SIGN OFF DESIGN
According to Norman Potter, “every human being is a designer”. Enzo Mari, on the other hand, claims to have become a
good designer because of his artistic education: “I have never separated my two research paths, which have intertwined
and overlapped all my life. The elaboration process is exactly the same”.
We have selected as examples two key figures of the design, as conceived in the twentieth-century. Our age has greatly
increased the possibility of fleeting objects, constantly changing and becoming. A process which started in the Seventies when
a micro-production of sculpture-objects, popular in terms of taste and style, kicked off. Not merely function but also decoration
and graphic sign, expressions of an age. These are things which, although created for a practical use, nowadays belong to
museum collections spread all over the world. Until then, the communication between the two fields – art and industrial
production – had been scarce and, in any case, not systematic (see for example the Bauhaus or the Futurism).
On the one hand, the so-called “Fine Arts”, based on academic sensibilities, and on the other, the “Arts & Crafts”, also called
minor or applied arts, which were deemed too close to the creative impulse and to the craftsmanship to aspire to the status
of real art. The turning point came about when the heavy industry turned into light industry (a field in which the Italians were
forerunners): we are still in the Seventies, it is then that art loses once and for all the status of “uniqueness”, both through
the seriality of the pop image and the minimalist repetition. The multiplied object and the industrial product create shapes
that can be reproduced over and over and thus determine and influence the contemporary taste. The ever-widening art field
has involved and integrated the design in the new expressive categories.
The connection of these two worlds gave raise to interdisciplinary dialogues, which disregard each original identity under the
mark of contamination and crossbreeding. The artist, as the designer, indeed produces heterogeneous particles of imagined
“tomorrows”: they both create objects, start processes, select logos and invent “products” which often anticipate the future.
Yesterday’s difficulty in metabolizing innovations within the society is facilitated today by the dynamism of ebbs and flows,
of infinite inputs incessantly stirring up any corner of the planet, reaching the elites as much as the masses.
Without any more distinction in terms of communicative order. Once the concept of “elitism” and “uniqueness” is removed,
the multiple, the series open up to generations of users more adaptable to changes. The novelty is quickly absorbed.
Yesterday’s supreme visionaries must deal with today’s cannibals. The “hunger for shapes” is taken on by the new brand
patronage and by the companies in order to mix artistic creation and architectonic functionality.
The essence of the mix between visual art and other creative languages crosses its expressive limits and results in a sort of
melting pot. This new and more fluent system also covers the client theme. From patronage to collecting, conceived as
one’s personal passion, we come to an ever closer and previously detected design relationship between the creative mind
and the company: artists and designers study the positioning, interpret a thought, connect the implicit property of a material
to give it shape and style. The mix must be conceived mostly in the atypical use of materials, which simulate tactile
sensations familiar with the sculptural craftsmanship (bronze, wood, marble, ceramic), even though they come from new
polyurethane, plastic and metallic hybrids (fiberglass and carbon). The sculpture-design object then satisfies the need for
shapes: never a fetish, reduced architecture, smooth, iconographic division, virtual symbol of a tridimensional elaboration of
a creative thought which has gained consistency.
The quite interesting challenge, suggested by SLIDEart (the new brand by SLIDE) is to look “off design” for the signs of
transformation and innovation, as if wanting to underline that the mad and highly imaginative desire for utopia and dream
lies outside the production rules and is to be found where you least expect it.
rispetto all’attuale core businness di SLIDE.
Project characteristics
The current interaction between Art, Design and Fashion, within the elaborate SLIDE world, has prompted the creation of
SLIDEart project: an art publisher, innovative in terms of thinking and positioning, born in the industrial context and
developing inside the Art world. Relying on the network of partners belonging to the SLIDE world, SLIDEart seizes the
opportunity to present its new collection all over the world and in the most prestigious venues, exploiting the skills, the
operating and logistic structure which allowed SLIDE to become one of the most established design companies.
SLIDEart philosophy
Designers and artists explore together the potentialities of resins and plastic materials, supported by the experience, the
contacts and the expertise developed by SLIDE in the field. The thinking and the creativity meet the “Italian know-how” in a
new art concept. Project, imagination, communication, material and contemporaneity meet the 3D design, the technology,
the tools and the entrepreneurship, developing and driving the SLIDE world within art. The sculptures are created with
different materials based on the characteristics of the work (polystyrene, wood, fiberglass and composite materials) and will
be produced in a limited series, with certified and numbered pieces (9 copies per model).
Distinguishing feature
SLIDEart presents itself as a travelling art gallery, promoting its artists in the different and most important international art
events and venues. The works will be taken all over the world to reach art lovers and collectors thanks to a container, such
a contemporary container of nomadic art. For the first time, designers and artists will be presented together thus blurring
even more the boundary between Art and Design. The SLIDEart project aims at highlighting a new creative rule with
art-based works easily usable by the “consumer”, who lives in today’s globalized city and resorts to technology as an
essential element of everyday life. Art and design interpret reality; they don’t just individually imitate it.
Goals
Build and communicate the positioning of the SLIDE brand within the field of applied art, also in terms of cultural and
content inputs, by enriching the SLIDE world with messages and values.
Develop experience and problem solving with the resin and plastic materials and with the project, experimenting new
operating processes.
Research and suggest aesthetic, productive and technical innovations (shapes, colors and distinguishing finishes),
which could also be applied to the design serial production.
Introduce into the art world a new and alternative way of doing business, in a different field with respect to the SLIDE
core business.
Implement the SLIDE values on the market and promote the SLIDE brand in new fields.

