grandezza dell'opera teatrale vivaldiana.
Orchestra visiva
visto Marconi affrontare temi differenti e materiali diversi - dagli studi-esplorazioniespressioni
strumenti usati nell’improvvisazione musicale dell’artista
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2010 Mostra
Federico Marconi (1974)
riconducibili in ogni caso all’analisi e all’indagine conoscitiva intorno alle dinamiche
(architettonico-progettuale, performance e installazioni, opere plurimateriche)
Ultima
2008 (30 maggio-29 giugno), all’interno della mostra China new vision - Chinese
ideata da Bruno Corà.
Brunetto De Batté, Francesca Mariani, Enrico Formica, Paola Valenti, Germano Beringheli,
2009
Nicolò Paganini Diabolus in musica
La Spezia (16-18 luglio 2009)
Renato Ricco*
Il convegno internazionale Nicolò Paganini Diabolus
in Musica, organizzato dalla Società dei Concerti
della Spezia e dal Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi
Boccherini di Lucca - La Spezia, 16-18 luglio 2009,
Centro d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea; comitato
scientifico: Andrea Barizza, Lorenzo Frassà, Roberto
Illiano, Fulvia Morabito, Luca Sala, Massimiliano Sala
varietà, tracciando allo stesso tempo nuove possibili
composizione, esecuzione e interpretazione, dove
1-5) edite presso Ricordi:
quanto osservato dall’inviato dell’Allgemeine
come attestato in alcune lettere dello stesso
Paganini.
Campagnoli.
Presentando nuovo materiale documentario e iconografico,
sinora poco studiate come Nicola De Giovanni,
definire scuola violinistica ligure.
Sivori diventa quasi l’ufficiale esecutore pubblico
contenuti, Tatiana Berford, Diane Tisdall e Philippe
Paganini e Giovanni Battista Viotti, che già anni or
Giornovichi. Una peculiarità dello stile viottiano, di
fondamentale importanza per il recupero fattone da
Paganini, consiste nella maggiore cantabilità, o meglio,
nel predominio - esemplificato nella formula
violon chanteur versus violon virtuose - dell’elemento
Kreutzer, Pierre Rode e Pierre Baillot. Attraverso
come l’orchestrazione originale prevedesse
Rispetto
no, cioè il quarto grado innalzato, e tale inclusione
(terza eccedente) e inesplorati orizzonti armonici.
luogo spiegato come all’intervallo di tritono - chiamato
appunto diabolus in musica - siano sempre stati
bruna e riccia (4) . Per rimanere all’ambito letterario,
l’identificazione del violino come strumento del
diavolo è palese anche nella novella hoffmanniana
Rat Krespel.
palese in Paganini in gran misura (5) .
cruciale sui violinisti e, probabilmente in misura anche
maggiore, sui pianisti presenti nella capitale (6) :
Fryderyk Chopin, Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt, ma
anche altri virtuosi quali John Field, Friederich Kalkbrenner,
Johann Peter Pixis, Ignaz Moscheles, Ferdinand
Hiller, Sigmund Thalberg e Stephen Heller.
quali alcune articolazioni fraseologiche e vari schemi
ritmici risultano variati.
prima a volte soffocata, meramente poetica. Rilevando
poi come l’aggettivo poetico fosse accostato da
Schumann solo a personalità degne della massima
ammirazione (come Bach, Schubert, Hoffmann e
trascrizione/ricreazione pianistica mira esattamente
aspetto dell’arte paganiniana, quello trascendentale e
ricca documentazione, l’ambiente musicale genovese
violino e tutto quel mondo musicale autenticamente
Bellini e Gaetano Donizetti. Emerge così tutta la
coerenza dell’arte compositiva paganiniana, che, pur
avvicinandosi indubbiamente allo stile melodrammatico,
rimane sempre e comunque di squisita e pura
natura strumentale.
in sede analitica e di prassi strumentale, a quella
produzione paganiniana cameristica a torto ritenuta
a Camillo Sivori.
25
26
suonò diverse volte in duo.
Katski, Henryk Wieniawski e Izydor Lotto. Inoltre
tecnica trascendentale nelle sue opere violinistiche.
d’ascendenza viottiana abbiano influenzato, praticamente,
dell’aristocrazia; come attestato dalle vicende biografiche
In
proposito, alcune testimonianze coeve sembrano
confermare questa ipotesi. In pieno spirito romantico,
allievo Andreas Moser (8) , parla dell’esecuzione paganiniana
compositore isolato e ineguagliabile fenomeno meteoritico
melodiche si imitano utilizzando qualche tipo di contrappunto;
Paganini’s Virtuosity and Improvisatory Style
Paganini’s improvisatory style fascinated his listeners because they
had the impression that the original creative process was unfolding
before their eyes and ears. Improvisation most closely reflects the Romantic
ideal of creation born out of the moment. Such instantaneous
translation of the creative impulse into a coherent piece of music requires
thorough musical grounding and a high degree of instrumental
skill that is commonly called virtuosity. In defining (or re-defining)
the laws of virtuosity and in illustrating their application in his Twenty-Four
Caprices op. 1, Paganini provided the Artisti with a tool that
would give them access to artistic freedom. The Caprices elicited an
enthusiastic response and became a sort of textbook of virtuosity for
the rest of the 19th C. Striving for freedom marked the social, political
and artistic movements of the time. Beyond their divergences,
the French revolutionaries, the Risorgimento heroes and the young
Romantics shared the ideal of Liberté. Thus, Paganini’s fundamental
intuition about virtuosity - an aspect of musical language particularly
suited to conveying the ideas of liberty and emancipation of the self
- had a resonance in the emerging sensitiveness of the era. In this
study special attention is given to the respective and distinct notions
of virtuosity, improvisatory style, and improvisation. The antinomy of
philological reading and improvisatory style in interpreting the music
of Nicolò Paganini is discussed. The source material under scrutiny
and supporting documents include Bartolomeo Campagnoli’s L’art
(1790), Francesco Galeazzi’s Del Suonare all’improvviso (1796),
Carl Guhr’s Ueber Paganini’s Kunst, die Violine zu Spielen (1829), as
well as relevant passages from Hugo’s preface to the Eastern Lyrics
(1829) and Balzac’s La Comédie Humaine (1830-1856).
