Il making of del Dracula di Jesús Franco. Portabella attraverso
la storia del vampiro, senza nulla togliere alle atmosfere
suggestive e inquietanti del racconto di Bram Stoker,
riesce a mescolare, con i parametri dell’arte di avanguardia,
il documentario alla fiction, il cinema sperimentale a
quello di genere, la critica estetica a quella politica.
“Questo lavoro che andate a vedere è stato realizzato
approfittando delle riprese di un film spagnolo. La storia
scelta è questa – Dracula di Jesús Franco – ma poteva essere
un’altra. Noi autori pensiamo poco alla storia così come
i produttori. Il nostro film vuole essere un tentativo di portare
allo scoperto il potere di suggestione dello spettacolo
cinematografico, che è particolarmente nefasto quando
non si prendono in considerazione altre finalità che il lucro
e la dispersione. Il fatto di smascherare il tema equivale
per noi a denunciare un tipo di cinema che consideriamo
artisticamente e umanamente caduco e castrante; e soprattutto
a denunziare la società che, cinicamente, fa di questo
cinema uno strumento per garantire la sua continuità”.

The "making of" of Jesús Franco’s Count Dracula. Through the
story of the vampire and within the parameters of avant-garde
art, Portabella manages to blend documentary and fiction,
experimental and genre cinema, aesthetic and political criticism,
without detracting anything from the suggestive and disturbing
atmospheres in Bram Stoker’s story.
"This work that you’re going to see was made by taking advantage
of the footage of a Spanish film. The story chosen was Dracula
by Jesús Franco, but it could have easily been another. We
filmmakers think little about the story in comparison to those
who create the story itself. Our film strives to unveil the power
of suggestion of the cinematic spectacle, which is particularly
wicked when no other end results are taken into consideration
but profit and widespread distribution. To us, unmasking the
theme is equivalent to denouncing a kind of cinema that we consider
artistically and humanly ephemeral and castrating; and,
above all, denouncing the society that cynically uses this kind of
cinema as an instrument to guarantee its continuity."
