Voglio
filippino: gira senza sceneggiatura, è l’unico
Noi, invece, facciamo i film
responsabile.
Puoi chiamarci
bastardi poeti naif idealistici.
Olaf Möller: I tuoi film, come quelli di Diaz, Torres o Martin
stanno suscitando una grande attenzione in Europa, negli Stati
Uniti ecc. Come vengono recepiti nelle Filippine? Questa attenzione
aiuta in qualche modo?
Khavn – La questione dell’attenzione straniera è estremamente
reazione più violenta, dovuta principalmente all’invidia o a
I media nazionali locali, basati interamente su Hollywood,
sono tutti fatti di attori e celebrità. Ogni tanto ci presentano,
Whenever one needs help in this area or that, it’s great to have
the opportunity to contribute. We don’t have much money, but
friendship and moral support, fortunately, are free.
Olaf Möller: How would you describe the relationship
between the more commercially calibrated experiments in
video (like Santa Santita, Bikini Open, etc.) and works like
those that you, Lav Diaz, John Torres, etc. make? I mean,
it's no accident that we ignored these films in our selection.
Khavn: The main difference between us and them is that they
are making old-school films, method-wise, in a new format, digital.
We’re the new school. Lav is making these epic movies that
the current crop of mainstream producers can never fathom.
John is another antithesis of commercial Philippine cinema: he
shoots without a script, is mainly a one-man team, has no budget.
Raya made a silent B&W film, a real taboo for these producer
hacks. With my films, I just love to fuck everything recent
local commercial cinema is about. Rox has been attacking the
establishment with his wild-man cartoons since the 80s.
Also, our objectives are totally opposite. They make films to earn
money; soul and substance are at the bottom of their priorities,
while we make films that we want to make, to express our inner
visions of the socio-political situation we are in, to please the
muse with responsible cinematic positions. If it makes money in
the future, well and good, but profit is not what drives us. You
can call us idealistic naïve poet bastards.
Olaf Möller: Your films, like those of Diaz, Torres, or Martin,
are getting a lot of attention in Europe, the States, etc.
What about the Philippines? And does this kind of attention
help there in any way?
Khavn: Foreign attention is tricky and double-edged. On the
one hand, it helps. Some Filipinos are really proud of our success
outside the country, and they support it any which way they can.
Then there’s also a backlash, mainly due to envy, or what we call
"crab mentality" – pulling your own kind down, everything’s
cool as long as we’re all in the pits, and no one escapes.
The local national media, which is Hollywood-based, is all about
celebrities, actors. Every now and then, they feature us, but it’s
really a marginalized sector. Also, the local media is very lazy,
they don’t do research, even through the net. They don’t have a
clue what’s happening outside their little hole. You have to
spoon-feed them. There are a few who champion our cause, but
unfortunately that’s not enough. The young ones are more
enlightened, being fed up with an unhealthy diet of mediocrity
and compromise. They’re the ones who crave our stuff. As our
national hero Rizal said, the youth are our hope.