Harmonic Patterns and Melodic Paraphrases in 18th
Century Portuguese Guitar Music
Three early-eighteenth-century codices of music in tablature for the
five-course guitar (viola) are about all that remains from the Portuguese
repertory for that instrument up to the publication of Manuel
da Paixão Ribeiro’s book in 1789. The absence of Portuguese printed
books for the guitar before that date should not be taken as evidence
of an absence of a local tradition. Rather, these manuscript sources
provide a rare glimpse on local practices of guitar playing, improvising
and paraphrasing, sometimes bordering a gray area between written
and unwritten traditions. This paper will analyze some examples of
such practices, namely the use of harmonic patterns probably originated
in Portugal (rojão, chácara, magana, sarau), and local paraphrases
of foreign melodies (Mantuana, Aimable Vainqueur, Marizapalos), attempting
at identifying what is imported and what is local in terms of
styles and techniques of variation, improvisation, ornamentation and
improvised accompaniment in the Portuguese guitar repertory.
Inoltre, all’interno del recitativo,
all’improvvisazione: Giovan Mario Crescimbeni, nel Libro VII prosa V
musica.
The Single-Action Harp: The Unwritten Score
The historical evidence and the extent musical scores for the singleaction
harp appear to tell two different and opposing stories about
harp playing from 1750-1830. The majority of harp music of this time
looks simple to us nowadays, but if historical performance practice
and cultural context are considered, it would seem that harpists continued
to improvise on a bass line as well as melodically, in a similar
way to their 17th century counterparts, even though the written score
becomes more important through the 19th century. Many keyboard
players began to play the newly developed pedal harp and the repertoire
for both instruments was interchangeable. This would imply that
as the practise of composing in real-time over a bass line (basso continuo)
was still a fundamental part of a keyboard player’s education, it
was also part of a harpist’s training. Evidence is found in harp scores
where basso continuo figuration is printed near the bass staff. Melodic
ornamentation is often included in the initial chapters of harp
method books. This shows that the apparently elementary scores
were actually elaborated upon, similar to the examples found in these
books. Another example of improvisation is the plethora of examples
of Preludes used for introducing a new key, modulating, ensuring that
the harp was in tune and as musical introductions to Sonatas. The
music published in Paris from 1770 onwards includes many examples
of the compositional form: the Theme and Variations. A culturally important
form, it was especially suited to the musical salons and could
be used as a way to show off the technical ingenuity of a performer.
Casimir Baecker was one of the most renowned harpists for improvising
and some of his compositions were published. Considering the
large amount of harp composer-performers, one could propose that
each player would have invented their own improvised variations on
the well-known themes of the time. As an artistic researcher, I try to
experiment with all these forms of improvisation in my historically
informed performances.
Improvvisazione e ornamenzatione nell’opera francese
Ora queste variazioni pubblicate
contengono spesso artefatti: alcune di esse sono state ritoccate
in modo a volte significativo in vista dell’esecuzione in concerto, poi
incarnava l’interprete sulla scena all’origine.
si avvicini all’attività d’improvvisazione.
Si procederà quindi all’analisi musicale e testuale
fornendo alcune considerazioni generali sulle raccolte
canzone ‘d’autore’ napoletana e spesso impropriamente attribuita a
Donizetti.
Cadenza Improvisation in Solo Piano Music According
to Czerny, Liszt and their Contemporaries
It is well known that an instrumentalist during the eighteenth century
could be expected to provide his own embellishments of fermatas in
composed pieces of music. The continuation of this practice into the
nineteenth century is, however, an issue that has not, hitherto, received
enough attention. Carl Czerny, writing in 1829, gives a description
of “cadenza” improvisation in his «Systematische Anleitung zum
Fantasieren auf dem Pianoforte». The paper will take Czerny’s views
on this topic as its point of departure. His ideas will be examined in
the light of writings by other musical authorities in his time. Czerny’s
instructions on this subject will, moreover, be related to the piano
compositions, teachings and performance practice of Franz Liszt, and
suggestions for the employment of “cadenza” improvisation in some
nineteenth century piano pieces will be presented.
Clara Schumann’s Improvisations and Her “Mosaics”
of Small Forms
Clara Schumann’s introductory preludes, which she notated in 1895,
document this eminent pianist’s improvisatory practice and her engagement
with music of her time, including the music of Robert Schumann.
These preludes also allow us to envision the sets or “mosaics”
of short pieces by different composers that she performed beginning
in the mid-1830s, as Clara Wieck. She connected these small forms,
which the public was unaccustomed to hearing in concerts, by improvised
transitions, thereby creating an extended work of contrasting
characters, keys, and tempos. Thus a Bach fugue might lead to the
finale of Beethoven’s ‘Appassionata’, followed by character pieces of
Chopin, Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann herself, D.
Scarlatti, or other composers. Clara Schumann’s groupings of pieces
show her concern for large-scale design, her highlighting of relationships
among seemingly disparate pieces, and a sense of historical
progression in the repertory. Thus her selection of pieces, and her
improvised preludes and transitions that connected them constituted
a form of analysis. Although she did not notate transitions for any
specific set of short pieces, Clara Schumann’s preludes to works of
Robert Schumann - «Des Abends» and «Aufschwung» from «Fantasiestücke»,
Op. 12, «Schlummerlied» from «Albumblätter», Op. 124, and
the slow movement of the F-Minor Sonata - provide rich evidence of
the manner in which she constructed improvised introductions. Her
composed introductions, instructional materials by her father, Friedrich
Improvisation as Oration
We analyze several texts that conceptualize improvisation techniques
at the beginning of the nineteenth century by means of rhetorical categories.
