About <strong>South</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>College</strong>In 16 short years, <strong>South</strong> <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>College</strong> has grown from 1,000 students to an enrollment of more than27,000 and has conferred degrees and certificates to more than 17,000 graduates. STC, one of the fastestgrowing community colleges in the nation, is committed to student learning as the foundation ofstudent success through excellence in teaching and service, faculty and staff empowerment, professionaldevelopment and accountability. The <strong>College</strong> continues to be ranked as one of the top colleges in thenation, including “Community <strong>College</strong> Week” magazine, which ranked STC as third in the nation, out ofmore than 1,100 community colleges, in awarding associates degrees in all disciplines to Hispanic students.STC students can choose from more than 100 degree and certificate program options, including associatedegrees in a variety of liberal art, social science, allied health, math, science, business and technology fieldsof study. The <strong>College</strong> began offering a Bachelor of Applied Technology degree in Technology Managementin fall 2005, and a Bachelor of Applied Technology in Computer and Information Technologies in 2008. STCis one of only three <strong>Texas</strong> community colleges accredited to offer a limited number of bachelor’s degreesand the only community college in <strong>Texas</strong> offering two bachelor’s degrees.Dual enrollment programs with high schools throughout Hidalgo and Starr counties allow eligiblestudents to take college courses while attending high school. Approximately 8,500 high school studentsare taking advantage of the program. STC has developed two intensive programs for academicallygifted high school students interested in pursuing degrees in the medical and engineering fields. TheDual Enrollment Medical Science Academy and the Dual Enrollment Engineering Academy consist ofconcentrated, two-year programs of study and internship opportunities for qualified students to pursuean Associate of Science degree during their junior and senior years in high school.For those students who wish to continue their education beyond the <strong>College</strong>’s offerings, STC hasmore than 60 articulation agreements with colleges and universities across the nation. These includeGeorgetown University, <strong>Texas</strong> Tech University, <strong>Texas</strong> A&M University-<strong>College</strong> Station, The University of<strong>Texas</strong>-Brownsville, The University of <strong>Texas</strong>-Pan American, <strong>Texas</strong> A&M-Kingsville, and <strong>Texas</strong> A&M-CorpusChristi, just to name a few.The Continuing, Professional and Workforce Education Program provides opportunities for lifelonglearners who want to upgrade their skills, change careers, renew licenses and certifications, or seekpersonal enrichment. There is a wide variety of course offerings including online classes. Additionally, thedivision offers customized training to area businesses, industries and the community. Training programsare tailored to a client’s specific needs in terms of content, schedule and location.STC is the fiscal agent and home of the executive offices for the North American Advanced ManufacturingResearch and Education Initiative. The <strong>College</strong> serves as the Regional Institute for Advanced Manufacturinglinked to all the community and technical colleges in the region.
