Kevin Jerome Everson
CINNAMON
(t.l.: Cannella)
Set in Charlottesville, Virginia, Kevin Jerome Everson’s documentary
focuses on the very original world of drag racing. The
experimental film has two main, African-American characters:
Erin, who works in a bank and races a car, and John, the mechanic.
Erin is always trying to concentrate before the races, John is
always repairing and improving the car. They are surrounded by
family members who express their passion for racing. The documentary
alternates between filmed material and different mediums
and styles.
“My films and artwork are about responding to daily materials,
conditions, tasks and/or gestures of people of African descent.
These materials, systems, tasks and/or gestures are repositioned
through a variety of mediums such as photography, film, sculpture,
art books and paintings. The results usually have a formal
reference to art history and resemble objects or images seen in
working class culture.”