The rhetorical approach to music, which predominates in
the Baroque era, introduces techniques of persuasion in the realm of
musical composition. Music thus conceived aims at immediate appraisal
and consent and is addressed to a present - not a future, absent or
hypothetical - community. On the one hand, the improvising pianist
- passing gradually (as Hummel did) from small to gigantic audiences -
tests the rationalized rules of “dispositio” and “elocutio”, of intelligible
form and manifold variation. On the other hand, he offers the image
of inspiration or enthusiasm ‘at work’, the fascinating figure of a genius.
While his ‘fantastic’ production displays at the end of the eighteenth
century something like a ‘super-work’ (revealing the essence
of creating and communicating music), the improvisation is little by
little devaluated and disappears form concert programs. A new work
concept - linked exclusively to precise notation (as Schumann underscores)
and organicism - considers every fantasy as an ‘infra-work’,
seducing only ephemeral or superficial audiences.
(QV 1:7) in the “Versuch einer Anweisung die
Quantz
In his widely disseminated «Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversière
zu spielen» (Berlin, 1752), Johann Joachim Quantz, (1697-1773),
composer of a large body of sonatas and concertos for the flute, devotes
most of his attention to the “tactus” and its subdivision, both with
regard to regular notation and ornamentation, with the latter topic
discussed in four chapters, respectively, und the headings ‘Of the appoggiaturas,
and the little essential graces related to them’ (Chapter
8), ‘Of shakes’ (Chapter 9), ‘Of extempore variations on simple intervals’
(Chapter 13), and ‘Of cadenzas’ (Chapter 15). While the latter
39

chapter pertains merely to the execution of solo concertos, the other
chapters identified here, serve as the basis for the interpretation of
the entire body of Quantz’s instrumental repertories. Since the relatively
sparsely notated slow movements within the sonata da chiesa and
sonata da camera provide ample room for the exploration of a wide
range of diminutions, as illustrated in the «Adagio» in C-Major for flute
and basso continuo (QV 1:7), with the approach of presenting the
flute part in a plain version (with no diminution) and a highly ornate
version perhaps gleaned from the edition of the «Zwölf Methodische
Sonaten» (Hamburg, 1728, 1732) of Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-
1767), a composer whose compositional skills Quantz praises on
several occasions in his «Versuch». Indeed, the ten hitherto extant autograph
scores of Quantz’s sonatas for flute and basso continuo, identified
are almost completely devoid of diminutions, with the exception of
occasional trills and appoggiaturas. Therefore, the sole fully notated
example of small-scale and large-scale diminutions in the «Versuch»
is of prime significance, in that it offers insight into a vital aspect of
contemporary performance practice, one that received little attention
in the actual autographs and subsequent printed editions of Baroque
instrumental repertories.
Realization, the Accompaniment of Recitative,
and Improvised Solo Performance on the Viol
and Cello
One of the most striking characteristics of the earliest cello treatises
is that so many of them give instruction in chordal thoroughbass
realization, especially the conservatory methods designed to train
professional musicians. Anecdotal evidence, often in the form of
complaints, shows that virtuoso viol players were in the habit of improvising
harmonic realizations of continuo lines, and the practices
described in the cello treatises reflect the type of harmonic thinking
and improvisatory traditions that solo viol players had developed over
the previous two centuries - ways of thinking and traditions that the
many eighteenth-century viol players who abandoned the viol for the
cello would almost certainly have adapted to their new instrument. In
most of the treatises, continuo realization is discussed as a means of
accompanying, and written-out realizations of bass lines are frequently
given as examples. However, as the popularity of eighteenth-century
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2010 Convegno
composition treatises founded on thoroughbass practices attests, continuo
realization served as a foundation of both written composition
and improvised solo performance, a practice often referred to today as
“partimento”. The chapter on “fantasieren” in C. P. E. Bach’s «Versuch»
is perhaps the most famous example, but the practice is documented
in Friedrich Niedt’s «Musicalische Handleitung» and other eighteenthcentury
sources connected to the Bach circle. While these sources are
aimed at keyboard players, there is reason to believe that musicians
would have employed similar techniques when improvising on the
viol or cello. Indeed, traces of the practice of continuo realization may
be discerned in several examples of eighteenth-century music for solo
viol and cello, traces which offer valuable clues to the idiomatic nature
of improvised solo practices on these instruments.
‘Free’ Virtuosity and ‘Rehearsed’ Traditions: A Study
of the Flute-Accompanied Cadenza in Donizetti’s
«Lucia di Lammermoor»
In the final act of Donizetti’s ‘mad’ opera «Lucia di Lammermoor», the
deranged Lucia sings a cadenza accompanied by an echoing flute, in
which the instrument takes on the mantel of a ghostly Doppelgänger.
The music provides a potent symbol of the abandon of Lucia and,
by extension, seems to act as a vehicle for the apparently unfettered
dramatic and musical skills of the performer who plays her. But the
subtext here of the equation of psychological abandon with performer
freedom hardly does justice to the complex traditions and constraints
that feed into this illuminating moment. This paper will first attempt to
trace the origins of this cadenza through documentary studies by examining
the composer’s autograph and investigating the performers
who established its earliest staged version. Next, early recordings and
materials indicative of the history of vocal pedagogy will be surveyed
so as to unravel the transmission lines of the various versions of the
cadenza through the different ‘schools’ of singing. It will soon become
clear that the cadenza is almost always a carefully-learned and well-rehearsed
collaboration. These factors enable us to see ornamentation
less as a kind of freedom and more as an indicator of a performer’s
pedigree. Finally, the cadenza and its manifestations will be related to
nineteenth-century views on virtuosity and improvisation in general.
Despite recent feminist readings, Lucia’s “freedom in madness” can be
seen as ironically reversed as her character is embodied in performers
who are tightly constrained by the practices of teacher-imitation and
apprenticeship – victims themselves of one of the most “patriarchal”
contexts within musical society.
