Humanactivity is inevitably tied up with multiple physical and circumstantialdimensions that defy control but that must be takeninto account for responsible decision-making.It is the complete set of short and long term dimensionsand ramifications of any human activity that are therefore recognizedto be morally relevant and labeled pre-moral. This labeldoes not signify a removal from the realm of moral assessmentbut, quite the contrary, the designation of all the aspects ofhuman activity, including those circumstances referred to asconsequences, as important and potentially crucial. In my estimation,proportionate thinking is the only approach to contemporarymoral theology that presents an integrated and adequateunderstanding of the moral event.JOSEPH A.
