WHO’S BOZO TEXINO?

Chi è Bozo Texino, il più grande artista dei treni merci? Chi è
l’uomo che ha lasciato la testimonianza di sé sui vagoni americani
tra il Texas e il Kansas? In questo documentario scopriremo
la sua vita, le sue origini, le motivazioni, ma forse la
reale identità di Bozo Texino resterà per sempre un mistero,
come il significato dei simboli criptici dei graffiti che ha disegnato
sui vari treni dove è salito. Un film, tra fiction e non fiction,
per scoprire l’altra America, quella dei segni del passato
che misteriosamente vive ancora nel presente.
“Amo i graffiti. Stavo lavorando a New York nel 1983/84 e
vidi una manifestazione di graffiti che si svolgeva per strada
e mi piacque veramente. Ero in qualche modo coinvolto
nel panorama punk di quegli anni e i graffiti rappresentavano
una parte di tutto il movimento artistico antiautoritario.
Quando da New York tornai a Dallas, vidi un treno con
dei graffiti vecchia scuola, tradizionali, folkloristici, e c’era
un’immagine che ritraeva Bozo Texino, il piccolo cowboy
con un cappello a forma di infinito. I miei occhi furono come
rapiti da quell’immagine che ispirò la mia fantasia”.

Biografia
Bill Daniel è nato nel 1959 in Texas dove ha studiato fotografia
presso l’università di Austin. I suoi documentari
sperimentali combinano poesia e realtà, per un’analisi che
mira a riportare in superficie le cosiddette sottoculture e le
persone che vivono ai margini della società americana. Nei
suoi documentari troviamo postini, ciclisti, ambientalisti
radicali, graffittari e altri ancora. I suoi lavori vanno dal
documentario, al video e all’installazione. Ha cominciato
la sua intensa attività nel 1980 con la fotografia. Dal 2001
lavora con Vanessa Renwick.

Who is Bozo Texino, the greatest artist of cargo trains? Who is
the man who left his mark on US wagons from Texas to Kansas?
In this documentary, we find out about his life, his origins and
motivations yet Bozo Texino’s real identity may remain a mystery
forever, along with the meaning of the cryptic graffiti symbols
he designed on the various trains he rode. A film between
fiction and non-fiction that portrays another America, one full of
signs of the past that mysteriously still exist in the present.
“I love graffiti. And I was working in New York in 83/84 and
saw the graffiti happening on the street there and I really loved
it. I was kind of involved in the punk scene at that time and the
graffiti was part of this whole anti-authoritarian art movement.
When I got back from New York to Dallas, I saw a train with that
old school graffiti on it, traditional, folkloric type of graffiti, and
there was one image there, Bozo Texino, the little cowboy character
with that infinity-shaped hat and it really caught my eye
and inspired my imagination.”

Biography
Bill Daniel was born in 1959 in Texas and studied photography
at the University of Texas at Austin. His experimental documentaries
combine poetry and reality for an analysis aimed at
bringing to the surface so-called subcultures and the people who
live at the margins of US society. In his documentaries we find
bicycle postmen, radical environmentalists, graffiti artists, and
so on. His works range from documentaries to video to installations.
He began his intense activity in 1980 with photography.
He has been working with Vanessa Renwick since 2001.