Abbellimenti o Fioriture: The Singer’s Creative in Nineteenth
Century Opera
During the first half of the nineteenth century, vocal expression, interpretation
and ornamentation were essential components of most
Italian opera performances. However, due to their oral and improvisational
nature, first hand written evidence of ornamentation practice
is hard to be found. In a few cases - most famously that of the Parisian
soprano Laure Cinti-Damoreau - personal notes have been preserved,
giving essential insight into her creative work. Though we have no
precise knowledge of how much singers of the time actually wrote, it
is clear that such personal notes or didactical material are only rarely
found in libraries today. This paper presents an anonymous, previously
unknown source, written between 1840 and 1850, and containing
examples of ornamentation for over fifty arias and duets by Rossini,
Pacini, Mercadante, Vaccai, Conti, Donizetti, Bellini and Mozart’s Le
nozze di Figaro. The quantity and variety of the examples offer new
insight into Nineteenth century aesthetics, opening perspectives on
singers’ original means of expression and individual ornamentation
propositions. My transcriptions of some of these ornamented arias
will allow us to reconsider the paradigms underlying different ornamentation
styles. In exploring the expressional and vocal freedom
required for their performance, we will observe how the fine structure
of these works is completed and enhanced by the ‘Abbellimenti o
Fioriture’ they presuppose.
The Advantages and Drawbacks of Notation or How
to Face Improvisatory Elements in 19th-Century
Hungarian Popular Music
In 19th-century Hungarian popular dance music called verbunkos
(which was succeeded but at the same time partly protected later by
the csárdás repertoire), improvisation played an important role. The
performers of this corpus, the Gypsy musicians employed the improvisatory
techniques in a very creative way. As the introductory part of
the paper will demonstrate, writings of the period provide us valuable
information about this performance practice. However, it remains difficult,
if not impossible, to retrace certain aspects of this practice in
the musical sources. The noted repertoire is obviously unable to capture
the improvised embellishments of a melody or the richly impro-
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2010 Convegno
vised solo passages (both being products of the musicians individual
creative power) the way they are described in the literary sources.
The second part of the paper will deal with the lack of notation in
this context, but also it will point out that in certain cases (i.e. in the
first noted sources of the early verbunkos) notation can help us to understand
which common models helped the musicians to create and
re-create musical ideas in the instrumental practice. Finally, the paper
will try to shed light on a problematic question of Hungarian music of
this period: was the augmented second really so characteristic in this
repertoire? Here again, the problem will be examined in the context
of improvisation versus notation.
e virtuosismo/improvvisazione: per quest’ultimo aspetto, particolare
attenzione verrà data al Prélude ou Improvisation, opera postuma.
Improvisation into Composition: The First Movement
of the Sonata in F-sharp Minor, Op. 81 by
Johann Nepomuk Hummel
In «Johann Nepomuk Hummel: A Musician’s Life and World Mark»
Kroll presents ample evidence of Hummel’s contemporary reputation
as a first-class improviser. Using this evidence as a starting point,
this paper will explore the assimilation of ‘improvisatory’ techniques
into the Sonata in F-sharp minor, Op. 81 (1819), one of Hummel’s
most imposing and prestigious works. ‘Improvisatory’ is an adjective
often casually applied to this composition. My aim will be to explore
its applicability and to hypothesise that, to a unique degree in Hummel’s
output, the opening movement of Op. 81 simulates an act of
improvisation in which the ‘heat of the moment’ leads to occasional
non-sequiturs, ‘unnecessary’ repetitions and fluctuations in the level
of thematic content. I will consider what this means for Derek Carew’s
recent attempt to uncover a continuous network of motivic derivations
from the opening theme (CAREW, Derek. ‘Hummel’s Op. 81: A
Paradigm for Brahms’s Op. 2?’, in: “Ad Parnassum: A Journal of Eighteenth-
and Nineteenth-Century Instrumental Music”, III/6 (2005), pp.
133-156). Ultimately, this motivic manipulation is only one dimension
of Hummel’s portrayal of the tension between the possibility of loss
of control and direction posed by an improvisatory act and certain
requirements of continuity and structural logic enshrined in the
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2010 Convegno
eighteenth-century stylistic models that Hummel continues to invoke.
In this sense the piece microcosmically depicts Hummel’s contemporary
and modern reputation as a ‘Janus-faced’ figure in the early
Romantic musical scene.
The Role of Improvisation in Liszt’s early Piano
Transcriptions
Liszt (1811-1886), early in his career, used elements of improvisation
which would emphasize his skills both as a virtuoso pianist and inventive
composer. His early piano composition included various Transcriptions
which being written in ‘theme and variations’ form, favoured features
such as structural liberty, imaginative melodic development and
virtuosic manner. Since virtuosity and advanced technical skills were
considered important ingredients for an instrumentalist’s career in
the beginning of the 19th century, improvisation was used by performers
as a demonstration of their practical fluency on their instrument.
Liszt often performed in his public appearances variations on popular
themes, allowing the audience to choose randomly a tune. Therefore
his parallel career as a performer and as a composer enabled him to
exploit several aspects of improvisation. Liszt also reproduced on the
piano various vocal ‘bel canto’ features such as coloratura, which were
directly related to freedom of expression and improvisation. My paper
will demonstrate musical examples of improvisational manner which
characterize several of Liszt’s Transcriptions. The study of particular
scores and the comparison of some works’ alternative versions would
lead to valuable conclusions about Liszt’s compositional approach in
his early years. His first virtuosic works, more than his late style, display
characteristically the relation between composition and improvisation,
the motivic development through loose structural boundaries.
In my presentation I will also highlight the role of improvisation during
the development of the piano as an instrument, while Liszt was
exploring and expanding the new limits of the keyboard in terms of
technique, sonority and musical expression.