Marilù Cattaneo nasce a Monza.
I suoi "rifugi"
the age of fifteen, she followed her maternal grand-father (the
architect Maggi, professor at the Academy of fine Arts of Brera) in
his painting studies. From that distant experience, in addition to her
graphics diploma, she drew her knowledge of pictorial techniques
and materials, which she has mastered. After a long experience in
creating jewellery, today she devotes her time to painting and
sculpture. With her works, she revisits the places of memory,
refusing contemporary art styles with the same naivety she used
when she was four and started the “academy”. No wonder that as
a base for her drawings and paintings, she uses fabric smooth to
the touch, and sometimes she inserts tapestry as a material of
memory and affection. Her “shelters”, are the results of lyric purity,
silent and suspended in time, therefore above the threshold of time
and pain of our daily lives.

The strength and the purity of the variable geometrics
of Farhi’s sculptures stand out with wit in the
perfect equilibrium of the “3” squares embracing
and following one another as inextricably as life
itself. The perspective changes but it remains open
from any corner of the work, suggesting that every
imperceptible movement on our side implies
inevitable consequences of the global vision; “even
if the panorama is still”, “Homo faber fortunae
suae”, fate is in our own hands and every invisible
step inevitably changes the present future.
Alessandro Guerriero
Biografia / Biography
Alessandro Guerriero likes to change the rules. He has been doing
it for over thirty years, almost since 1976 when he founded
Alchimia, the group of designers who put their faces and ideas into
the Italian post-avant-garde. If there is a convention to break, a
reality to bend or only a thought to be colored, Guerriero never
backs off. He speaks with his own vocabulary, in which “Romantic”
is the adjective to be placed beside the word “Design”. Guerriero’s
works are everywhere – from Tokyo’s Modern Art Museum to New
York’s Metropolitan Museum – but his kaleidoscopic gaze has
landed also on architecture and design’s less orthodox spaces.
Today Alessandro Guerriero teaches at Milan’s Polytechnic University
and is the President of Naba, Milan’s New Academy of Fine
Arts. For Absolut World he designed the wall at the Colonne di San
Lorenzo and just not to leave anyone in peace he launched the
uomini in astratto.
la continua ripetizione manifesta l’espansione
spaziale all’infinito come il sogno, la speranza, la
volonta’ e il futuro.
My work represent the men’s interior state in
abstract terms. The dichromatic juxtaposition
highlights the contrast between the beauty of order
and the instability, the duality of human beings. The
flat surfaces express the love, the cavity fractures,
the hate and the sadness. The simplicity of the
squared and spherical shapes express men’s
genuine instinct. And the incessant repetition
shows men’s endless spatial expansion as
dreams, hope, will and future.
ricerca plastica applicata all'anatomia umana, già
volta a superare l'antitesi fra figurativo e astratto,
per approdare a un lessico formale universale.
This sculpture, belonging to the Disgiunti cycle,
reflects more closely the research performed by
the sculptor on the abstract transposition of the
human figure and its movements: together with the
San Cristoforo Barghigiano (2009) and the Bianca
Odalisca (2011), this work resumes indeed the
plastic research applied to the human anatomy,
already explored in the past by some great
maestros of the Twentieth-century, aimed at
overcoming the antithesis between figurative and
abstract, in order to come to a universal formal
language.
Bruto Pomodoro
Biografia / Biography
Bruto Pomodoro nasce a Milano nel 1961. Laureato in biologia,
L’artista vive e lavora a Pietrasanta.
Bruto Pomodoro was born in Milan (Italy) in 1961. His artistic
research, strictly abstract, approaches the most hidden aspects of
alive world through an individual “symbolic-narrative” language,
based on a careful study of the chromatic and composing
relations. Among his pictorial cycles we remind the following
works: the Contemplations, the Square’s Praises, the Algenic
Codes and the Separates. These last paintings are directed to
interpret the breaking down of the form of archetype figure according
to the law of thermodynamics. From 2006 Pomodoro
develops his distinctive Archetypes in three-dimensional key,
coming through the use of collages and resins, to the traditional
free-standing sculpture, either in stone or bronze, following a path
coherent to his rich pictorial production, in a well-balance relation
between classicism and modernity. The artist lives and works in
Pietrasanta (Tuscany).
Simbolo dello stesso. La
piega è sbieca a simboleggiare le infinite possibilità
del libro, della parola, delle idee. Così come infinite
elevazione dell´uomo in direzione dell´assoluto.
A “folded sheet” is the first element to creating a
book. It is its symbol. The fold is oblique to symbolizing
the infinite possibilities of the book, of words
and ideas, as infinite are the possibilities of art as an
elevation tool for human beings towards the
absolute. What appears as “uselessness of art” is
actually “useful” to observe a “beyond”. The fissure
on one side permits, maybe, to access this
“beyond”, like a slit open to mystery…
sculture in rame.
estetica e etica. Si avvia così una intensissima attività espositivain
Italia e all´estero.
all´estero.
date back to those years. In 1995 he condensed, his experience of
project in which materials, often salvaged junk, are used in
Soddu’s works and sculptures after they are purified through a
careful process of aesthetic and ethic research. It is the beginning
of an extremely intense exhibition activity (about 350 displays
Descrizione / Description
Spagnulo’s sculptures encompass the Space
through the violent act inflicted by the artist and,
being suspended into the material, produces an
expressive effect of plastic dynamism abstracted
from the shape itself. In Rosa dei venti the intervention
on the material is a breathtaking breaking
down: the geometry is broken not roughly, but
systematically for highlighting the fragility of defined
shapes.
