MERAB NACHKEBIATHE POPULATION NUMBER OF ABKHAZIAAND THE PRESENT STATUSOF THE ABKHAZIAN LANGUAGEThe article is devoted to the analysis of the problems concerningthe language identity of the post-war population of Abkhazia, the northwestpart of Georgia occupied by Russia. There are investigated the languagespecifities of the population living there at present and which arequite different from those in other parts of Georgia due to the influenceof the peculiar educational system (the Russian Federation model). Thearticle touches upon the type and the constituent parts of the languagecontacts, the principles regulating the language standards, the media language,the onomastic variety, the status of the Abkhazian language, etc.The study of the factual material has shown that the idealized “independence”has not brought the feeling of national satisfaction and full value.Russia watches over every action of the Abkhazians and acutely reacts toall the manifestations of independent free thought which is visible, despitethe caution in the interviews given at various times and by differentpersons, in the articles and the fragments of the books.50