Practical Improvisation: the Art of Louis Vierne
The art of improvisation often results in a dazzling concert performance
function, contributing to the effective conduct of liturgical rites.
tury, Louis Vierne, was considered an especially skillful and brilliant
improviser. Yet an examination of the four recorded improvisations he
made for the Odeon label reveals less virtuosity than pragmatism. In
these four pieces, one hears more predictable sounds than the term
‘improvisation’ suggests; the style might even be called pedestrian. A
close study of these improvisations reveals the musical intelligence
behind them: Vierne’s brilliance can be observed not in extraordinary
technical achievements or adventurous harmonies, but in his thoughtful
attention to the needs of worshippers. This paper will elucidate
Vierne’s practical improvisations, contributing to our understanding
of both the composer’s artistry and the concept of improvisation.

The Discovery of
Paganini’s Magic Bow
Joseph Gold*
«The bow is not important. It is the violinist who is important».
Paganini said that. He did!
This was great publicity for Paganini, the violinist, but very bad
publicity for bowmakers. What will happen to the price of bows
if violinists believe Paganini?
Seriously, dear reader, we are here to examine the genius of
Paganini, and learn what bows he used in his meteoric career.
I take you back in history, to a time when bows really were
‘unimportant’. We return to the days before Tourte.
Paganini was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1782. The modern ‘Tourte’
bow was unknown in Italy — it had just been invented. Paganini
was trained in the 18th century style of violin playing. But his
ideas were always modern. In his early career, Paganini used
the old style bow. Later he wrote that the other violinists laughed
at his long bow and thick strings. This is a very important
sentence - his long bow and thick strings!
From this sentence, we can conclude that those laughing violinists
used the older, shorter stick. You see, Paganini was always
far ahead of his colleagues. We know from both Vuillaume and
the great Norwegian violinist Ole Bull, that Paganini used a
Post-Tartini style bow. I assume that the length of this bow was
approximately ‘normal’, because they commented on the style
of the stick but not the length.
In the 1820’s, Paganini was actually selling bows of this type.
Here is the scenario: I quote from de Courcy’s great 2 volume
opus on Paganini: «While superintending the repair of Germi’s
instruments in Mantegazza’s workshop, he ordered a quantity
of bows. These were made to his specifications, and Germi was
to sell the bows in Genoa».
Here is Paganini’s letter to Germi, dated January 7, 1824. «The
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
bows should be worth two louis a piece, owing to the precision
of workmanship. They are — I repeat — excellent for everybody.
As for myself, however, I prefer more hairs with maximum
elasticity, which is impossible to attain without altering the design
of the stick. This would be hard to do without experimenting
beforehand and my being present at the tests. But for the
moment what difference does it make if they don’t happen to
suit me? They do beautifully for anyone who wants to use them
— and they suit you, don’t they?»
The Mantagazza mentioned appears to be Carlo. He was the
luthier to Count Cozio de Salabue.
For a description of Paganini’s bow, we turn to the great Norwegian
violinist Ole Bull. The young violinist told of a chance meeting
with Paganini on a street in Paris. Nicolo invited the young
virtuoso to come along with him. Bull was delighted when the
great man talked to him like an old and trusted friend.
Ole Bull described Paganini’s bow as being «made after the old
Italian style of a somewhat later shape than that of Tartini’s».
When the hair was tightened to the proper tension, the stick
was nearly straight. Vuillaume, when he saw this bow, laughed
and inquired who could play with such a thing. When Paganini
brought it to him to be repaired (he had broken the upper
end), Vuillaume offered to make him another. He was much
displeased with the idea and declined the gift in a very decide
manner. He said that he could never think of using any other.
Both Ole Bull and Vuillaume agree on all these facts.
This style bow can be seen in the drawing which appears in Carl
Guhr’s incomparable book «Paganini’s Art of Violin Playing».
It is curious to note that this same drawing appears in other
books — but the head of the bow is different. Nevertheless, the
type of bow is similar to the early style of Joseph René Lafleur.
The heads are very high and slender, and very elegant. Vatelot
uses the word ‘Pike’ to describe this shape.
I believe Paganini retained this bow throughout his career, and
had it in the same case with his Guarneri violin and his favorite
bow.
At this time, I want to mention a few famous bowmakers from
Paganini’s visits to Paris. We know that Paganini had contact
with Lupot. I offer as evidence the famous letter addressed to
Lupot. There is no evidence that Paganini actually used a Lu-
65
66
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
pot, however.
I am also positive that Paganini met Tourte.
When violinists speak of bows, the name François Tourte is
always spoken with reverence. Did Paganini have any contact
with this great bow maker? Bear in mind that Paganini conquered
Paris with his violin and bow in early 1831. Tourte died in
April 1835. This would allow a full four years for some kind of
contact. Knowing Paganini as we do, he had a very inventive
mind; he was curious far beyond the norm. But this is a subject
for a later conference.
In my youth, I was told that Paganini used a bow by Sirjean.
This bowmaker is very obscure — no one knows anything
about him.
On the other hand, we have solid evidence of a working relationship
between Paganini and J. B. Vuillaume. While Paganini
was in Paris, Vuillaume marketed his newest invention. It was
the ‘revolutionary’ steel bow. In a letter to Edouard Fetis (the
noted author and musicologist), Paganini praises the new bow.
This letter is dated September 26th, 1834.
«I ask you to make known my opinion of the steel bows invented
by M. Vuillaume, which have already been mentioned
in your journal. I have to state in the interest of the musical
art that these bows are infinitely preferable and far superior to
the wooden ones; they unite great firmness with an equality of
resistance throughout their length such as I have not yet found
in other bows, and possess sufficient flexibility to achieve easily
all shades of tone.» Sounds like a pretty good bow, doesn’t it!
At first, the views expressed in this letter seem to contradict his
previous statements. However, I believe Paganini is advocating
the steel bows for the general public and not for his own use.
When viewed in this light, Paganini does not contradict himself
at all. Furthermore, I categorically reject the notion that Paganini’s
endorsement was done for his personal or financial gain.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, to the moment which was, to
me, like the discovery of King Tut’s tomb. You all know the
great and famous violin of Paganini, ‘Il Cannone’. But the magic
wand of Paganini — his bow — was completely unknown. It
was always there in Genoa not far from ‘Il Cannone’. But it was
always in a secret place; a secret withheld from the world.
