna ricerca, nemmeno su Internet. Non hanno la minima idea di cosa succeda al di fuori del loro piccolo mondo. Bisogna imboccarli. Sono pochi quelli che perorano la nostra causa, e purtroppo non sono sufficienti. I giovani sono più illuminati perché sono stati sottoposti a un’insana dieta di mediocrità e compromessi. Sono loro che spasimano per le nostre cose. And does this kind of attention help there in any way? Khavn: Foreign attention is tricky and double-edged. On the one hand, it helps. Some Filipinos are really proud of our success outside the country, and they support it any which way they can. Then there’s also a backlash, mainly due to envy, or what we call "crab mentality" – pulling your own kind down, everything’s cool as long as we’re all in the pits, and no one escapes. The local national media, which is Hollywood-based, is all about celebrities, actors. Every now and then, they feature us, but it’s really a marginalized sector. Also, the local media is very lazy, they don’t do research, even through the net. They don’t have a clue what’s happening outside their little hole. You have to spoon-feed them. There are a few who champion our cause, but unfortunately that’s not enough. The young ones are more enlightened, being fed up with an unhealthy diet of mediocrity and compromise. FILIPINO DIGITAL Sigfreid Barros-Sanchez ANG ANAK NI BROCKA The Son of Brocka (t.l.: Il figlio di Brocka) Ang Anak Ni Brocka è un mockumentary che parla di un gruppo di giornalisti di un’emittente televisiva che indaga su un ragazzo di 20 anni in cerca della sua identità. L’interesse della redazione si concentra sul fatto che il giovane sia o meno il figlio del defunto regista Lino Brocka, il grande cineasta. Questa ricerca porterà i giornalisti nei luoghi dove il regista è cresciuto, ha studiato e lavorato. “Il film scava a fondo nella vita di Lino Brocka, un eroe nazionale. Non parla soltanto delle sue virtù, ma espone anche i suoi vizi perché questa specie di documentario non vuole fare di Brocka un santo o un supereroe così come altri lo vorrebbero dipingere. Il film scoperchia un vaso di pandora a proposito della morte del regista avvenuta in un incidente stradale nel 1991”. It speaks not only of his virtues but of his vices as well, because this pseudo-documentary does not want to make Brocka out to be a saint or superhero, as others want to depict him.
