This reform isnot only an interesting attempt to change the Turkish language deliberatelyand methodically; it is also an integral part of an important manifestationof the social, political and cultural transformation which has takenplace in Turkey. The linguistic changes can only be understood in correlationwith the simultaneous development of Turkish society. Owing tothis dual aspect, the Turkish language reform may be of interest not onlyto the Turkologists, but also to the historians and sociologists. The Turkishlanguage reform, initiated by the first president of the Republic –Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, has been one of the important steps directed towardsthe formation of the new Turkish nation and its transformation tothe new cultural consciousness.512