I was taken to a special room in the palace. There I waited in
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
great excitement. The bow finally arrived. It was wrapped in
‘butcher paper’. And now, I will tell you about Paganini’s favorite
bow.
Holding it is a metaphysical experience, to say the least. Sadly,
the bow is broken into many pieces. The identification tag states
that it is in eight pieces. In a fine hand, Achilles Paganini
(the only child of Nicolo Paganini) writes on the identification
tag, «This is the bow which my father used throughout his artistic
career». The fact is, Paganini used other bows prior to the
memory of Achilles (1825-1895). Early on, Paganini used the
pre-Tourte type bow, as we have seen.
I have already told you what the bow is not. It is not a Tartinitype
bow, nor a Tourte, nor a Lupot, nor a Sirjean. I do believe
that it is a Jacob Eury.
Before describing this fabulous work of art, it will be interesting
to discover how Paganini acquired his favorite bow.
The facts surrounding the Eury bow are even more cloudy than
how Paganini acquired his Guarneri violin. Perhaps he became
acquainted with the French school of bow-making during
his formative period in Lucca, Italy (1801-1805). It was here,
as court violinist to Princess Elise Bonaparte Baciocchi (sister
of Napoleon Bonaparte) that he had his first great concert successes.
The French connection is quite clear. Most likely, though,
he continued to use his ‘old style’ bow for a while longer.
Another possibility is through his friendly competition with the
French virtuoso Charles Lafont in the year 1816. The bow dates
from this period. Thus, this scenario is certainly a possibility.
Was it a gift from one great violinist to another? Perhaps. If not,
it was most certainly from an admirer.
A beautiful portrait of Paganini (1831) by the English artist Samuel
Lover clearly pictures the ‘new’ bow. There is no doubt
that the button and frog are the same as the bow in Palazzo
Rosso. February 24, 1831 marks the date of Paganini’s arrival
in Paris, the bow-making capital of the world. After careful examination
of the bow, I believe that Paganini acquired the bow
earlier than 1831. The reason is that the frogs of both bows
in Palazzo Rosso are not original. They seem to be made by
the same bow maker, and are interchangeable. The frog on
the Eury bow has a broader band of hair in accordance with
Paganini’s preference. Perhaps only the bone adjuster button
67
68
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
on the other bow is original, but belongs to the Eury. Alberto
Giordano, a present-day violin maker of Genoa, Italy, thinks the
frogs are of Italian origin.
Another bit of evidence can be observed in the portrait displayed
in the Naples Conservatory. Albeit undated, the head of
the bow stands out clearly. Unfortunately, the pattern is rather
generic. It is, however, a modern type bow, and not the post-
Tartini type.
The Eury bow itself was a magnificent creation. It is bold in
concept and boasts a full head. The chamfers are also bold. As
is the usual case with Eury, the stick is octagonal. The octagon
is executed in the manner of Tourte. It is truly virtuoso octagon,
as flat as a table top. The bow has excessive wear. Some of
this was the result of the profuse sweating of Paganini (he wore
woolen underwear to absorb the sweat). The other wear, we
can say ‘abuse’, came from enthusiastic and constant use. This
is absolute evidence that this was Paganini’s favorite bow.
The stick is broken in two places. One was repaired by Vuillaume.
The other is unrepaired at the time of this writing. The
head is also a disaster area, with two more breaks. Originally,
the head had the Eury trademark of a flat ridge going down the
nose all the way to the tip of the bow. Through constant use,
this flat ridge, which is really a continuation of the upper octagon,
has become obliterated. The head of Paganini’s Eury bow
resembles bow no. 2 in L’Archet by Millant and Raffin.
Constant use has left indelible fingerprints where Paganini gripped
the bow. You can actually see the indentations where the
fingers of Paganini’s right hand were placed. He had very acidic
perspiration which actually destroyed the wood. Evidence
shown in Lover’s portrait, and the butt end of the stick prove
that Paganini played without wrapping on the stick. Speaking
of the butt end of the stick, it too was broken and repaired
with a metal ring. The slot box has been lengthened, but the
characteristically large Eury nipple remains.
The unlined ebony frog is a unique design. Large and rustic
workmanship include a mother-of-pearl diamond on either
side. The mother-of-pearl slide is also one of a kind. Overall,
the impression of the frog is that of a ‘home made’ job.
Undoubtedly, the Eury was in one piece when Paganini died
in 1840. The ensuing years have now been kind to it. Broken
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
in transit to Genoa in 1851 perhaps, sadly separated from ‘Il
Cannone’. Yet, it remains, like the Colosseum in Rome — a magnificent
ruin.
Paganini’s Heritage in
the Piano Music
Veronica Gaspar*
Chronologically, Paganini is more Beethoven’s generation
than the great Romantic composers’ where, paradoxically, the
current perception is situating him. Indeed, his relatively late
recognition at European level and the admiration of important
personalities of the 19th century brought Paganini closer to the
epoch he exerted a decisive influence on. A portrayal of Balzac,
in his novel Le cousin Pons (1847): «The melancholy and the
Raphaelite perfection of Chopin together with the energy and
Dantesque grandeur de Liszt comes near to Paganini’s brightness»
is illustrative for the general fascination Paganini exerted
in the epoch.
The romantic composers received in different ways Paganini’s
influence, but all of them expressed their admiration and confessed
about their endeavour to imitate the Diabolus in musica.
Not just the artist but also the ‘character’ Paganini was perceived
as the symbol of a profound transformation affecting the
music and its ways of communication. He brought in the centre
of the musical life the soloist and his innovations added an
important weight to the revolutionary transformations which
were later carried out by the great Romantic composers — Liszt,
Schumann, Brahms — who were basically pianists.
It is said that the Romantism created the independent soloist.
