The authorsubstantiates this statement by the following arguments: 1) the spread ofIslam among the Adyghe-Circassians as early as in the 15th century; 3) thespread of Islam and strengthening of its positions primarily in the mountainousvillages of Abkhazia, rather than its coastal area; 4) the spread of Islamto a greater extent among the persons having come down to Abkhaziafrom the highlands, as compared with the local population.28. <strong>soxumis</strong> <strong>saxelmwifo</strong> <strong>universiteti</strong>s Sromebi433
