IL ROGOLONE 3This walk leads through the Park Val Sanagra an arearich in flora, fauna and antique rural settlements. Inthe middle of a clearing in the woods stands “IlRogolone” an enormous oak tree measuring 25 m inheight and 8 m in circumference.- starting point: Menaggio 200 m or the hamletCodogna reachable by car (ideal for children)- itinerary: Menaggio - Loveno - Piamuro -Mulino della Valle - Codogna - il Rogolone - Velzo-Codogna - Mulino Vecchia Chioderia - Mulinodella Valle - Piamuro - Menaggio- total walking time: 4.30 hrs (from Codogna 1:30min).- ascent: 279 m- trail signs: from Piamuro to Mulino della Vallemetal signs Parco Val Sanagra trail n° 4 fromCodogna to Rogolone some wooden signs indicatingRogoloneRoute: From Piazza Garibaldi you pick up ViaCalvi. At the end of it you cross the main road andyou turn into Via Caronti, along the left side of theParish church St. Stefano. At the end of the streetturn right and after 30 m turn left into ViaCastellino da Castello. This cobble stone alleyleads to the upper part of the town where once thecastle stood. It was destroyed in 1523 by theSignore delle Leghe Grigie. Above the ruins of theancient castle you find the church S. Carlo (1614)The street then leads down to a road (Via N.Sauro) which you follow to the right. Go up thesteps on the right side of Hotel Loveno in order tocut off a bend. Back on the road follow it (to theleft) another 30 m and at the next bend, pick up thecontinuation of Via N. Sauro to the left.You are now in the hamlet Loveno with its splendidvillas. To begin with, on the left at the beginning ofthe street, there is Villa Bel Faggio and after 200 myou pass Villa Garovaglio Ricci now owned by theGerman Federal Republic which hosts theAssociation “Villa Vigoni Centro Italo – Tedesco”.Villa Mylius Vigoni lies just behind VillaGarovaglio. The park can be visited on reservationon Thursday afternoon tel. 0344 361232. You passthe church San Lorenzo with its baroque facade andthe sport centre and then arrive at “Piamuro” a bigpasture (40 min. from Menaggio). From Piamurofollow the cart track straight on (following the trailsign n°4) in the direction of “Mulino della Valle”and after about 1 km till you reach the little Chapeldell’Artus.The track from here leads down to the river Sanagraat Mulino della Valle. You cross the bridge Nogaraand follow the mule track as it leads up to Codogna.You reach Piazza Camozzi where you cross theroad and pick up the track below the walls on theleft side of the 17th century Villa Camozzi (signRogolone). It is the seat of the town hall ofGrandola and of the Ethnographical andNaturalistic Museum Val Sanagra open every lastSunday of the month and from May till the end ofSeptembre every second and last tel. 0344 32115.From the even track you have a beautiful view ofthe Val Menaggio with Monte Crocione and MonteGalbiga. The trail then leads into the woods andcrosses several streams. A steep stretch leads up tothe clearing where the big oak tree “il Rogolone”stands. Pick up the trail up on the right side of theclearing. After a brief stretch uphill, it leads on toanother trail which you follow to the right in thedirection of Velzo (sign). After having walked forabout 30 minutes, the trail becomes a cart track andarrives at the hamlet Velzo. You cross the road (Viadelle Alpi) which leads up to Naggio, and you takethe track right in front of you which leads to the centerof the hamlet. At the house where the streetsplits, pick up Via Gottro to the right. Keep rightand you come to a little piazza with a small chapelwhere you pick up Via Leopardi on the left. Past awashhouse you cross the road and pick up the muletrack leading along the side of the beautiful parishchurch S. Siro. You again reach villa Camozzi (nowon the opposite side), cross the road near the sportcenter and pick up via Mulino. You follow the roaddown to the river Sanagra following the indicationsfor “agriturismo La Vecchia Chioderia”, wherethere is a trout farm with a typical inn, an ideal spotto try the local dishes. Cross the bridge and followthe track along the river to the right which againleads to the Mulino della Valle. From here back toMenaggio the same way you came.