Such allegation is not quite accurate at least if we consider the
singers. Still, therein the social role of the instrumental performer
emerged from the traditional ancillary or anonymous
status described by Guido d’Arezzo as «(the performers) like
animals, are reproducing an activity without being aware of
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
it». Since the 19th century the role of the instrumental soloist,
following Paganini’s wake, got a special weight and became autonomous
from a particular work created in a particular time.
The concert stages began from the early 1800s to take in the
performances of works composed by more composers. The
musical performance becomes most often a soloist’s choice
and the act of communication begins to prevail on the content
to be transmitted. A genre not fortuitously developed in this
time and decisively influenced by Paganini’s Caprices is the Romantic
Etude. This is no more a means for private improving,
but an independent work highlighting an important compound
of the musical show: the virtuosity.
Meanwhile, Paganini catalysed the opening of the audience to
the dark side of the human esprit. Indeed the musical discourse
which was related to the Apollinic objectivity of a transcendental
message or to the Bacchic entertainment added also Saturn
in the mythological imaginary of an epoch that created the gothic
novel, the works of Goya or Gerard de Nerval, Mephisto
and many secret societies centred on the dark enigmas of the
Middle Age. When the inexplicable skills of Paganini broke out,
they unleashed the unconscious need for magic of a society
not yet accustomed to the too recent positivist trend of the
modernity. Paganini himself indulged and used for his career
those tendencies, reviving medieval phantasms of the social
imaginary in order to connect unusual skills with magic.
Therefore the authority of Paganini on the Romantic composers
acted on several levels, starting from the direct influence
of his musical innovations, but also by the increasing role of the
virtuosity and by a particular spirit, reiterated in many works
in the 19th and 20th centuries. Because of the relationship of
the most important composers of the 19th century with the
piano, we could presume that the incontestable influence of
Paganini played a decisive role also in the development of this
instrument. His challenging impact on the piano music implies
as well the broadening of the instrumental limits by the newinvented
‘performer star’.
The first composer to evoke Paganini in a piano work seems
to be Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837). He was one of
the first pianists to follow the trend to hold recitals presenting
(also) works of other composers. Because living in an epoch
dominated by Beethoven and later by the reformist Roman-
ticists, Hummel’s instrumental and creative skills are rather
shadowed. In his Fantasia in C major – Souvenirs de Paganini
we recognize some of the Caprices, several of which better exploited
by other composers in the following years. The work,
not published during the composer’s life, doesn’t surpass the
average transcription of exercises present in the Baroque. In
this Fantasia there are just some Paganini’s themes with a conventional
accompaniment, under the virtuosity requirements
for the piano literature of the time, including Hummel’s own
other works. This work was part of an already rising trend to
praise Paganini, marking the increasing influence of the great
violinist among the musicians in the whole Europe.
The influence of Paganini on Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was
more subtle. Generally, Chopin despised virtuosity as an aim
and was rather sarcastic to the average of his contemporary;
nevertheless, for Paganini he had only superlatives. For Chopin,
«Paganini is the embodied perfection» as he incidentally
wrote in a letter actually meant to express his admiration for
another musician (the pianist Friedrich Kalkbrenner). It seems
that Chopin heard Paganini in 1829 in a series of 10 concertos
in Warsaw. Chopin took not a significant direct influence from
Paganini’s themes. We found just a little piece from his early
age inspired by The Carnival of Venice, entitled Souvenir de
Paganini for Solo Piano (1829). Chopin’s famous Andante Spianato
and Grande Polonaise Op. 22 (1830-34) was also inspired
by Paganini’s Cantabile Spianato e Poloneza brillante played in
Leipzig and Warsaw in 1829. But what inspired Chopin’s rhetoric
in a much more significant way was the original insertion
of vocal fioriture in the instrumental music, interrupting the
metric pulse as a subjective comment. The ornamental ‘comment’
as a technical proceeding was already used in the past:
in the Agréments in Baroque works, or even in the Classical
repertoire beside the virtuosity Cadences (e.g. the second Theme
of the first movement in Beethoven’s Sonata for Piano Op.
31/3 which is repeated with ornaments, producing a temporal
dilatation). But its incidence, the variety and embodiment
in the work’s structure of the proceeding is a typical mark of
the romantic melody and a token of a decisive influence of the
King of Violin on the King of Piano.
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
In 1824-1825 Robert Schumann (1810-1856) was still oscillating
between Music and Poetry (especially because of his friendship
with Jean-Paul). In 1828 «amidst the lugubrious walls of Leipzig»
he wrote to his mother: «My major studies will be Philosophy
and History». But the impact of young Schumann with Paganini
during a concert tour in Germany in 1829 determined him to
choose music as main occupation. Schumann made two cycles
of Studies (Op. 3, 1832 and Op. 10, 1835) directly inspired by
the Caprices for violin solo, some of them used by Hummel
too. The virtuoso trend inspired by Paganini, also stimulated by
the talent of his beloved Clara Wieck, led Schumann toward the
perfection of the piano technique. He tried several devices to
improve his own technical skills (like the Chiroplast of Johann
Bernhard Logier) until he definitively injured his hand. In the
Carnival Op. 9 (1834) Schumann had a different approach: in
the episode named ‘Paganini’ he is not quoting a manner but
painting a personality; the rough energy and the amazing resonance-effects
are giving us an idea of Paganini’s performance.
Franz Liszt (1811-1886) made the best rendering of Paganini’s
spirituality and probably gave the most audacious reply to the
broadening of the limits of the instrument initiated by the
violinist. He felt the contact with Paganini as a challenge and
assiduously tried to reach his idol. «My God, what a man, what
a violin, what an artist! […]». In 1832 after hearing Paganini,
Liszt confessed in a letter to Pierre Wolff: «I practice exercises
up to 4-5 hours each day: 8th, 3rd, 6th, tremolos, cadences
etc. […] If I will not become mad, you’ll find a real artist in
me!» Liszt was preoccupied to prove the superiority and the
richness of the piano on the violin. Liszt seemingly made the
essential revolution in the piano playing and in the improving
of the instrument. Like Chopin, he largely used the art of improvising
ornaments in a Cantabile, but Paganini stirred mainly
his preoccupation for virtuosity. The piano gets the benefice of
the technical features as scales in 8ves, leaps, chromatic scales
etc. giving them rhetoric and emotional significance. In 1838
he wrote Etudes d’exécution transcendantale d’après Paganini
and, after trying several variants, he published in 1851 the final
version Grandes Etudes de Paganini. Here appeared one of the
first transcriptions of the famous Caprice 24, probably the most
91
92
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
often employed theme in the History of Music.
Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) published in 1863 two series
of Variations on the 24 Paganini Caprices, creating 28 hypostases
of psychological nuances and technical diversity. Clara
Schumann used to call them ‘Hexen-Variationen’ (Diabolic
Variations). Still, this work had nothing diabolic and nothing
recalling the consecrated image of Paganini; just one of the
variations, no. 4 in the second volume is evoking Paganini’s
nationality quoting a well-known Canzonetta. Brahms is brilliantly
representing the stream of the technical imitation to be
followed since. He puts further the limits of the pianistic skills,
beside a serious contribution to the variation technique, challenging
many composers in the next decades.
In the 20th century, the evolution of the music led to the fading
of the direct, emotional communication, recovering the
line of ‘Absolute Music’ interrupted by the Romantic episode.
The ‘Paganini character’ disappeared under a huge amount of
dark aesthetics; meanwhile the instrumental skills became attributes
of the musical education devoid of any link with the
magic. Nevertheless Paganini was still present in the musical
creation. His themes, especially the Caprice no. 24 are continuing
to provoke countless variations no matter the composers’
style, country or instrumental specialization. An exhaustive list
is almost impossible to be completed, when Paganini’s themes
are meant for piano, chamber music, jazz-band, percussion,
flute, even ukulele…
The average motivation for the 20th-century composers seems
to be the technical challenge imposed by a very often employed
theme, fortuitously composed by Paganini. The Norwegian
composer, Trygve Madsen, eloquently synthesizes this tendency:
«Is it possible to do something new with this theme? Or
does everything have to be ‘in the shadow of Brahms’?» Sometimes,
a particular conjuncture offered a different impulse
for one more transcription. For instance, Witold Lutosławski
(1913-1994) needed to increase his two-piano repertoire for
the duo formation he was playing in during the World War II.
He succeeded to create one of the most successful variant of
the eternal Caprice 24. Three decades later he transformed
this work in a Concerto for Piano and orchestra (1971). The
Festival Paganiniano di Carro 2009 Saggi
approach of Stanisław Skrowaczewski (b. 1923) makes an exception:
he is one of the few to evoke the esprit of Paganini,
his strange fury, the demonism, thus recalling to some extent
Schumann’s Paganini from the Carnival Op. 10. A noticeable
work is Luigi Dallapiccola’s (1904-1975): Sonatina canonica in
(1946). It is one of the few not to use the omnipresent
Caprice 24.
One can wonder about what has so special this theme and why
did it gather the most numerous variants? The general contour
is outlining one of the plainest motives, widely used in the Romanian
traditional folklore until well-known classical works as
Beethoven’s Eroica Variations ( Variations and Fugue Op. 35 for
piano solo, 1802 and Final movement of the third Symphony,
1803). A lot of composers from different countries (Poland,
United Kingdom, Portugal, Italy, USA, Norway, Turkey etc.)
exerted their skills processing this theme. It can be found in
several styles, from Post-Romanticism until the most advanced
avant-garde, nothing to say about Jazz-like productions.
Sergey Rachmaninoff ’s (1873-1943) Variations on the 24th Caprice,
namely The Rhapsody for Piano and orchestra on a Theme
of Paganini (1934) is probably the most complex homage to
Paganini in the last century. The diversity of means and timbres
could, finally, reach Paganini’s mastery. The main motive takes
several appearances. One of the metamorphoses (mirror
inversion) gives birth to one of the most uplifting love songs.
Another is Dies Irae drawing near the whole Gothic imaginary
of the Romantism, with its witches’ sabbatical dances, demons’
laughter, etc. picturing Paganini’s stamp in the 19th-century
imaginary. «Ancient stories appear from the Middle Age, with
witches and spirits, rising rumours about the selling out of his
soul to the Devil» wrote Liszt in 1840 depicting Paganini’s image
in the 19th century. Almost a century later, Rachmaninoff
succeeded to create a corresponding musical image, in the
same time a continuation of the technical inventiveness of Paganini
and a touching evocation of his esprit.
Paganini’s heritage is occupying a large place, from the main
challenging impact on pianists (which is continuing even today)
till the creation of a special rhetoric, beside concrete in-
93

novations in the musical genres and forms. He led the broadening
of the instrumental limits as well for violin as for piano. He
harmonized the vocal with the instrumental music and created
the novel God of our laic world: the performer-star. Paganini,
gathering the occult need for the nocturnal side of the human
imaginary and followed by the most important composers-pianists,
initiated a peculiar trend of spiritual enrichment reconciling
for a short while the performers’ skills with the musical
creation.
The Romantism, epoch of Faustus and Mephisto was a turbulent
epoch, which renewed the art expression. The art works
recovered euphemized forms of archaic myths. Apollo, symbol
and ideal for art creation, was parting his place in the Arts Pantheon
with Bacchus, Saturn and, recently with Mercury, the
God of merchandise. In the short period when the Artist was
the intermediary between human and divine, substituting the
traditional role of the music itself, Paganini and his pianists-followers
gathered the need of idols in a laic and unstable society.
In the Panegyric wrote by Liszt in 1840, he concluded: «Paganini’s
unique geniality frightens even his followers. He is a Master
in the Empire of Arts on a solitary summit. The enchantment
exerted on the audience was so powerful that one could not
imagine a natural explanation for such a genius […]».
